Aircraft combat survivability is an essential factor in the design of combat aircrafts that operate in an enemy air defense area. The combat aircrafts will be confronted with anti-aircraft artillery and/or surface-to-air missiles (SAM) from the ground, and their survivability can be divided into two categories: susceptibility and vulnerability. This article studies the prediction of susceptibility in the case of a one-on-one engagement between the combat aircraft and a surface-based threat. The weighted score method is suggested for the prediction of susceptibility parameters, and Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to draw qualitative interpretation of the susceptibility characteristics of combat aircraft systems, such as the F-16 C/D, and the hypersonic aircraft, which is under development in the United States, versus ground threat from the SAM SA-10.

Common data link systems are designed to transmit the imaginary and signal intelligence data at long distance air-ground line of sight(LOS) link. In this paper, we analyze the received power variation according to the communication distance of the common data link using curved earth 2-Ray model suitable for received signal power analysis of long distance air-ground wireless channel. We propose optimal elevation angle control method of the receiving antenna to reduce a power variation caused by ground-reflected wave. Proposed method can get additional link margin compared to the conventional method without any additional hardware performance enhancement.
The International air transportation industry provides a vital communication link which brings prosperity to many states in our modern age. This invaluable link has been threatened by terrorism. Airlines have been one of the most attractive targets in the eyes of terrorists for several reasons, including particularly the international and symbolic nature of aviation, and the potential of multigovernmental involvement which can inevitably generate wide publicity. Terrorist attacks against civil aviation have been committed since the earliest days of civil aviation history. The first attack against civil aircraft dates back to the early 1930s. Since then, aircraft hijacking and other forms of attack against air transport operations have become one of the most serious challenges to the safety of flying. In recent years, a new form of threats against civil aviation has appeared. Man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) in the hands of criminals, terrorists, and other non-state actors pose a serious potential threat to passenger air travel, the commercial aviation industry, and military aircraft around the world. The purpose of this study is to provide some countermeasures against such attacks. In order to foster a better understanding of the problem, an introduction of MANPADS and a brief history of attacks using MANPADS are presented. It also examines the level of threats, trends of attacks using MANPADS and the possible countermeasures to be taken by the international community.

Radars used by air-crafts have two important characteristics; First, they should have a real-time signal processing system finishing signal processing before deadline while getting and processing successive in-phase and quadrature data. Second, they can cover a lot of modes including A2A(Air to Air), A2G(Air to Gound), A2S(Air to Sea), and Ground Map(GM). So the structure of radar signal processing SWs in modern airborne radars are becoming more complicate. Also, the implementation of radar signal processing SW needs to reuse common code blocks between other modes for efficiency or change some of the code blocks into alternative algorithm blocks. These are the reason why the radar signal processing SW framework suggested in this paper is taking advantage of modular programming. This paper proposes an modular framework applicable on the airborne radar signal processing SW maintaining the real-time characteristic using the signal processing procedures for A2G/A2S as examples.

The SAM(Surface-to-Air Missile) systems will be operated until disposing of it after production, the necessary test and evaluation should be performed during the development stage to ensure the operational performance after deployment. As development of technologies related to the electromagnetic wave field of missile system is required, so the verification of the electromagnetic environment has become more important. Therefore it is necessary to carefully review whether there are any weaknesses through the analysis of the SAM system when establishing the test and evaluation procedure. This paper describes the general electromagnetic test procedure for SAM system and discusses the matters that need to be supplemented. Also, methods for supplementation and review results were written.
The aircraft has to be considered for safety very importantly because of peculiarity of flight in the air, so it should be retained through proper inspection and maintenance not only in production phase but also in operating phase. Recently, it is using the latest technology as engineering approach not depending on human factor to determine on maintenance needs, and domestic production rotary aircraft also has the health & usage monitoring system to measure and to monitor major components. However, continued vibration exceedance phenomenon occurred in production and operation phase because of inappropriate thresholds, and it confirmed as false alarm which is not necessary to repair. In this paper, it is described that operational concept of HUMS, and especially it contains a study result for efficiency of aircraft operation and ultimately the improvement of flight safety by optimizing HUMS thresholds to determine efficiently necessity of maintenance under limited conditions and by establishing inspection/maintenance procedures when the re-designated thresholds exceedance occurred.
MRO is important concept in military logistics. It is required to reforming military budget and manpower because of decreasing troops and other factors. For this reason, military logistics needs to change and improvement. MRO is necessary concept in this situation. In that case, How improve Naval Weapons Systems MRO for this changing time? For example, ROK air force applies Aerospace MRO industries in their Weapons Systems. But, ROK navy's MRO concept is uncertain and current MRO is divided just three step, Organizational Maintenance, Field Maintenance, Depot Maintenance. So it is time to develop systematic MRO concept for improving Naval Weapons Systems and Logistics. In this research, This0 study is about expanded application of PBL and the need to make relationship between Private enterprise and Military.

This paper focuses on reverse simulation methods to find and analyze the required performance of a defense system under a given combat effectiveness. Our approach is motivated that forward simulation, that traditionally employs the effectiveness analysis of performance alternatives, is not suitable for resolving the above issue because it causes a high computational cost due to repeating simulations of all possible alternatives. To this end, the paper proposes a reverse simulation software architecture, which consists of several functional sub-modules that facilitate two types of reverse simulations according to possibility of inverse model design. The proposed architecture also enable to apply various search algorithms to find required operational capability efficiently. With this architecture, we performed two case studies about underwater and anti-air warfare scenarios. The case studies show that the proposed reverse simulation incurs a smaller computational cost, while finding the same level of performance alternatives compared with traditional forward simulation. Finally we expect that this study provides a guide those who desire to make decisions about new defense systems development.

Exhaust gases emitted from internal combustion engines contain nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx), which are major air pollutants causing acid rain, respiratory diseases, and photochemical smog. As a countermeasure, scrubber systems are being studied extensively. In this study, the pressure drop characteristics were analyzed by changing the exhaust gas inflow velocity using a scrubber for a 700 kW engine as a model. In addition, the fluid flow inside the scrubber and the behavioral characteristics of the droplets were studied using CFD, and the design compatibility of the cleaning device was verified. Flow analysis was performed using inertial and viscous resistances by applying porous media to the complex shape of the scrubber. The speed of the exhaust passing through the outlet nozzle from the inlet was determined through the droplet behavior analysis by spraying, and the flow characteristics for the pressure drop were studied. In addition, it was confirmed through computational analysis whether there was a stagnation section in the exhaust gas flow in the scrubber or the sprayed droplets were in good contact with the exhaust gas.

In Korea military (KM), various military supplies are distributed to individual military units via three different multi-tier supply networks owned and operated by army, navy, and air force, respectively. Under the current supply networks, the chances for the occurrence of delayed supply, undersupply, and oversupply increase, and supply redundancy also can become a problem. Thus, KM is now trying to improve its current multi-tier supply networks by constructing logistics consolidation centers. Private companies operate logistics consolidation centers to effectively manage various types of inventories before delivering them to final customers. In this paper, we newly propose a mathematical model for building the optimized military supply network considering adopting the military logistics consolidation centers. Based on the real situation of KM, the proposed model was validated in terms of its feasibility, and it seems that the outcome (the location of the military logistics consolidation centers) of the proposed model can be one of the good alternatives for KM.
