  • Facial blushing is a personally disabling condition, which can result in emotional disturbance and be an impediment to social life. Although numerous treatment options exist, including beta blocker, cognitive behavioral therapy and sympathetic neurolysis, no generally accepted form of treatment has been established. Herein, we report two cases of successful reduction of facial blushing following the administration of beta blocker and a minor tranquillizing antianxiety drug.

  • Objective : This study was performed to investigate the prescriptions and herbs about Keongke(驚悸), Cheongchung and fear affection(恐證) related to the anxiety disorder Method : 9 main texts in oriental medicine were selected and investigated for this study. And then the results of research were analyzed. Result : 87 prescriptions and 123 herbs were described in 9 books. Especially Chusaanshinhwan(朱砂安神丸), Ginseng Radix(人蔘), Poria(茯神), and Angelicae Gigantis Radix(當歸) were mainly used. • Paroxetine is a potent and selective serotoin re-uptake inhibitor. It is well known as an effective and safe antidepressant and increasingly used for neurotic or non-psychotic depression with anxiety symptoms. The present study assessed antidepressant and antianxiety efficacy and tolerability of paroxetine against placebo in child-adolescent and adult depressive neurosis patients. 232 subjects aged 8-55 years and meeting DSM-III-R criteria for depressive neurosis or dysthymia were divided into 8 subgroups according to their sex and age(8-11 yeard old, 12-17 years old, 18-35 years old and 36-55 years old subgroup in each male and female group). In each subgroup, the randomly assigned half of the patients were treated with paroxetine(10-30mg/day) and the others with placebo for the first 2 weeks in double blind fashion. After 1 week of drug-washout period, paroxetine and placebo groups were crossed over. The depression and anxiety symptoms were assessed with Hamilton Depression Scale(HDS) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale(HAS) at baseline and every 1 week during the trial periods. The levels of reduction in HDS and HAS scores from baseline after 2-week trial were compared between paroxetine- and placebo- treated periods by paired t-test. In all the 8 subgroups, statistically significant differences between paroxetine and placebo were found on the antidepressant efficacy after 2-week treatment. The antidepressant efficacy of paroxetine compared to placebo was most prominent in child and adolescent female groups. On anxiety symptoms, paroxetine was also significantly more effective than placebo. The antianxiety efficacy of paroxetine compared to placebo was most prominent in male and female child groups and young adult female group aged 18-35 years. As for the adverse effects of paroxetine, 3 out of 232 subjects reported mild indigestion and abdominal pain. however, in all the 3 cases, the symptoms improved without reduction of dosage or discontinuation of the drug. In conclusion, paroxetine showed significantly higher antidepressant and antianxiety efficacy compared to placebo in child-adolescent and adult depressive neurosis patients after 2-week treatment. Further trials of paroxetine in depressive neurosis are warranted to elucidate the long-term antidepressant and antianxiety efficacy of paroxetine.

  • Purpose : This study was performed to evaluate the antistress effects of two aromatic blends being composed of synergic essential oils and also to differentiate its effectiveness between two. Methods : The subject were 20(10 for men, 10 for women) for vital factors and another 20(10 for mem, 10 for women) for serum catecholamine. Vital factors(blood pressure, pulse), electroencephalograpy, psychological tests(SACL, STAI) and serum catecholamine were applied to the subjects. Results : 1. All two aromatic synergic blends revealed no significant differnce of vital factors after inhalation but stable conditions generally by lowering pulse and blood pressure after inhalation. 2. Both blends were significantly valuable in antianxiety and antistress effects statistically. There were no statistically difference between two blends. 3. There were no significant difference in all brain waves after inhalation of two blends but generally stable brain waves were seen in all areas. 4. There were antistress effects of both blends in accordance of decreased serum catecholamines after inhalation of both blends. There were no significantly difference between two blends statistically. Conclusion : Both two aromatic synergic blends reached effective antistress and antianxiety states after inhalation of each blends. There were no significant difference between two blends. Further studies about the effectiveness between the amount of aromatic essential oils and the duration of inhalation should be considered. Also clinical applications of these two aromatic synergic blending oils to develop the aromatic products would be affordable in the future.

  • Anxiety has been suggested to be related to many neurotransmitters in brain, such as norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine, cholecystokinin, and gamma-amino butyric acid. There are many studies to examine the relationship between anxiety and norepinephrine, and norepinephrine seems to be clearly related to the development of anxiety. We suggest that future studies to explore the pathophysiology of anxiety should be necessary, which include studies on antianxiety drugs, genetic studies, animal model studies, and brain imaging studies.

  • Diazepam (DZ) is one of the most frequently prescribed drugs as an antianxiety agent. muscle relaxant. and anticovulsant and sometimes causes intoxication due to accidental overdose, misuse or abuse. DZ is metabolized to nordiazepam (NDZ, desmethyldiazepam), oxazepam (OX) and temazepam (TM) which are also pharmacologically active, although OX and TM do not accumulate in blood or plasma to an appreciable extent. • The seeds of Zizyphus Jujuba have been used as an antianxiety agent for the treatment of insomnia from the earliest times. Sanjoinine-A, isolated from the seeds of Zizyphus Jujuba, have been found to have a minor tranquilizer activity. However this drug is poorly soluble in water. In order to increase the dissolution rate of sanjoinine-A, solid dispersions with PVP-MC and inclusion complex with ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$ were prepared and evaluated. All of these systems increased the dissolution rate of sanjoinine A comparing with sanjoinine-A free base. From pH-rate profile of sanjoinine-A at $60^{\circ}C$, it was found that sanjoinine A was relatively stable in acidic solution, but unstable in basic solution.

  • Diazepam (DZ) is one of the most frequently prescribed drugs as an antianxiety agent, muscle relaxant, and anticovulsant and sometimes causes intoxication due to accidental overdose, misuse or abuse. Screening or confirmation methods for DZ and NDZ in plasma are very important for clinical and toxicological studies and in forensic cases. GC/MS assay with SPE was developed for the determination of diazepam and its metabolite, nordiazepam in human plasma. Diazepam in plasma was extracted by a rapid and sensitive procedure based on C18 bonded-phase extraction. (omitted)

  • Chongmyung-tang(CMT, 聰明湯), oriental herbal medicine which consists of Polygaglae Radix(遠志), Acori Graminei Rhizoma(石菖蒲) and Hoelen(白茯神) has effect on amnesia, dementia. In order to evaluate effect of CMT on memory and learning in mice, CMT extract was used for studies. This paper describes the effects of CMT extract on memory and learning processes by using the passive and active avoidance performance tests, novel object recognition task and water maze task. The CMT extract ameliorated the memory retrieval deficit induced by ethanol in the passive avoidance responses but did not affect ambulatory activity of normal mice. These results suggest that CMT has an ameliorating effect on memory retrieval impairment. CMT extract decreased spontaneous motor activity(SMA) in the latter sessions of memory registration in active avoidance responses. These results suggest that CMT has partly transquilizing or antianxiety effects. In novel object recognition task to measure visual recognition memory, CMT-administered mice enhanced in long term memory for 1-3 days. In water maze task to measure spatial learning, which requires the activation of NMDA receptors in the hippocampus, spatial learning in CMT-administered mice was faster than in wild-type mice. These results suggest that CMT enhances memory and activates NMDA receptors.
