  • Although the Dept. of Geography in Korea has contributed to the social development of Korea with a remarkable growth for a short period, their social status and influence have not greatly improved and the graduates in Geography do not have many job opportunities. The low social statue and the limited job opportunities of the Dept. of Geography in Korea was due to the failure of the creation of their demand and the expansion of their sphere in response to the social changes and developments of Korea. In France, the Dept. of Geography has raised their social standings through the suited curriculum system to generate their demand and enlarge their domain with the social changes and development of French. The Dept. of Geography in Korea also needs not only the expansion of sphere but the building of the proper curriculum system for the creation of demand.

  • The main aim of the paper is to identify the position or status of Korean economic geography in changing global economic geography by reviewing papers published in Korean geographical journals since the mid-1950s. Since the late 20th century as economic geography has developed significantly with the introduction of new research issues, methodologies, and theory and concepts, economic geography in Korea also has gone through rapid development in terms of both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. The paper attempts to analyze trends in Korean economic geography by reviewing agricultural, industrial, commercial geographies, and others since the mid-1950s. The review of economic geography in Korea would be based on four periods classified by research issues and approaches; foundation (~1950s), positioning (1960s and 1970s), jump and rush (1980s and mid-1990s), and transitional period (late 1990s~). Agricultural geography in Korea has decreased due to increases of the interests in industrial geography since the 1980s. In particular, since the late 1990s industrial geography has undergone a significant transition in accordance with the emergence of new theories of institutional perspectives, centering around issues on value chains, innovative cluster, cooperative and competitive networks, foreign direct investment, flexible specialization and venture ecology. Along with this, there has been changes in the interest of commercial geography in Korea from researches on periodical markets, the structure of store formats, and distributions by commodity, to researches on producer services and retailer's locational behaviors and commercial supremacy according to the emergence of new store formats. Since the late 1990s, many researches and discussions associated with the new economic geography began to emerge in Korea. Various research issues are focused on analyzing changes of local, regional and global economic spaces and their processes in relation to institutional perspectives, knowledge and innovation, production chain and innovative networks, industrial clusters and RIS, and geographies of service. Although economic geography in Korea has developed significantly both in quantitative and qualitative perspectives, we pointed out that it has still limited in some specific scope and issues. Therefore, it is likely to imply that its scope and issues should be diversified with new perspectives and approaches.

  • This study aims to analyze empirically the scale of region that has been covered in "The Journal of the Korean Geographical Society(대한지리학회지)" and "The Journal of the Korean Association of Regional Geographers(한국지역지리학회지)" over the last 20 years. Generally speaking, it was found that "The Journal of the Korean Geographical Society" has published a relatively more number of articles with larger scale of region and "The Journal of the Korean Association of Regional Geographers" has published more articles with smaller scale of region than the counterpart journal. Also, this study has revealed that the ratio of the studies in both journals utilizing both town/village scale(읍 면 스케일) and city/county scale(시 군 스케일) has increased continuously with marginal fluctuations. On the other hand, the ratio of the studies in both journals combining single metropolis/province scale(시 도 스케일), multiple metropolis/province scale(시 도보다 큰 스케일), and state scale(국가 스케일) has decreased continuously in general. In sum, this study is expected to offer useful data as well as future research direction to the Korean geographers.

  • This paper is to consider the developmental process of Korean geography on the context of socio-spatial transformations of Korea, and then to suggest briefly its alternative visions. The development of knowledge including geography seems to be made under imperatives of social functions and structure in a given period, and knowledge in turn gives power for a further development of society. Modem geography in Korea has progressed on the context of capitalist development of Korean society which can be divided into two phases, that is, the period of developmentalism and that of neoliberalism. Korean geography has been developed under influence of ideologies of developmentalism and neoliberalism, and in turn has made some contributions to socio-spatial policies. Korean geography in the future, it can be suggested, should go beyond both developmentalism and neoliberalism, and put socio-spatial welfare, civil society or community, and environmental justice into its central issues.

  • The objective of my paper is to investigate historical change in concepts of medical geography and to present its historical vision. Modern medical geography was established in the name of medical topography in Europe where it had to control tropical diseases in the course of exploration and voyages for colonial interests. England developed medical geography in the name of sanitary reform, France did so for civilizing mission, and geomedicine prevailed in Germany. The twentieth century witnessed two traditions of medical geography, with focus on disease ecology and medical care system, respectively. In addition, the paper emphasizes the significance of cartography of disease as knowledge as power. As the identity of place becomes increasingly important in relation to health at the around of the twenty-first century, geography of health has emerged as a new promising discipline independently of medical and public health geography.

  • Geography has been defined traditionally as a discipline on regions, that is, as chorography, which means regional geography. Regional geography, which once withered up with the development of positivist geography, has gained recently its vitality. In particular, as social theories have been introduced actively into geography since the 1980s, new methodologies for regional geography have been suggested through a series of debates, for example, on spatiality, locality, restructuring, and post-modernism, though there remain still some important conceptual issues which have not yet settled down. On the other hand. new regional geography has made its development and significance for regional development in the age of the so-called globalization in the reality. That is, new regional geography has been required for a systematic conceptualization of region and for a theoretical consideration on the dynamic change of regions in the process of globalization. Furthermore, an emphasis can be given to geography education for new regional geography in order to understand new strategies for regional development.

  • Military Geography is a literature studying the application of geographical elements to military behaviour. The elements of military geography including topography greatly influences on building military art and theory. The military art applied on korean pennisula from the period of ancient three countries(Koguryeo, Shilla, Paekche) has been developed maintaining consistent stream reflecting topographic features. Despite the close relationship between building of military art and military geography's elements, the study for korean military geography has been depressed and the discourses of literature has been insufficient. But, in the western study of military geography, the study vitalization efforts studying military peace keeping and humanitarism activity are ongoing. Based on the current trend of western study and the analysis of existing korean study, this treatise proposes three plans to improve the study and education of korean military geography. The key contents of plans are comprised with the improvement of education curriculum, the construction of council between relevant organism, and the installation of subdivision in relevant geographical society. The possibility shaping up the identity of korean military geography as a common literature can be increased by enhancing the study toward peace and humanitarism and specifying the method for development as noted on this study.
