  • In this paper, the characteristics of LFM and CW signals in active sonar environment is investigated. CA, OS and TM CFAR processors are applied to the received CW/LFM signals which are plotted in the range/doppler domain. The performances of detection are analyzed. Particularly, using the real data, we certified that the results of the experiments are identical with the theoretical performance.

  • Opinion retrieval which searches the opinions expressed in documents by users cannot outperform significantly yet traditional topical retrieval which searches the facts. Therefore, the focus of this paper is to identify the statistical characteristics which can be applied to opinion retrieval by comparing and analyzing the term statistics of opinion and non-opinion documents in the blog domain. The TREC Blogs06 collection and 150 TREC topics are used in the experiments. The difference between term probability distributions in opinion documents is measured by JS divergence, and the difference according to the topic types and topic domains is also investigated. Moreover, the term probabilities of opinion terms are analyzed comparatively. The main findings of this study include the following: it is necessary to consider the topic-specific characteristics for the opinion detection; it is effective to extract positive and negative opinion terms according to the topics; the topic types are complementary to the topic domains; and special attention has to be given to the usage of the positive opinion terms.

  • The handoff area is the region where a call can be handled by the base station in any of the adjacent cells, and duration time is viewed as the time a mobile station resides in the handoff area. In this paper, probability distribution about hand off time one of important parameter at traffic modelling in mobile communication system was estimated. First, point statistic is applied using sample data obtained from simulation result to choose the group of distribution of handoff duration time. Second, parameters are estimated to decide specific distribution function. For this, the value of parameters is calculated using MLE(Maximum Likelihood Estimate.) and goodness of fit test is performed. finally these results show that handoff duration time follows gamma distribution.

  • This is an in-dept case study that extract the problems showing remarkable gender gap in 6th graders and analyze the difference between boys and girls in the process of problem solving. This study can be summarized as the following. First, according to the result of basic study, the parts are divided into measurement, probability and statistics and regularity. And then test problems and face-to-face talk contents are developed. Second, the distinct features between boys and girls, follow-up study and face-to-face talk. As a result, five characteristics of gender gap are selected. Through the results of this study, the improvement of teaching & learning development and evaluation considering gender is expected in the classrooms of elementary schools.

  • According to prior research studies, comparison of two data sets promote informal and formal statistical reasoning, which may mediate descriptive and inferential statistics. However, there has been relatively little attention given to the mediation of both descriptive and inferential statistics. We attempted to identify which statistical concepts or factors students used and how they applied concepts or factors to make decisions when they compared data sets. We also investigated the characteristics and changes of the view of concepts and factors. As a result, we identified that students paid attention to data value, center, spread, and sample, which are important factors of inferential statistics. Students' understanding of each factors were sometimes appropriate for inferential statistics, but sometimes not. From the results, we suggest instructional ideas for a task which can connect descriptive and inferential statistics.

  • In this paper, in the last 4 years(2014~2017 school year), we classified the probability and statistical items based on the evaluation scope of the mathematics subject content knowledge which were presented by the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation, and the classified items were analyzed. As a result, First, in order to induce normalization of the probability and statistical curriculum, four assessment field should be evenly distributed. Second, integrated thinking and comprehensive analytical thinking assessment is required. Third, item an epilogue should be used to measure mathematical thinking and logical competence. Fourth, the ratio of the number of items in probability and statistics to the number of that was 7.7%~10.0%, and the ratio according to the item weighting was 5.0%~7.5%. Fifth, it maintains the policy of stabilizing a good the level of difficulty of the items. Finally, probability and statistical assessment should focus on measuring problem solving ability from an inductive point of view.

  • In this paper, we propose a new hybrid speed function for image segmentation using level set. A new proposed speed function uses the region and boundary information of image object for the exact result of segmentation. The region information is defined by the probability information of pixel intensity in a ROI(region-of-interest), and the boundary information is defined by the gradient vector flow obtained from the gradient of image. We show the results of experiment for an various artificial image and real medical image to verify the accuracy of segmentation using proposed method.

  • This study is based on the recognition that teacher educators have to focus their attention on developing pre-service teachers' statistical reasoning for statistics education of school mathematics. This paper investigated knowledge on pre-service teachers' statistical reasoning. Statistical Reasoning Assessment (SRA) is performed to find out pre-service teachers' statistical reasoning ability. The research findings are as follows. There was meaningful difference in the statistical area of statistical reasoning ability with significant level of 0.05. This proved that 4 grades pre-service teachers were more improve on statistical reasoning than 2 grades pre-service teachers. Even though most of the pre-service teachers ratiocinated properly on SRA, half of pre-service teachers appreciated that small size of sample is more likely to deviate from the population than the large size of sample. A few pre-service teachers have difficulties in understanding "Correctly interprets probabilities(be able to explain probability by using ratio" and "Understands the importance of large samples(A small sample is more likely to deviate from the population)".

  • Understanding of randomness is essential for learning and teaching of probability and statistics. Understanding of randomness prompts to understand natural and social phenomena from the point of view of mathematics, and plays a role of base in understanding of judgments based on rational interpretation on these phenomena. This study examined whether pre-service teachers recognize this, and they understand randomness included in various contexts. According to results, they did not have a understanding of randomness in the context related to measuring, while they grasped randomness in simple and joint events. This implies that they lack the understanding of variability which is essential in the context of measuring. This study, therefore, suggests that the settings of measuring should be introduced into probability and statistics education, especially that data from measuring should be analyzed focusing on the variability in the data set.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze of gifted students' improvement on mathematical attitude and problem-solving ability through project-based materials in science high school. For this study, research questions are established as follows. 1. Does the project-based materials-used instruction have a positive effect on improving problem-solving ability? 2. Does the project-based materials-used instruction have a positive effect on improving mathematical attitude? To solve these research questions, this study employed a survey and interview type investigation for gifted students' mathematical attitude and problem-solving ability. A subject of classes were randomly selected among the 11th grader in D science high school and designated one class as the experimental group and the other class as the control group. Twelve hours of the project-based materials-used instruction and the traditional textbook-oriented instruction had been carried out in each class. Findings on this study are as follows: First, the project-based material-used instruction is shown to be more effective in enhancing problem-solving ability than the traditional textbook-oriented instruction. Second, the project-based material-used instruction is shown to be more effective in improving mathematical attitude than the traditional textbook-oriented instruction.
