  • This study aims to examine the impact of RUBRIC writing on students' mathematical modeling. By analyzing 23 tenth grade students' responses to seven problems related to mathematical modeling, we found that the students who used RUBRIC writing could not only get more correct answers but also could use more various representations and mathematical models than the students who did not use it. The students with RUBRIC writing also could translate between reality and mathematics more appropriately, and better explain the process to solve the problem than the counterpart. It implies that RUBRIC writing can help improve students' mathematical modeling and problem solving as an alternative instruction and assessment.

  • This study is to analyze students' perception about junior SW education by giving the questionnaire to the participants in Scratch-day. We taught the creative computing to 558 juniors on Scratch-day in 2013, 2014 and researched the questionnaire about their perceptions of creative computing education. We analyzed the current status of SW education from this process and extracted considerations about elementary SW education. We also proposed the possibility of its application to the elementary and middle school education. As a result of this study, it is observed that students think that creative computing education is fun and useful, and want to apply it to the public school education. Also, male students think more positive than female students about an intention to use, and students who have experienced with Scratch education consider it more useful and positive intention to use than those who have not. According to the structural model, it is found that the pleasure, easy of use, and usefulness of creative computing education have a positive influence on students' perception that it should be applied to public school education.

  • In this study, the effects of a teaching strategy based on interactive formative assessment on students' science concept understandings and science-related attitudes were investigated. Students' perceptions toward this teaching strategy were also examined. Eight classes chosen from a co-ed middle school in Seoul. Four classes were assigned to the experimental group and the other four classes were assigned to the control group. After the instructions, tests regarding students' conceptions and science-related attitudes were administered. We also interviewed 24 students randomly chosen from the experimental group to investigate their perceptions toward the teaching strategy used. The results showed that the teaching strategy used was more effective for enhancing students' science concept understandings. However, there was no significant difference in science-related attitudes between the two groups. For the experimental group, no significant differences were found in the gain scores of the conceptions tests between the subgroups by previous achievement or cognitive levels. From interviews, it was found that students thought that the teaching strategy used encouraged much interactions and motivated them to think, and that teacher's appropriate feedbacks were helpful to their understanding scientific concepts.

  • The incident during commuting to school happened frequently in these days, such that the government announced the student commuting safety policy for addressing to implement the safety management system of the unsafer school commuting zone. In this paper, a commuting tracking system is proposed that notifies the location of vehicles and the boarding status of student using BLE beacon and smart phone GPS function. The commuting tracking system that gets the data from the system server of driver's smart phone GPS location and UUID of the beacon which had provided students has configured to provide notifications to parents and related administrators. It provides real-time information about whether a student boarding, boarding times and bus locations for parents and administrators. It verifies the disembarking time for each student and also provides to driver to secure if any student tries to board the wrong school bus and if any students is left behind in the bus.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the statistical literacy in elementary school students when they beginning inference. Picto-graphs provide statistical information and often data-related arguments they certainly qualify as objects for interpretation, for critical evaluation, and for discussion or communication of the conclusions presented. For research, the inference from pictograph task was designed and statistical literacy standards for evaluating the student's level was presented based on prior studies. Evaluating student's statistical literacy is meaningful in that it can check their current level. To know the student's current level can help them achieve a higher level of performance. The outcomes of this research indicate that pictograph can provide a basis for rich tasks displaying not only student's counting skills but also their appreciation of variation and uncertainty in prediction. Raising statistical thinking by students is an important goal in statistical education, and the experience of informal statistical reasoning can help with formal statistical reasoning that will be learned later. Therefore, the task about the inference from a pictograph, discussions on statistical learning of elementary school children are expected to present meaningful implications for statistical education.

  • Recently in algebra curriculum, to recognizes and explains general nile expressing patterns is presented as the one alternative and is emphasized. In the seventh School Mathematic Curriculum regarding 'regularity and function' area, in elementary school curriculum, is guiding pattern activity of various form. But difficulty and problem of students are pointing in study for learning through pattern activity. In this article, emphasizes generalization process through research activity of pictorial/geometric pattern that is introduced much on elementary school mathematic curriculum and investigates various approach and strategy of student's thinking, state of symbolization in generalization process of pictorial/geometric pattern. And discusses generalization of pictorial/geometric pattern, difficulty of symbolization and suggested several proposals for research activity of pictorial/geometric pattern.

  • In this paper, some factors such as the perspective of children, instructional materials(especially activities in textbooks for elementary school mathematics), and teacher's questioning styles are discussed as ones influenced on students' immersion in leaner-centered instruction. This discussion is based on the author's two implementations of the kind of two instructions. About the first theme, constructivists assert that even children who are in elementary school can have reflective abstracting ability. Teachers' asking questions with the belief differ from ones with traditional perspective of children, which is relevant the third factor. They value and respect learners' thinking outcomes, even though they are not sometimes wrong and have errors. Also, they have them opportunities to think different from others and to ask how they get their answers. To do these, they frequently ask open-ended questions, not closed. All of them is possible through the activities provided in textbooks. Some characteristics which can prompt such teacher's questions using activities in elementary mathematics textbooks are discussed.

  • Recently, the number of students taking basic statistics in liberal arts courses at universities nationwide has been increasing significantly. Students who learn statistics only for one semester are more likely to live as consumers than producers of statistical analysis in the future. What consumers need is statistical literacy and thinking skills rather than statistical methods. This paper deals with what points should be considered in order to develop textbooks that improve statistical thinking.

  • Within the field of mathematics education there is an active movement which attempts to apply more beneficial learning activities, like mathematical writing activities, for the students. In this context, the current study attempts to identify elementary school students' cognitive and affective aspects as they participate in a novel writing activity, the 'mathematical fairy tale.' Some positive outcomes from the mathematical fairy tale writing activities were as follows: First, from these mathematical writing activities, students began to reconstruct and adapt the mathematical contents they've learned through their reflective thinking. Second, while the mathematical fairy tale writing activities were going on, the communication of mathematics was greatly animated between the students, and they could get the restudying chance about they've learned. Third, from these mathematical writing activities, many of students became discover the practical using case of the mathematical contents they've learned and they perceived the necessity of the mathematics learning. Forth, from these mathematical writing activities, most of students felt the delights of the mathematics learning and the achievement, so they indicated that their attitude for the mathematics course was changed positively. Lastly, students began to concentrate on their mathematics learning through participation in mathematical fairy tale writing activities of their own accord.
