  • Building Information modeling is playing an important role in transforming the construction industry. It helped the industry with better visualization, minimum design errors, and excellent planning of the construction activities. Time and cost saving can be effectively achieved by using BIM for any construction project. It improves information exchange between all the project stakeholders. However, the development of earthwork 3D BIM is still underway and has not been fully implemented yet. This paper presents the study of a complete process for Earthwork BIM design using Autodesk Civil 3D. A real site road construction project is used as a case study to explain the process of earthwork modeling, starting from laser scanning to 3D model. Quantity take off calculation is very important part of any road construction project so during this study earthwork volume from two 3D earthwork model is calculated. The results obtained through this study will be the basis for future work which has been concluded in this paper.

  • As the construction technology is rapidly advancing internationally, the necessity of virtual construction technology development is drastically demanded in the construction industry together with a fusion technology with information technology(IT). The construction technology will be changed as the paradigm of construction technology in the future. The establishment of building structural system in the virtual construction basis is necessary for the integration of construction process, and it will be expected to produce the effect of reduction of construction period and quality improvement through the environment of integration. This study is to present the analysis of the existing process of structural design, the content of research & development as per the building structural system on virtual construction basis and the direction of research.

  • The construction cost estimates during the design phase becomes the standard to judge profitability and validity, and is very important in various decision-makings by project owner. However, since approximate costs are quoted when many parts are undecided in the early stage of project, differences are bound to occur between the construction cost calculated through approximate quotation and that put into construction actually. Also, since in existing quotation works, quantity calculations have been dependent on the staff's manual work, involving error potential, and thus differences are likely in quantity calculation depending on the quotation staff's method of calculation. In this study, the process of creating space model to deduce 3D geometry information for approximate quotation in association with knowledge information and the expression for calculation of finishing area were proposed.

  • High-Rise Building Construction Project which has high uncertainty and complexity, causes lots of problems under construction. In particular, the integration between design phase and construction phase highly affects a construction project in terms of cost and time. To possibly make the flexible response and preliminary verification against the construction planning problems in high rise building project, this paper proposes the Engineering-Construction Management System based on 4D CAD that put the time factor together with 3D CAD. The usefulness of this system has been verified through the actual project. It could helps the reducing trials and errors during construction phase by catching the factors on problems of project. Ultimately it will allow users to save project cost and duration by field application.

  • Reinforcing bars (rebar) comprise an integral part of a concrete structure, and play a major role in the safety and durability of the building. However, the actual placement or installation of rebar is not planned and controlled by the detailer. Recently, 4D simulations, using 3D model and scheduling software, have been used to improve the efficiency of the construction phrase. However, 4D simulators have not been introduced at the detailed level of work, such as rebar placement. Therefore, this paper suggests a BIM-based simulator for rebar placement to determine the sequence with which rebar is placed into the form. The system using Autodesk Revit API automatically generates rebar placement plans for a building structure, and labels the placement sequence of each individual bar or set of bars with ascending numbers. The placement sequence is then visualized using Autodesk Revit Structure 2012. This paper provides a short description of a field assessment and limits.

  • This study examines 3D scanning and how it is used in the construction field. 3D scanning technology was applied to a real space and compared with drawings in the planning and construction stages. 3D scanning technology has been widely applied in the field of construction, design, construction, and safety. The results of comparing 3D scanning data with drawings are as follows. First, the external shape and dimensions do not show much difference. Second, the internal shape and dimensions are different. Third, indoor lighting layouts are different in all buildings. 3D scanning should be an essential element in the construction stage before completion and should be used for supervision tasks such as material management, improving the efficiency of construction, and safety management through continuous 3D scanning using automation and robots. Follow-up studies in the field of architecture, such as BIM and process management, will be needed.

  • 3D printing has the unique advantage of the ability to customize freeform product even in small quantity. However, we need to select and apply the only necessary parts of it because of the high cost of the manufacturing technology. It is of critical importance in irregular-shaped curtain walls to ensure precision of construction as well as quality fo finish. Complex shape that have structural members at varying angles can have nodes of different shapes making it unfeasible to construct using a general node connection detail. Therefore, this study aims to utilize smart node system using 3D printing as a solution to complex irregular-shaped curtain wall design.

  • Appearance finish is important for amorphous buildings to maximize amorphousness, and GFRC, glass, and metal are mostly used as exterior materials for amorphous buildings currently applied. However, the existing exterior materials showed limitations in amorphous expression, texture, and color expression. In this study, a 3D stereoscopic panel mold was manufactured using the FDM method, one of the 3D printing technologies, and 3D stereoscopic panel production was reviewed using Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC), which has excellent physical and mechanical performance and expression. In order to overcome the limitations of unstructured expression, a UHPC 3D stereoscopic panel using the FDM method, one of the 3D printing technologies, was manufactured. Unlike steel molds, FRP molds, and EPS molds, the FDM method can be applied to various materials, and complex shapes are implemented. If it is used using recyclable materials as well as PLA filaments used in the FDM method, it will overcome the limitations of amorphous expression and activate the production of 3D stereoscopic panels that have secured eco-friendliness.

  • This paper introduces a new method for identification of building energy performance problems. The presented method is based on automated analysis and visualization of deviations between actual and expected energy performance of the building using EPAR (Energy Performance Augmented Reality) models. For generating EPAR models, during building inspections, energy auditors collect a large number of digital and thermal imagery using a consumer-level single thermal camera that has a built-in digital lens. Based on a pipeline of image-based 3D reconstruction algorithms built on GPU and multi-core CPU architecture, 3D geometrical and thermal point cloud models of the building under inspection are automatically generated and integrated. Then, the resulting actual 3D spatio-thermal model and the expected energy performance model simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis are superimposed within an augmented reality environment. Based on the resulting EPAR models which jointly visualize the actual and expected energy performance of the building under inspection, two new algorithms are introduced for quick and reliable identification of potential performance problems: 1) 3D thermal mesh modeling using k-d trees and nearest neighbor searching to automate calculation of temperature deviations; and 2) automated visualization of performance deviations using a metaphor based on traffic light colors. The proposed EPAR v2.0 modeling method is validated on several interior locations of a residential building and an instructional facility. Our empirical observations show that the automated energy performance analysis using EPAR models enables performance deviations to be rapidly and accurately identified. The visualization of performance deviations in 3D enables auditors to easily identify potential building performance problems. Rather than manually analyzing thermal imagery, auditors can focus on other important tasks such as evaluating possible remedial alternatives.

  • As construction projects get bigger and more complex, communication and information flow among participants become key success factors of a project. Accordingly, construction projects to respond to these changes being made in the introduction of BIM (Building Information Modeling). But as 2D drawings are still to be widely used in practical fields, it is very important that 2D drawing information could be easily and clearly projected from 3D BIM data. In this study suggest that efficiency of design phase in BIM-based construction projects for can cause confusion and additional work in traditional to BIM.
