Anatomical characters such as stem, leaf, ovary, calyx lobe, ultrastructure of stigma, epidermis of leaf blade and midvein, corolla lobe, nectary, seed coat and pollen were examined on 6 taxa of Korean Ophelia, including 5 taxa distributed in south Korea and one taxon considered to be the variation type of Ophelia wilfordi, in order to clarify the limits of intersection and interspecies and to establish the taxonomic position. One taxon distributed in north Korea was also included in the description of species by observation of herbarium specimen of the University of Tokyo in Japan. The two sections were successfully distinguished by internal structure of ovary, morphology of nectary, surface sculpturing of corolla lobe and pollen, ultrastructure of seed and seed coat, which were useful characters to distinguish taxa higher than species. The variation type of Ophelia wilfordi was not distinguished with other species except for absent or present of purple spot in corolla lobe.
Cymopterus melanotilingia (Apiaceae) was reviewed by external morphology and cross-section of leaf-margin and mericarp, and the taxonomic position of species and genus was reexamined. Based on these results, the description and adistribution map of C. melanotiligia were obtained. The leaf-margin forms a collenchymatous ridge by projecting toward the lower part. One mericarp has 2-lateral ribs and 2-intermediate ribs and the other mericarp has 2-lateral ribs and 1-dorsal rib, suggesting each of them is asymmetric. These characters show that this species does not belong to the genus Ostericum s.s., but should be treated as the genus Cymopterus.
Anatomical and ultra-structural investigations on the vegetative and reproductive characters include stem, leaf, ovary, sepal, corolla, stigma, and seed surface on 10 taxa of the Korean Gentiana (Gentianaceae) were carried out to clarify the section and species limitation, As the results, taxonomic boundaries of the section, subsection, and series were recognized by using characters such as stem, leaf, sepal, ovary, and corolla. Also the seed morphology and testa surfaces were well defined at the species level.
Some morphological and anatomical characteristics of four Abies species in Korea were investigated to find the characteristics and the taxonomical relationship between the species. The results were summarized as follows: There was no significant difference in needle thickness and number of hypodermic cell layer among 18 morphological and anatomical characteristics of cone and needle between the species. A. koreana and A. nephrolepis were similar in above fourteen characters and A. holophylla and A. firma were also similar in the 14 characters. A. koreana and A. firma showed similarity in above two characters. Main resin canals of needles in A. koreana and A. nephrolepis were situated in leaf margin (L-LM), those of A. holophylla, in L, L-M and M, and that of A. firma fully in other locations except L.
In order to evaluate taxonomic status of Latcuca hallaisanensis H. $L{\acute{e}}v$., an endemic species of the Jeju-do Island, we investigated fruit wall structure and chromosome morphology. The fruit wall structure had 10-11 obtuse costae in the transverse section. The costa was wholly occupied by libriform fiber cells, and the underlying fibersclereid tissue was only one to three cells layers thick. Also, the intercosta lacked fiber-sclereid layers. Somatic chromosome numbers and karyotype of Latcuca hallaisanensis were recorded for the first time. This diploid species (2n=10) with the same basic number of x=5 has the total chromosome length $23.3{\mu}m$ and the length of each chromosome falls in $1.9{\mu}m-2.9{\mu}m$. It possess the karyotype complement i.e., 3sm+2st and a characteristic chromosome pair (No. 1 and 2) with a secondary constriction at the distal portion of the short arms. The overall similarity in external morphology (involucre, achene etc), chromosome morphology as well as in fruit wall anatomy between Lactuca hallaisanensis and Crepidiastrum s. lat. clearly indicated that this species should be treated as Crepidiastrum, rather than Lactuca.
Anatomical features of both leaves and stems of the four mistletoes in Korea (Viscum album var. coloratum, Korthalsella japonica, Loranthus yadoriki, L. tanaka) and of their secondary haustorial structure within several host plants were investigated. Among the four mistletoes, there were diagnostic characters of the anatomy of leaves and stems which enabled us to distinguish the four taxa. Leaves were observed to have three distinct characters including unifacial or bifacial leaves, the number of vascular bundles in the midveins, and the level of development of sclerenchyma cells. There were four diagnostic characters of stems: overall morphology of stems in transverse view, degree of cuticle development, arrangement of vascular bundles, and features of the sclerenchyma and pith. In order to determine secondary haustorial traits, the research focused on the seven host plants of L. yadoriki and on the five host plants of K. japonica. The following features were found to be important: presence or absence of an aerial runner root, the shape of the haustorial strand and flange, the degree of penetration into host tissues, and their development of shaft in transverse view, the development both of secondary haustorial cells and short tracheid in hyphae. Korthalsella japonica and L. yadorki were clearly distinguished by these characters. The secondary haustorial forms in each host were somewhat different, due to varying degrees of development in the strength of the host plants' wood. However, qualitative characters like the final position of the secondary haustorial penetration into host tissues and the development of short tracheid cells were not only affected by the degree of development of the host plants, but also useful for the systematic study.
Leaf anatomical study of Pinus thunbergii collected from 12 different coastal regions of Korea was conducted to understand the adaptive variation on leaf traits. Basic anatomical features are typical pine needle type with fibrous epidermis, 2-3 layered hypodermis, sunken stomata, monomorphic mesophyll, and well-represented bundle sheath. The bundle sheath surrounds a couple of vascular bundle separated by parenchyma bands. On the basis of their position, the resin ducts are of three types; external, medial and internal of the bundle sheath. The total number of resin ducts in all samples varies from 4 to 12. The stomata were found on stomatal bands throughout the leaf surface. Important dissimilarities observed on P. thunburgii leaf are the number and position of resin ducts and the number of stomata rows in leaf surface.
Brain gene expression information is closely related to the structural and functional characteristics of the brain. Thus, extensive research has been carried out on the relationship between gene expression patterns and the brain's structural organization. In this study, Principal Component Analysis was used to extract features of gene expression patterns, and genes were automatically classified by spatial distribution. Voxels were then clustered with classified specific region expressed genes. Finally, we visualized the clustering results for mouse hippocampal region gene expression with the Allen Brain Atlas. This experiment allowed us to classify the region-specific gene expression of the mouse hippocampal region and provided visualization of clustering results and a brain atlas in an integrated manner. This study has the potential to allow neuroscientists to search for experimental groups of genes more quickly and design an effective test according to the new form of data. It is also expected that it will enable the discovery of a more specific sub-region beyond the current known anatomical regions of the brain.

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is a method commonly used for early diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal lesions. However, 10-20 percent of the gastric lesions are reported to be missed, due to human error. And countries including the US, the UK, and Japan, the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) suggested guidelines about essential gastrointestinal parts to take pictures of so that all gastric lesions are observed. In this paper, we propose deep learning techniques for classification of anatomical sites, aiming for the system that informs practitioners whether they successfully did the gastroscopy without blind spots. The proposed model uses pre-processing modules and data augmentation techniques suitable for gastroscopy images. Not only does the experiment result with a maximum F1 score of 99.6%, but it also shows a error rate of less than 4% based on the actual data. Given the performance results, we found the model to be explainable with the potential to be utilized in the clinical area.
