  • Gray-colored materials were synthesized from ball-milled ZnO powders under a thermal annealing at $1380^{\circ}C$ with an argon carrier gas for 3 hours. The synthesized materials were identified to be wurtzitic hexagonal structured ZnO nanowires by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The ZnO nanowires have the long cylinder-like shape of which cross-section is a circle, and these nanowires are in the range 15~40nm width and 10~70 $\mu m$ length, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that these nanowires are single-crystalline and grow along [110] direction. The optical properties of the ZnO nanowires were investigated with photoluminescence. The analytic results revealed that ZnO nanowires have the singly ionized oxygen vacancies in the surface lattices, as they emit strong green light in room temperature PL. In addition, the growth mechanism of the ZnO nanowires can be described by the vapor-solid procedures.

  • Aqueous solutions of chlorobenzene and chlorinated phenols were exposed to 200kHz ultrasound with a power of $6.0W/\textrm{cm}^2$ per unit volume on sonochemical reactor under ambient temperature and pressure conditions. The concentration of chlorobenzene and chlorinated phenols decreased with ultrasound, indicating first-order kinetics. Degradation rate constants are calculated from the slope of plots. The order of the rate constants is as follows : 2-chlorphenol(2-CP)$\leq$ 4-chlorophenol(4-CP)<3-chlorophenol(3-CP)$5.63~9.96({\times}10^{-2})min^{-1}$ under argon. The degradation was suppressed by the addition of t-BuOH and the suppressed yield was agreed with their reactivity for hydroxy radical. The main products of these systems were formic acid, acetic acid, small amount of methane and inorganic carbon forms as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide in sonolysis of chlorinated phenols, and also these results agreed with change of TOC.

  • Wetting properties between silver-copper-titanium braze alloys with different titanium contents up to 2.8 mass% and hexagonal boron nitride ceramics were investigated using sessile drop method at 1123K in Argon. The final contact angle is less than $30^{\circ}$ when the Ti content was over 0.41 mass%. Meanwhile, the contact angle curves show different behavior. In case of using braze alloy containing 2.8 mass% of titanium, the initial contact angle is acute angle just after the melting of braze. In case of brazes containing titanium less than 2.26 mass%, the contact angle is larger than $90^{\circ}$ at the beginning and slowly decreases to acute angle. The reaction layer of titanium nitride is observed at the interface. In addition, the reaction of Ti in the braze and N in the bulk h-BN seemed to show diffusion limited spreading.

  • Although plasma is an efficient means of microbial sterilization, mechanism of plasma effect on microorganisms still needs to be clarified. In addition, a limited number of studies are available on eukaryotic microorganisms such as yeast and fungi in relation to plasma application. Thus, we investigated cellular and molecular aspects of plasma effects on a filamentous fungus, Neurospora crassa by making use of argon plasma jet at atmospheric pressure. The viability and cell morphology of N. crassa spores exposed to plasma were both significantly reduced depending on the exposure time when treated in water. The intracellular genomic DNA content was dramatically reduced in fungal tissues after a plasma treatment and the transcription factor tah-3 was found to be required for fungal tolerance to a harsh plasma environment.

  • Organoanisyltitanium compounds which have chlorine or isopropoxy group as ligand were synthesized and purely isolated. These new compounds were proved to be stable at $0^{\circ}C$ under argon atmosphere for some weeks. They react readily at low temperature with carbonyl compound, especially aldehyde and ketone, to coresponding alcohols. In competition reaction of aldehyde/ketone pair these organotitanium species showed complete aldehyde selectivity.

  • High heat-resistant Al-Fe-V-Si and Al-Fe-V-Si-X rapidly solidified powder metallurgy (RS P/M) alloys have been developed under well-controlled high purity argon gas atmosphere. The $Al_{90.49}Fe_{6.45}V_{0.68}Si_{2.38}$ (at. %) RS P/M alloy exhibited high elevated-temperature strength exceeding 300 MPa and good ductility with elongation of 6 % at 573 K. Reduction of $H_2O$ partical pressure in P/M processing atmosphere led to improvement in mechanical properties of the powder-consolidated alloys under elevated-temperature service conditions. Ti addition to the Al-Fe-V-Si conduced to enhancement of the strength at room temperature. The tensile yeild strength and ultimate strenght were 545 MPa and 722 MPa, respectively.

  • Recently in the welding field, the establishment of unmanned and automated systems are rapidly developing. Accurate interpretation of the welding phenomenon is applied a number of monitoring systems. In this paper, butt welding (6t) type I using Plasma-MIG welding was carried out. And we evaluated characteristics of the Al-5083 aluminium alloy in Plasma-MIG hybrid welding. Process variables including the plasma current, MIG voltage, wire feeding rate and the welding speed were used. Butt welding was conducted 1 pass. Argon gas was used as the protective gas that results from the experiment were able to achieve full penetration. In addition to monitoring the welding process occurring during MIG welding current, welding votage and Plasma current, voltage were collected in real time, the photodiode and CCD cameras observing the phenomenon that the welding is in progress were measured using a quantity of light.

  • The smallest ketenimine and hydrogen cyanide N-methylide ($CH_2CNH$ and $CH_2NCH$) are provided from the argon/acetonitrile matrix samples exposed to radiation from laser ablation of transition-metals. New infrared bands are observed in addition to better determination of the vibrational characteristics for the previously reported bands, and the $^{13}C$ substituted isotopomers ($^{13}{CH_2}^{13}CNH$ and $^{13}CH_2N^{13}CH$) are also generated. Density functional frequency calculations and the D and $^{13}C$ isotopic shifts substantiate the vibrational assignments. $CH_2CNH$ is probably produced through single-step conversion of $CH_3CN$, whereas $CH_2NCH$ through two-step conversion via 2H-azirine. Inter-conversions between these two products evidently do not occur during photolysis and annealing.

  • This study was conducted to synthesize the diamond like carbon films by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). The effects of gas composition on growth and mechanical properties of the films were investigated. A little amount of hydrogen or oxygen were added to base gas mixture of methane and argon. Methane dissociation and diamond like carbon nucleation were enhanced by installing negatively bias grid near substrate. The deposited films were indentified as hard diamond like carbon films by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The surface and fractured cross section of the films which were observed by scanning electron microscopy showed that film growth is very slow as about 0.3$\mu\textrm{m}$/hour, and relatively uniform with hydrogen addition. Vickers hardness of tungsten carbide (WC) cutting tool increased from about 1000 to 1600~1800 by deposition of DLC film, that of commercial TiN coated tool was about 1270. In cutting test of aluminum 6061 alloy, DLC coated cutting tool showed 1/3 or lower crater and flank wear than TiN coated or non-coated WC cutting tools.

  • The present study investigates the behavior of the sintering and hardness of stainless steel samples reinforced with NbC and TaC. Matrixes of pure stainless steel were compacted with addition of up to 3% wt NbC or TaC in a cylindrical die of steel $(\phi\;=\;5,0\;mm)$ at 700 MPa and sintered in an electrical resistance furnace under argon atmosphere. The sintered samples were characterized by density and hardness measurement, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The preliminary results show that the size and distribution of carbides influence in the sintering and hardness of the sintered samples.
