  • The corrosive behavior of mild steel in 0.05 M to 10 M $H_2SO_4$ solutions containing different concentrations of tetrahydropyrimidine derivatives (THPM) was investigated using weight loss method, gasometric technique, electrochemical studies which include AC - impedance and potentiodynamic polarization method, atomic absorption studies and synergistic effect. The results obtained reveal that THPM derivatives is an efficient mixed type inhibitor but slightly anodic and it is more effective in reducing corrosion of mild steel in $H_2SO_4$ media. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the mild steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption reveal a strong interaction and spontaneous adsorption of THPM on the mild steel surface. The influence of temperature and inhibitor concentration on the corrosion of mild steel has also been investigated.

  • In the present study, immersion corrosion characteristics of Zn and Al thermal spray coating with sealer for the seawater heat exchanger are experimentally investigated. Total 8 coating types of Zn and Al thermal spray coating with silicone and epoxy sealer were tested with immersion corrosion testing in $80^{\circ}C$ 3.5%w NaCl solution and compared the corrosion characteristics between each coatings. To investigate the corrosion characteristics of the specimens, AC impedance, SEM, and thermal diffusivity were acquired and analyzed. As a result, on the surface of the specimens with silicone and epoxy sealer, blister did not occurred, so the sealers might be effective at increasing the corrosion resistance of the specimens immersed in the NaCl solution.

  • Corrosion of brass coated steel cords in the acetonitrile solution of sulfenamide derivatives, N-Cyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (CBTS), N,N'-Dicyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (DCBS), N-tert-Butylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (TBBS), N-tert-Amylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (TABS), and N-Oxydiethylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (OBTS) was investigated by potentiostatic anodic and cathodic polarization (Tafel plot), DC polarization resistance, and AC impedance measurements. The corrosion current densities and rates are 1.236 ${\mu}A /cm^2$ and 0.655 MPY for CBTS; 1.881 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ and 0.988 MPY for DCBS; 2.367 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ and 1.257 MPY for TBBS; 3.398 ${\mu}A /cm^2$ and 1.809 MPY for TABS, respectively. OBTS among derivatives under study shows the lowest corrosion density (0.546 ${\mu}A /cm^2$) and the slowest corrosion rate (0.288 MPY). Also, the charge transfer resistances and the double layer capacitances are 275.21 $k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 7.0 ${\mu}F{cdot}cm^{-2}$ for CBTS; 14.24 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^2$ and 26 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for DCBS; 54.15 $k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 26 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for TBBS; 0.96$k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 83 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for TABS, respectively. The weaker the electron donating inductive effect of derivatives is and the smaller the effect of steric hindrance is, the more the corrosion of brass coated steel cords in the acetonitrile solution of sulfenamide derivatives is prevented. The above results agree with that observed in the field of tire industry.

  • In the present research, we prepared the activated carbon (AC) sorbents to remove gas-phase mercury. The mercury adsorption of virgin AC, chemically treated AC and fly ash was performed. Sulfur impregnated and sulfuric acid impregnated ACs were used as the chemically treated ACs. A simulated flue gas was made of SOx, NOx and mercury vapor in nitrogen balance. A reduced mercury adsorption capacity was obtained with the simulated gas as compared with that containing only mercury vapor in nitrogen. With the simulated gas, the sulfuric acid treated AC showed the highest performance, but it might have the problem of corrosion due to the emission of sulfuric acid. It was also found that the high sulfur impregnated AC also released a portion of sulfur at $140^{\circ}C$. Thus, it was concluded that the low sulfur impregnated AC was suitable for the treatment of flue gas in terms of stability and efficiency.

  • Surface modification techniques are known to improve SCC by adding large compressive residual stresses to metal surfaces. This surface modification technology is attracting attention because it is an economical and practical technology compared to the maintenance method of existing nuclear power plants. Surface modification techniques include laser, water jet and ultrasonic peening, pinning and ultrasonic Nano-crystal surface modification (UNSM). The focus of this study was on the effect of ultrasonic amplitude in UNSM treatment on the corrosion properties of Alloy 600. A microstructure analysis was conducted using an optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD). A cyclic polarization test and AC-impedance measurement were both used to analyze the corrosion properties. UNSM treatment influences the corrosion resistance of Alloy 600 depending on its amplitude. Below the critical amplitude value, the pitting corrosion properties are improved by grain refinement and compressive residual stress, but above the critical amplitude value, crevices are formed by the formation of overlapped waves. These crevices act as corrosion initiators, reducing pitting corrosion resistance.

  • New wrought magnesium alloys have increasingly been developed in recent years for the automotive industry due to their high potential as structural materials for low density and high strength/weight ratio demands. However, their poor mechanical properties and low corrosion resistance have led to a search for new kinds of magnesium alloys with better strength, ductility, and high corrosion resistance. The main objective of this research is to investigate the corrosion behaviour of new magnesium alloys: Mg-Zn-Ag (ZQ), Mg-Zn-Mn-Si (ZSM) and Mg-Zn-Mn-Si-Ca (ZSMX). These ZQ6X, ZSM6X1, and ZSM651+YCa alloys were prepared using hot extrusion. AC, DC polarization and immersion tests were carried out on the extruded rods. Microstructure was examined using optical and electron microscopy (SEM) and EDS. The addition of silver decreased the corrosion resistance. The additions of silicon and calcium also affected the corrosion behaviour. These results can be explained by the effects of alloying elements on the microstructure of Mg-Zn alloys such as grain size and precipitates caused by the change in precipitation and recrystallisation behaviour.

  • Effects of chemical compositions and manufacturing conditions on mechanical properties and microstructures were investigated in order to obtain galvannealed high strength dual phase steel sheets with superior mechanical properties and coating properties. An intercritical annealing between Ac1 and Ac3 was conducted to produce the DP (dual phase) steel sheets, followed by quenching to room temperature. The purposes of Al addition are to reduce the iron oxidation with chemical composition (Si, Mn etc.) and to improve the wettability by liquid zinc. The present study will focus on the characterization for making dual phase steel sheets and enhancing the galvanizability of Al added DP steel sheets about continuous annealing line in CGL.
