  • Vegetative node and rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. were planted in spring and autumn and harvested after one and two years to determine the appropriate harvesting time which produced a high yield. Plant height, leaf number and branch number per plant were increased in order of rhizome planted in spring and harvested after two year(RST), rhizome planted in autumn and harvested after one year(RAO), vegetative node planted in autumn and harvested after one year(VNAO), and vegetative node planted in spring and harvested after one year(VNSO). Leaf area index and dry leaf weight in VNSO were highest on August 16, but dry weights of stem and rhizome was increased until harvesting time. The appropriate harvesting time was October 17, in RST, November 9 in RAO and VNAO, and November 13 in VNSO. Yield in autumn planting was more increased than that in spring planting and also that in RST was 443kg per 10a and increased by 2.8 times compared to RAO. However the yield in the rhizome planting was more increased by 17 percent than the vegetative node planting, the latter planting was inexpensive and economic for purchasing seed materials.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of cultural methods(cutting, flower removal) on growth and quality of B. falcatum L. Jeongseon local cultivar collected in Korea and Mishima local cultivar introduced from Japan were used. Some of the results obtained are as follows; Jeongseon local cultivar showed less stem branches and shoot weight compared to Mishima. However, Jeongseon local cultivar showed tall plant height, high root fresh and dry weight, and high levels of saikosaponin-a and total-saikosaponin, but low saikosaponin-c content than that of Mishima. Both cultivars seeded on March 20 had longer main root, bigger stem diameter, few stem branch, and high saikosaponin-c content compared with those of late seeded one, April 30. Growth characteristics such as plant height, stem diameter, stem branch number, shoot weight, root diameter, root fresh and dry weight, and root branch number were increased in a low planting $density(30{\times}15\;cm)$, but the content of saikosaponin was not affected by planting density. Jeongseon and Mishima cultivars seeded on April 10 with $30{\times}15\;cm$ planting density and April 30 with $30{\times}10\;cm$ planting density contained highest total saikosaponin levels, respectively. However, average root dry weight was not affected by planting time or density in both Bupleurum cultivars. Both cutting and flower removal increased the length of main root, fresh and root weight, and saikosaponin-a, saikosaponin-d and total-saikosaponin in Jeongseon cultivar than that of Mishima. As the harvesting time was delayed, plant height, stem diameter, shoot weight, length of main root, root fresh and dry weight were increased, but content of saikosaponin-a, saikosaponin-d and total-saikosaponin were decreased.

  • We studied the accumulation and partitioning of dry weight (DW) and nitrogen (N) in different parts of field-grown 'Fuyu' persimmon to elucidate that the foliar applications of supplemental N in June or September compared favorably with the traditional soil application in securing leaf area and fruit production. We also estimated the proportion of N permanently removed from the tree at the end of a growing season. Urea was applied either to leaves in June and/or September or to the soil in June and September for three consecutive years, and the trees were excavated in November for analyses. Total DW ranged from 4.2-4.8, 8.7-9.2, and 17.1-21.5 kg in a 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old tree, respectively, without statistical difference among the four treatments. Of the total DW, 3.3-10.2% was in shoots, 5.7-10.5% in leaves, 8.3-31.4% in aerial woods, 13.0-27.0% in root, and 28.0-59.3% in fruits. As the trees became more productive, DW proportion of fruits significantly affected that of the root: in 6-year-old trees, root DW accounted for only 10.6-15.8% of the tree total when fruit DW accounted for 50-60%. N contents ranged from 24.6-28.3, 48.3-53.5, and 98.3-122.6 g in a 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old trees, respectively, without statistical difference among the treatments. Of the total N, 6.2-11.5% was in shoots, 16.7-24.3% in leaves, 17.6-23.5% in aerial woods, 17.2-37.5% in roots, and 16.9-34.4% in fruits. As in DW, the increase in the proportion of N in fruits decreased in the root most significantly. Application methods for supplemental N did not affect the proportion of DW and N removed from the tree through abscising leaves and harvested fruits. Percentage of DW removal was 41 in 4- and 5-year-old trees, but it was 61 in more productive 6-year-old trees; that of N was 39, 43, and 49%, respectively. No significant changes in the contents of DW and N in field-grown trees, as well as their percentages removed from the tree at the end of the season, demonstrated that foliar application of supplemental N was as good as soil applications with much less N.

