The correlation between Smartphone Addiction and Psychiatric Symptoms in College Students (일 대학생들의 스마트폰 중독과 정신건강과의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify the relationship between smartphone addiction and psychiatric symptoms and the difference in severity of psychiatric symptoms by the degree of smart phone addiction in order to raise awareness of mental health problem. related to smartphone addiction in college students. Methods: Two hundreds and thirteen university student survey data was collected from December 5th to 9th of 2011 in South Korea using smartphone Addiction Scale, and the Symptom Checklist-90-Revision that was translated with korean for the psychiatric symptoms. Results: Respondents were classified as upper addicted (25.3%) and lower addicted group (28.1%). Addicted scores were positively correlated with psychiatric symptom scores. Obsessive-compulsive score was the most highly correlated with addiction scores. There were significant different in psychiatric symptom scores by the groups. Upper groups was 1.76 times higher than lower in total psychiatric scores. The addicted group used smartphone significantly longer per day and more satisfied with than lower addicted group. Conclusion: Although the smartphone was first introduced not so long ago, the addiction rate is exponentially increasing in students. The results proved that there is an inevitable correlation between the smartphone addiction and the severity of psychiatric symptoms.

Effects of Secondhand Smoke on Mental Health in Adolescents (청소년의 간접흡연이 정신건강에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of secondhand smoke on depression and suicidal ideation in adolescents. Methods: The study used the raw data of the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2018). Age, academic achievement, living with family, economic status, and stress were adjusted and the relationship between secondhand smoke and depression and suicidal thoughts was analyzed by gender. Results: The results showed that secondhand smoke had a significant effect on mental health of adolescents. Male students who experienced secondhand smoke at school and at public places had 1.41 times and 1.37 times higher depression rates, respectively. Female students who experienced secondhand smoke at home, school, and public places had 1.27 times, 1.35 times, and 1.39 times higher depression rates, respectively. Suicidal thoughts were 1.17 times and 1.22 times higher among male students who experienced secondhand smoke at school and at public places. Female students who experienced secondhand smoke at home, school, and public places had 1.12 times, 1.08 times, and 1.21 times more suicidal thoughts. Conclusion: Secondhand smoke has a significant effect on adolescent depression and suicidal thoughts. Therefore, efforts should be made to have institutional changes and increased awareness across the country, such as homes, schools, and communities, to prevent exposure to secondhand smoke.

A Study on the Factors that Influence Life Satisfaction of Child with ADHD: Focused on Caregiver's Factors (초등학교 ADHD 아동의 삶의 만족에 영향을 미치는 요인: 양육자 요인을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand parent's influencing factors on life satisfaction of child with ADHD through path-analysis. 297 cases of children with ADHD and their caregiver were selected by children and adolescents psychiatric clinic and community mental health center in Korea as the research targets. ADHD symptoms of the children, nurturing stress, self-esteem and depression of the caregiver, and the children's life satisfaction were measured for every case. As a result, it was found that severity of ADHD symptoms lowered the children's life satisfaction through decline in parents' self-esteem, depression and nurturing stress. Based on these results, it is important to control child's ADHD symptoms in order to increase child's life satisfaction, but intensive intervention for caregiver should also be accompanied.

Effect of Empowerment Education Program on Empowerment and Mental Health in High School Student (능력증강 교육프로그램이 고등학생의 능력증강과 정신건강에 미치는 효과)

  • Purposes: This study was to examine the effects of empowerment education programs on empowerment and mental health in high school students. Methods: This study involved a nonequivalent control group pre-test and post-test design. The subjects for this study consisted of 421 high school students who attended two general high schools in Busan. The 211 students in the experimental group received empowerment education training, while the 210 students in the control group did not. The data were collected from March 2, 2004 to July 20, 2004. The empowerment education program consisted of 17 separate 50-minute sessions. The questionnire was developedby authors and revised it based on experts' advice. SPSS 11.0 program was used to analyze the data. Chi-square test and t-test were used to test the homogeneity of general characteristics and dependent variables. Student's t-test was used to evaluate the differences between the experimental group and control group after the treatment. Results: Just as we hypothesized, the experimental group exhibited higher empowerment scores than the control group. For subcategory, Score of self-efficacy and self-esteem increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group. However, the score of decision-making ability did not increase significantly. The data failed to support our second hypothesis that the experimental group would have higher mental health scores than the control group. Although the score of self-scale increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group, the score of social-support and psychopathology did not. Conclusions: Empowerment education programs are effective for empowerment of high school students. However, such training is effective only for promoting the self scale but not overall mental health. Thus, we suggest the application of the empowerment education program to make high school students aware of their abilities. Furthermore, we suggest the implementation of mental health programs to supplement such empowerment education programs.

Impact of Self-Esteem and Test Anxiety on Mental Health in students of Dental Hygienics (일부 치위생과 학생의 시험불안, 자아존중감과 정신건강과의 관계)

  • This study is a descriptive paper addressing the relationship between test anxiety, self-esteem and the mental health levels of freshmen and third year students of Dental Hygienics. In late 2011, we received a total of 298 questionnaires from freshmen and third year Dental Hygienics students of three South Korean universities, located specifically in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The timing of this questionnaire was significant because it was one week prior to midterm examinations. The results were as follows:1. There was a statistically significant relationship between age (t=3.017, p<.001) and grade(t=2.665, p<0.05), subjective health status(t=27.513, p<.001). 2. The lower the participants' reported mental health in general, the higher their level of test anxiety (r=.565, p<.001), broken down into two subdivisions: cognitive text anxiety (r=526, p<.001) and emotional test anxiety (r=.534, p<.001). 3. When considering the factors that influence the general mental health of participants, there were age differences. For first year students, their subjeetive health status (${\ss}$=-.300, p<.001) and test anxiety (${\ss}$=.530, p<.001) were significant. For third year students, this was also true (subjective mental condition: ${\ss}$=-.242, p<.001 and test anxiety: ${\ss}$=.350, p<.001) but self-worth was also significant (${\ss}$=.377, p<.001). The results of this study suggest that the key factors that influence the mental health level of students Dental Hygienics are test anxiety, subjective appraisal of health level, and general self-worth. A systematic approach is therefore needed to improve students' mental health and reduce test anxiety. Health management programs which address and test students' physical health will also be important in improving student performance and welfare.

