The geological CO2 sequestration in underground geological formation such as deep saline aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs is one of the most promising options for reducing the atmospheric CO2 emissions. The process in geological CO2 sequestration involves injection of supercritical CO2 (scCO2) into porous media saturated with pore water and initiates CO2 flooding with immiscible displacement. The CO2 migration and distribution, and, consequently, the displacement efficiency is governed by the interaction of fluids. Especially, the viscous force and capillary force are controlled by geological formation conditions and injection conditions. This study aimed to estimate the effects of surfactant on interfacial tension between the immiscible fluids, scCO2 and porewater, under high pressure and high temperature conditions by using a pair of proxy fluids under standard conditions through pendant drop method. It also aimed to observe migration and distribution patterns of the immiscible fluids and estimate the effects of surfactant concentrations on the displacement efficiency of scCO2. Micromodel experiments were conducted by applying n-hexane and deionized water as proxy fluids for scCO2 and porewater. In order to quantitatively analyze the immiscible displacement phenomena by n-hexane injection in pore network, the images of migration and distribution pattern of the two fluids are acquired through a imaging system. The experimental results revealed that the addition of surfactants sharply reduces the interfacial tension between hexane and deionized water at low concentrations and approaches a constant value as the concentration increases. Also it was found that, by directly affecting the flow path of the flooding fluid at the pore scale in the porous medium, the surfactant showed the identical effect on the displacement efficiency of n-hexane at equilibrium state. The experimental observation results could provide important fundamental information on immiscible displacement of fluids in porous media and suggest the potential to improve the displacement efficiency of scCO2 by using surfactants.

We developed the first automatic design system targeting a promising hybrid CMOS-Nanoelectronics Architecture called CMOL. The CMOL architecture uses NOR gates to implement combinational logic. In this hybrid CMOS-nanoelectronics architecture, logical functions and the interconnections share the nanoelectronics hardware resource. Towards automating the CMOL physical design process, we developed a model for the CMOL architecture, formulated the placement and routing problems for the CMOL architecture subject to the unique CMOL specific constraints, and solved it by combining a placement algorithm with a gate assignment algorithm in a loop. We validated the proposed approach by implementing several industrial strength designs.

The present study investigates the performance of dynamic mixed model (DMM; Zang et ai.) in a channel with strong wall injection through a Large eddy simulation (LES) technique. The DMM results are compared with those of DNS and the results obtained with popular dynamic Smagorinsky model (DSM). Better agreement is achieved when using the DMM with box filter than DSM and coarse DNS in predicting the first and second order statistics as well as large-scale structures of velocity and temperature fields. Such favorable features of DMM are attributed to the fact that it explicitly calculates the modified Leonard stress term and only models the remaining cross and the SGS Reynolds stress terms and, thus, it reduces the excessive burden put on the model coefficient of DSM. Also it is demonstrated that the DMM can be successfully extended to the prediction of temperature (passive scalar) field where strong streamwise inhomogeneity exists.