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimum planting dates and density of one year old Bupleurum falcatum L. to improve its productivity and quality. Two cultivars of B. falcatum, originated from Jeongseon, Korea and Mishima, Japan were used. Some of the results obtained are as follows : Jeongseon cultivar showed less stem branches and shoot weight compared to Mishima. However, Jeongseon cultivar showed tall plant height, high root fresh and dry weight, and high levels of saikosaponin, but low saikosaponin content than that of Mishima. Both cultivars seeded on March 20 had long main root, big stem diameter, few stem branch, and high saikosaponin c content compared to those of late seeded one, April 30. Growth characteristics such as plant height, stem diameter, stem branch number, shoot weight, root diameter, root fresh and dry weight, and root branch number were increased in a low planting $density(30\;{\times}\;15cm)$, but the content of saikosaponin was not affected by planting density. Jeongseon and Mishima cultivars seeded on April 10 with $30\;{\times}\;15cm$ planting density and April 30 with $30\;{\times}\;10cm$ planting density contained the highest total saikosaponin levels, respectively. • This study was conducted from 2017 to 2018 to determine habitat aspects of Acheilognathus signifier, an endangered species reintroduced (2010~2012) to Heukcheon Stream, a tributary of the Hangang River, Korea. A total of 329 individuals were collected in 2017 (two surveys) and 723 individuals were collected in 2018 (four surveys) at about 5 km habitat area, including the discharge station. A. signifier's habitat was about 0.4 to 1.2 meters deep in slow water flow upstream of the discharge area. It was a place with many boulders and cobbles. The spawning period was estimated from April to June in terms of spawning behavior and collected juvenile size. Sex ratio of females (438) and males (412) was 1 : 0.94. Estimated age of A. signifier based on their total length distribution during the spawning period (April) indicated that 1-, 2-, 3-year old groups and more than 4-year-old group were 32~43 mm, 50~61 mm, 62~75 mm, and 76~89 mm, respectively. Age-specific composition costs differed depending on the timing of the collection. They were relatively high in the order of first-year (juvenile)>third-year> and fourth-year or higher, showing a stable age structure. Thus, A. signifier reintroduced to Heukcheon Stream has successfully settled down and formed a stable population, showing a tendency to proliferate.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of cultural soil textures on growth and quality of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer from 2009 to 2010. The obtained results from this study were summarized as follows; The growth of stem and leaf were superior to one year old G. uralensis, and surface runner and root growth tended to be better in 2 years old G. uralensis. The weight of stem and leaf were heavy in sandy loam, and plant height, branches, stem diameter in sandy clay loam were better than other soil texture. The growth characteristics, such as length, number and weight of surface runner, was better in order of sandy clay loam > sandy loam > loamy sand. The length of main and lateral root was longer in loamy sand soil than other treatments, and the diameter of main and lateral root was more thicker in sandy loam than others. The number of lateral root was higher in the sandy loam than other treatments. The yield of main and lateral root was in order of sandy loam > sandy clay loam > loamy sand soil. Marketable root yield of one year old and two year old G. uralensis were increased 57% and 71% in sandy loam compare to a loamy sand as 204 kg/10 a, respectively. The content of glycyrrhizinic acid was the hightest as 1.62% in sandy clay loam soil in one year old, and as 1.58% in sandy loam soil in two years old of G. uralensis, respectively.

  • We have developed an in vitro micropropagation system via shoot formation from axillary buds using nodal segments of Corylopsis coreana. Explants from both juvenile tree (one-year-old greenhouse stock seedlings) and mature tree (ten-years-old tree in nursery) were compared with regard to propagation efficiency. Combined treatment of both BA and zeatin were effective on shoot proliferation since the best result was obtained on MS medium supplemented with 0.5∼3.0 mg/L zeatin and 0.2 mg/L BA. Generally, juvenile explants were better in both shoot proliferation and growth than mature explants. However, as the duration of in vitro culture was proceed to 6 months, explants from mature tree also produced three shoots per explant. Distinctive differences in rooting and adaptability to soil of shoots obtained from mother trees. Whereas shoots originated from juvenile explants rooted as high as 97%, those from adult explants showed 62% rooting. Similar result was also observed in soil acclimatization. The plantlets derived from juvenile plants survived 67%, while only 48% of those from adult trees survived. The results showed a possibility of the micropropagation of Corylopsis coreana through shoot formation from axillary buds. In addition, the advance of the research still remain to enhance the frequency of acclimatization of plantlets from mature trees for practical application.

  • The productive structure and the productivity of ${\times}$Populus albaglandulosa plantations, where are middle parts of the Korean peninsula, were studied by means of stratifying clip technique and of allometry. The densities of stands in the sample areas were 693 trees/ha in 6 year-old plantation and 527 or 625 trees/ha in 9 year-old one. The photosynthetic part of the productive structure was not shown normal conical form but layering. So this was efficient to transmit solar radiation into the stand floor. The standing crop of the terrestrial parts of 6 year-old plantation was 18.11 ton/ha and that of 9 year-old one 38.8 to 47.3 ton/ha. The wood volume to trunk to 6 year-old was $31.3m^3/ha$ and that of 9 year-old was 68.8 to $83.9m^3/ha$. The annual net production of 6 year-old plantation was 4.8 ton/ha/year and that of 9 year-old one was 10.0 to 11.7 ton/ha/year and its wood volume of trunks was 17.9 to $21.1m^3/ha/year$. In the 9 year-old plantation the standing crop or the annual net production was different between two sample areas. This seemed that the cause was not due to chemical character but to physical character of soil.

  • To investigate the effect of sulfate deposition un forest tree nutrition, 15 forest stands of Pinus thunbergii were selected throughout Yochon industrial complex, in which is influenced by chronic air pollution. Concentrations of sulfate sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium were analysed fur current and 1-year-old needles of Pinus thunbergii tree. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. Significant higher accumulation of sulfate S, computed with that of unpolluted needles, was observed at all sites, ranging front 0.11% to 0.35% in current needles, and from 0.13% to 0.32% in 1-year-old needles. 2. Ranging from 0.60% to 1.42% in current needles, and from 0.58% to 0.88% 1-year-old needles, respectively, nitrogen concentrations were significantly lower at 7 sites for current needles, and at all sites for 1-year-old needles than at unpolluted site. 3. Phosphorus and potassium levels were significantly lower at very few sites, compared with unpolluted site. 4. Calcium concentrations were significantly lower at 8 sites and 9 sites for current and 1-year old needles than at unpolluted site, ranging from 0.123% to 0.352% and from 0.201% to 0.371% in 1-year old needles, respectively. 5. Ranking from 0.077% to 0.152% in current needles, and from 0.056% to 0.105% in 1-year-old needles, magnesium concentrations were lower at only 2 sites for current needles tut at 12 sites for 1-year-old needles. 6. There were significant declines of concentrations of calcium and magnesium in current needles as sulfate accumulation increased. For 1-year-old needles, there were significant negative correlations-hips between sulfate and nitrogen, potassium, calcium, and magnesium concentration. It is concluded that deposition of sulfuric air pollutant deteriorated nutrients status, resulting in tree decline, in Pinus thunbergii forest in Yochon industrial complex.
