  • This study shows possibility of active fault, throughout analyzing distributional features of tectonic and fluvial geomorphology and mineral composition of fault fracture clay, at Jinbu fault-line system in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Province. Fault-line valley was formed remarkably in the upper reaches of Odae River and upper reaches of Yeongok River according along Jinbu fault-line. Landforms show rectilineal distribution at right shore slopes of Odae River in Ganpyeong-ri, southern zone of Jinbu fault-line system, related to the tectonic processes, such as triangular facet, kernbut, kerncol and alluvial fan. Fault fracture clay zones were developed at 5 outcrops($jbf1{\sim}5$), located in kerncol. Particularly, jbf1 fault outcrop, developed at granite saprolite, has obvious fault plane and fault clay composed of illite and laumontite. The Jinbu Fault-line along jbf4-2-3-5 may be formed by regional compressive stress, and jbf1 fault may be suggested a tributary fault of the Jinbu fault-line formed before the late Pleistocene. The vertical displacement of the east and west blocks of the Jinbu Fault-line is estimated in $0.024{\sim}0.027m/ka$.

  • A cluster of micro-earthquakes in the transition zone between the continental and oceanic crust in the East Sea was relocated using the Joint Hypocenter Determination (JHD) method. In order to increase the number of available earthquakes and to take advantage of the high detection capability of the Korea National Seismic Network (KNSN), continuously recorded seismic data were reviewed to identify 56 micro-earthquakes occurring in a 20 km ${\times}$ 20 km region. The initial earthquake hypocenters were determined using a routine single event location method. Single event locations do not reveal any significant structures in the study area. After relocating the earthquake hypocenters using the JHD technique, the earthquakes were clustered and four potential faults responsible for earthquake generation in the subsurface were delineated. They are defined by two sub-vertical and two steeply south-dipping seismicities located next to each other.

  • Electrical impedance tomography(EIT) is a relatively new imaging modality in which the internal impedivity distribution is reconstructed based on the known sets of injected currents and measured voltages on the surface of the object. We describe a dynamic EIT imaging technique for the case where the resistivity distribution inside the object changes rapidly within the time taken to acquire a full set of independent measurement data. In doing so, the inverse problem is treated as the state estimation problem and the unknown state (resistivity) is estimated with the aid of extended Kalman filter in a minimum mean square error sense. In particular, additional electrodes are attached to the known internal structure of the object to enhance the reconstruction performance and modified Tikhonov regularization technique is employed to mitigate the ill-posedness of the inverse problem. Computer simulations are provided to illustrate the reconstruction performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • This study, geological survey was carried out in order to study on the geology, geological structure and volcanic activity of the Ulleung-do volcano body. Ulleung-do is the volcano body of about 3,000m heights from the East Sea seabed. The geology of Ulleung-do is divided into basaltic agglomerate, trachytic agglomerate, trachyte, trachytic pumice and trachyandesite in ascending orders. The faults in caldera of Nari Basin came to make the reverse triangle style in compliance with sinking. The faults in circumference of Nari Basin are ranging with northeast-southwest direction and northwest-southeast direction. The Quaternary volcanic activities in the Ulleung-do are divided into 5 activity period. The engineering geologists and the applied geologists were not easy to apply because complicated geology of Ulleung-do. Therefore, this study supplied simple geology of Ulleung-do for them.

  • Some reverse fault lines are passing through the alluvial fans and west hill slope of Bulguksa mountains including Mt. Toham in the directions of N-S and NW-SE. The study area is known as relatively unstable, because of active faults. Assuming on the record of Samguksagi about earthquakes, the architects in the construction of the Bulguksa Temple should have recognized the possibility of breakdown from the earthquakes and the need for an unique structure against at that time. Against earthquakes, Grengee technique, a stonework construction technique following wooden one and use of Chuduseok(Dongtleseok or Chumchaseok) were applied for the construction of the Bulguksa Temple. By designing the foundation stone with hole, a structure is prevented from modification that pillars secede from a foundation stone in spite of horizontal load of earthquake while wood construction is strong frame at earthquake. The Bulguksa Temple is usually evaluated to be a beautiful architecture from the appearances like the weight balanced structure with unique decoration. Impressive architectures are beautiful in balance and harmony coming from the important and specific rolls in its own way by each part of whole structure. This beauty comes from the science.

  • Pulmonary infarction is rarely diagnosed with certainty except at postmortem examination. Part of this uncertainty is because of the inability to distinguish between hemorrhage, congestive a electasis, and necrosis clinically and radiographically. The pathogenesis of pulmonary infarction is poorly understood. It is dif%cult to induce pulmonary infarction in animals by ligation of the arterial supply to the lung. Many factors seem to be important in its pathogenesis, in addition to congestive heart failure, malignant tumor, thrombophlebitis, chronic obstructive lung disease, nephrotic syndrome, and postopeiative state. However, pulmonary infarction have not been reported in association with chest trauma. We report a case of pulmonary infarction associated with fractures of right clavicle and multiple ribs. A 45-year-old male had admitted due to right chest pain and dyspnea, which developed after right chest trauma occurred at about 3 weeks ago. He was treated at local clinics under the diagnosis of fractures of right clavicle and ribs until the admission. Chest CT disclosed a huge mass with central low density in right upper lobe, and small masses were also seen on both l ng fields. Open lung biopsy resulted in negativity for the malignancy. Clinical symptoms and radiological findings were not improved by conservative treatment. Right upper lobectomy was done eventually. The final diagnosis was pulmonary infarction. And, the patient has been well after operation.

  • The geomorphic deformation of the alluvial fans by tectonic movement was investigated along the lineaments of the northern part of the Bulguksa fault system. Based on the aerial photographs interpretation and field surveys Bulguksa fault system was identified as an active reverse fault which has displaced the Quaternary fan deposits. Bulguksa fault system strikes for the direction of NW-SE and N-S. These two lineaments of active fault are crossing at Jinty village in Kyungju city and the fault plane forms here almost vertical dip. Thelateral pressures from the two directions have possibly influenced on the formation of the vertical dip at Jinty village. It should be resulted from that the two pressures responsible for the active reverse fault at which the one with the NW-SE strike thrusts the hanging wall of Tohamsan block southwestward and the other pressure with the N-S jstrike thrusts it westwrd over the foot wall of the fan deposits. The marine oxygen isotope stage 8(0.30-0.25 Ma. BP) and stage 6(0.20-0.14 Ma. BP) are presumed to be the ages of high and middle surfaces of the alluvial fan, repectively. The vertical dispiacements on the high surface along the Bulguksa fault system are about 10.5m at Ha-dong, 9.5-10.5m at Jinhyun-dong, and about 10m at Jinty village. And the vertical displacement on the middle surface was measured about 6m high at Ha-dong. The average slip rate of vertical displacements is calculated about 0.03-0.043mm/y.

  • The adsorption characteristics of phenol by the powdered activated carbon (PAC) were investigated by series of batch experiments. The pseudo-second-order model described the adsorption kinetics adequately with correlation coefficients over 0.999, indicating chemical adsorption as the rate-limiting step. The kinetic rate constants were from 0.55 to 19.81 mg $mg^{-1}min^{-1}$. The adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir isotherm, indicating the homogeneous mono-layer adsorption onto the surface of the adsorbent. The values of activation energy, enthalpy and entropy were 17.44 kJ $mol^{-1}$, -8.26 kJ $mol^{-1}$ and -18.94 J $mol^{-1}K^{-1}$, respectively. The Gibbs free energy was in the range of -2.89~-2.14 kJ $mol^{-1}$. The results show that the phenol adsorption is physical, spontaneous and exothermic reaction.