In a turbulent free shear flow, the large scale motion is characterized by the intermittent flow which arises from the interaction between the turbulent fluid and the irrotational fluid of the environment through the mean velocity gradient. This large scale motion causes a bulk convection whose effect is similar to the spatial diffusion process. In this paper, the total diffusion process is proposed to be approximated by weighted sum of the bulk convection due to the large scale motion and the usual gradient diffusion due to small scale motion. The diffusion term in conventional .kappa.-.epsilon. model requires on more equation of the intermittency transport equation. A production term of this equation means mass entrainment from the irrotational fluid to the turbulent one. In order to test the validity of the proposed model, a plane jet is predicted by this method. Numerical results of this model is found to yield better agreement with experiment than the standard .kappa.-.epsilon. model and Byggstoyl & Kollmann's model(1986). Present hybrid diffusion model requires further tests for the check of universality of model and for the model constant fix.
This paper introduces a geometric modelling system adopted in a newly developed preprocessor for finite element analysis of three dimensional structures. The formulation is characterized by hierachical construction of structural model which consists of control points, curves, surfaces and solids. Various surface and solid modelling schemes based on blending functions and boundary representation are systematized for finite element mesh generation. The modelling system is integrated with model synthesis and operations which facilitate modelling of complex structures.
The active transport characteristics of $K^+$ and $Na^+$ pumping system of cell membrane model which irradiated by high energy x-ray(linac 6MeV) was investigated. The cell membrane model used in this experiment was a $Na^+$ type sulfonated copolymerized membrane of styrene and divinylbenezene. The initial flux of the ion was increased with increase of both $H^+$ ion concentration. In this experiment range(pH 1.5-5, temperature $36.5^{\circ}C$), the initial flux of $K^+$ which was not irradiated by radiation was found to be from $2.09{\times}10^{-4}$ to $1.32{\times}10^{-3}mole/cm^2{\cdot}h$ and that of $Na^+$ from $7.09{\times}10^{-4}$ to $1.09{\times}10^{-3}mole/cm^2{\cdot}h$. the initial flux of $K^+$ which was irradiated by radiation was found to be from $21.0{\times}10^{-4}$ to $16.7{\times}10^{-3}mole/cm^2{\cdot}h$ and that of $Na^+$ from $62.0{\times}10^{-4}$ to $20.6{\times}10^{-3}mole/cm^2{\cdot}h$. The ratio $K^+$/$Na^+$ of membrane was about 1.10. And the driving force of pH of irradiated membrane was significantly increased about 9-20 times than membrane which was not irradiated. As active transport of $K^+$ and $Na^+$ of cell membrane model were abnormal, cell damages were appeared at cell.

In this paper, equivalent circuit model and novel model parameter extraction method of a silicon(Si) substrate are presented. Substrate coupling through Si-substrate is quantitatively investigated by analyzing equivalent circuit with operating frequency and characteristic frequencies (i.e., pole and zero frequency) of a system. For the experimental verification of the equivalent circuit and parameter extraction method, test patterns are designed and fabricated in standard CMOS technology with various isolation distances, substrate resistivity, and guard-ring structures. Then, these are measured in l00MHz-20GHz frequency range by using vector network analyzer. It is shown that the equivalent-circuit-based HSPICE simulation results using extracted parameters have excellent agreement with the experimental results. Thus, the proposed equivalent circuit and parameter extraction methodology can be usefully employed in mixed-signal circuit design and verification of a circuit performance.
This paper proposes two methods of estimating prior distribution to improve the performance of rapid speaker adaptation based on maximum a posteriori linear regression (MAPLR). In general, prior distribution of the transformation matrix used in MAPLR adaptation is estimated from all of the training speakers who are employed to construct the speaker-independent model, and it is applied identically to all new speakers. In this paper, we propose a method in which prior distribution is estimated from a group of reference speakers, selected using adaptation data, so that the acoustic characteristics of the selected reference speakers may be similar to that of the new speaker. Additionally, in MAPLR adaptation with block-diagonal transformation matrix, we propose a method in which the mean matrix and covariance matrix of prior distribution are estimated from two groups of transformation matrices obtained from the same training speakers, respectively. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methods, we examine word accuracy according to the number of adaptation words in the isolated word recognition task. Experimental results show that, for very limited adaptation data, statistically significant performance improvement is obtained in comparison with the conventional MAPLR adaptation.

Distributed operation of overall structural design process, by which product optimization and process parallelization are simultaneously implemented, is presented in this paper. The database-interacted hybrid method, which selectively takes the accustomed procedure of the conventional method in the framework of the optimal design, is utilized here. The staged application of design constraints reduces the computational burden for large complex optimization problems. Two kinds of numeric and graphic processes are simultaneously implemented by concurrent engineering approach in the distributed environment of PC networks. The former is based on finite element optimization method and the latter is represented by AutoCAD using AutoLISP programming language. Numerical computation and database interaction on servers and graphic works on independent clients are communicated through message passing. The numerical experiments for some steel truss models show the validity and usability of the method. This study has sufficient adaptability and expandability, in that it is based on general methodologies and industry standard platforms.
