Thermally treated Korean ilmenite was characterized and used for water splitting to obtain hydrogen by photo-catalytic reaction. Experiments on specific surface area, X-ray diffraction and EDS showed that the formation of FeO, $Fe_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ ilmenite crystal surface increased the specific surface area with maximum value, phase change of $TiO_2$ at $600^{\circ}C$ and hetrogeneity. The hydrogen evolved in caustic soda solution on these ilmenites indicated that there was a maximum yield point at about $600^{\circ}C$. This point was explained with the change of the surface area due to sintering of newly formed FeO, $Fe_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$, as well as crystal phase change of anatase to rutile at $600^{\circ}C$. Produced hydrogen increased also as the concentration of caustic soda, but become constant at the near 1N solution.
$TiO_2$ films are fabricated using silk printing method. Heat treatment temperature of films is 600[$^{\circ}C$]. From the analysis of microstructure, grain size of $TiO_2$ films is about $0.2{\sim}0.3[{\mu}m]$. Thickness of films is 30.19[${\mu}m$] and surface uniformity of films is good. From the analysis of crystalline structure, $TiO_2$ films transform anatase phase to rutile phase. Capacitance of films increases according to increase relative humidity and decrease measuring frequency. Hysteresis characteristics of capacitance and impedance are best at 45[%RH] and 75[%RH] respectively. Impedance of films increases according to decrease measuring frequency.
The pure $TiO_2$ particles have been prepared in vapor-phase hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide(TTIP). The rate of TTIP hydrolysis was so fast that the overall rate of formation of $TiO_2$ was controlled by the rate of mixing of TTIP and $H_2O$. Thus, the primary $TiO_2$ particles were prepared in nano sizes to form chainlike aggregates due to rapid coagulation. The pure $TiO_2$ particles as prepared were amorphous at the reactor set temperatures below $400^{\circ}C$ and became anatase at the temperatures of $450^{\circ}C$ above while the weak rutile peaks were also observed above $800^{\circ}C$. The actual size of primary particles as prepared were reduced by increasing the reactor set temperature while their crystalline sizes as well as BET sizes increased by post-sintering.
Laser Raman spectroscopy has been used to study the tungsta catalyst supported on titania. The surface tungsten species which forms on titania after calcination appeared to possess a structure that is independent of the initial impregnation condition. The surface polytungstate seemed to be stable only at the interfacial region since the crystalline WO$_3$ phase was observed as long as the tungsta loading was in excess of monolayer coverage. The close intact and strong interaction between the polytungstate and the titania could be evidenced from the inhibition of the phase transition of TiO$_2$ from anatase to rutile.
In this paper, three types of CNT/$TiO_2$ composite electrodes were prepared with different methods. The changes in XRD patterns showed that the Electrode A contained a mixed phase of anatase and rutile while the Electrode B and Electrode C contained a typical single and clear anatase crystal structure. From SEM micrographs, $TiO_2$ particles were adhered on the surface of the CNT network in the forms of small clusters. The results of chemical elemental analysis indicated that the main elements such as C, O and Ti were existed. The results demonstrated that the efficiency of photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation for methylene blue (MB) was higher than that of photocatalytic (PC) oxidation. There was a clear enhancement trend of the MB degradation using the prepared CNT/$TiO_2$ composite electrodes with an increase of applied potential. Finally, the prominent PEC activities of the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites could be attributed to combination effects of photo-degradation of $TiO_2$, electron assistant of CNT and function of applied potential.
Titanium dioxide was prepared by Polymer Complex Solution Method(PCSM) according to the mole ratio of Titanium (IV) isopropoxide(TTIP)/solvent and polymer(Poly Ethylene Glycol). Polymer electrolytes were usually made by dispersing preproduced ceramic nanoparticles in a polymer matrix. Using this method, pure and nano-sized $TiO_2$ powder was synthesized through a simple procedure and polymer entrapment route. At the optimum amount of the polymer, the titanium ions are dispersed in solution and a homogeneous polymeric network is formed. The maximum intensity of anatase phase of $TiO_2$ was achieved by calcining at $500^{\circ}C$ for 2h. The synthesized $TiO_2$ powders were nano-sized and the average size was about 50nm. Anatase/Rutile ratio of the synthesized $TiO_2$ was 70%/30%.
$SnO_2$-mixed and Sn-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized via a hydrothermal process. $SnO_2$-mixed $TiO_2$ nanoparticles prepared in a neutral condition consisted of anatase $TiO_2$ nanoparticles(diamond shape, ~25 nm) and cassiterite $SnO_2$ nanoparticles(spherical shape, ~10 nm). On the other hand, Sn-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles obtained under a high acidic condition showed a crystalline phase corresponding to rutile $TiO_2$. As the Sn content increased, the particle shape changed from rod-like(d~40 nm, 1~200 nm) to spherical(18 nm) with a decrease in the particle size. The peak shift in the XRD results and a change of the c-axis lattice parameter with the Sn content demonstrate that the $TiO_2$ in the rutile phase was doped with Sn. The photocatalytic activity of the $SnO_2$-mixed $TiO_2$ nanoparticles dramatically increased and then decreased when the $SnO_2$ content exceeded 4%. The increased photocatalytic activity is mainly attributed to the improved charge separation of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles with the $SnO_2$. In the case of Sn-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles, the photocatalytic activity increased slightly with the Sn content due most likely to the larger energy bandgap caused by Sn-doping and the decrease in the particle size. The $SnO_2$-mixed $TiO_2$ nanoparticles generally exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than the Sn-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. This was caused by the phase difference of $TiO_2$.
A visible-light photoactive $TiO_{2-x}N_x$ photocatalyst was synthesized successfully by means of cogrinding of anatase-$TiO_2(a-TiO_2)$ in $NH_3$ ambient, followed by heat-treatment at $200^{\circ}C$ in air environment. In general, it is well known that the grinding-operation induces phase transformation of a-$TiO_2$ to rutile $TiO_2$. This study investigates the influence of the amount of $NH_3$ gas on the phase transformation rate of a-$TiO_2$ and enhancement of visible-light photocatalytic activity, and also examines the relation between the photocatalytic activity and the period of grinding time. The phase transformation rate of a-$TiO_2$ to rutile is retarded with the amount of NH3 injected. And the visible-light photocatalytic activity of samples, was more closely related to the period of grinding time than $NH_3$ amount injected, which means that the doping amount of nitrogen into $TiO_2$ more effective to mechanical energy than $NH_3$ amount injected. XRD, XPS, FT-IR, UV-vis, Specific surface area (SSA), NOx decomposition techniques are employed to verify above results more clearly.