Relations Between Mental Health and Physical Activities of Middle to High School Students (중고등학생의 정신건강과 신체활동과의 관련성)

  • Objective: The study analyzed degrees of participation in physical activities, demographic and sociological characteristics of middle and high school students, and the relations to mental health related factors, based on "Korea youth risk behavior web-based survey." Therefore, the study can be used as preliminary data for establishing mental health promotion plans for youth and setting contents and directions of health education. Methods: The study analyzed the data, collecting from 75,066 middle and high school students, regarding their demographic and sociological characteristics, mental health, and relations to physical activities by using SPSS Win 15.0. Results: 19.1% of the students answered they had seriously contemplated suicide during the past 12 months, and 43.2% said they are usually under enormous pressure. 55.3% answered that academic achievements and the pressure from future paths are major factors of their stress. The students showed noteworthy differences in whether they think about suicide depending on whether the students live with their father or mother. The study found that the students whose parents' levels of education are low, or their academic records are low, or economic conditions are poor are more likely to think about suicide. The students tend to think more about killing themselves if they spend more time sitting to study than being engaged in physical activities, or spend little time walking. And they are more likely to think about committing suicide if they spend little time exercising, or are not engaged in physical activities on the playground or a gym in PE classes.

A Status and Associated Factors of Mental Health on Girls' High School Students (여고생의 정신건강 실태와 관련요인)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the status and associated factors of mental health on girls' high school students. Methods: The participants were 446 academic girls' high school students and 240 vocational girls' high school students of the 1st graders in Busan. The data were collected from April 28, 2009 to May 30, 2009. Survey was developed in the form of self-report five-point likert scale(1-5) using Lees Instrument of mental health(1986) that revised from Derogatis et al's Symptom Check List-90(1976). The higher score of this scale means worse status of mental health. Result: The score of mental health of subjects was low and the mean was $1.69{\pm}.50.$ The depression mean was the highest among mental health sub-variables. The mental health of the vocational girls' high school students was worse than the academics. As for subjects in mental health by their various characteristics, there are significant by school type(p<0.001), economic status(p<0.001), father's job(p<0.001), parent's marrital status(p<0.001), cognitive health status(p<0.001), record(p<0.05), character(p<0.001), satisfaction of life(p<0.001), needs for help on mental health(p<0.001). Conclusion: The intervention program needs to improve mental health of vocational high school girls' students as well as academic high school girls' students, and need to establish depression relieving nursing intervention program for girls' high school students.

A Study on the Relation Between Self Care Agency and Mental Health in Vocational High School Students (일 실업계 고등학생의 자가간호역량과 정신건강과의 관계 연구)

  • This study was designed to identify the relation between Self-care Agency and mental health in vocational high school students of a rural area. The subjects for this study were 210 students living in Chonnam province: the breakdown of first, second and third grade students were 74, 78 and 58 respectively. The data were collected from April 1 to 4, 1997. The instruments used in this study were the Self-Care Agency Questionnaire developed by Deneys (1981) and the simplified SCL-90 developed by Lee, H. K. (1986) for measuring Mental Health. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation using the SAS $PC^+$ Program. The results were as follows: 1. The mean score of the Self-care Agency was 2.43. 2. The mean score of Mental Health was 2.11. 3. There were significant differences in sex (t=6.13, p= .014), religion (t=4.65, p= .032), the educational level of the father (F=3.62, p= .032), economic status (F=5.90, p= .003), and school performance (F=5.94, p= .003) with respect to selfeare agenecy. 4. There were significant differences in dwelling place (t=3.18, p= .025), economic status (F=4.55, p= .012), school performance (F=6.72, p= .002) and health problems (t= 5.41, p= .021) with respect to mental health. 5. The relationship between self care agency and mental health revealed a significant correlation (r=- .24, p= .005). The results showed that a low level of self care agency has an effect on mental health. We need an effective health education program to promote mental health.

Mediating Effect of Social Support on the Relation between the Stress and Mental Health of Female College Students (여대생의 스트레스와 정신건강과의 관계에서 사회적 지지의 매개효과 -일부 전문대학 여대생을 중심으로-)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the mediated effect of social support in relationship of stress and mental health of woman college students. Methods: Data were collected by distributing self recording type questionnaire to 336 woman students in three universities placed in Gyeonggi-do, who agreed attending to the research, and then were re-collected. The statistical methods used for data analysis were the descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, One-way ANOVA test, Pearson correlation coefficient, hierarchial regression analysis. Results: 1. According to the research, it appeared that social support differed depending on the grade the one is in(F=10.643, p<0.05), and mental health(F=3.446, p<0.05) and social support(F=2.444, p<0.05) differed depending on the family's economical level. 2. As the result of analysis of relationship of objects' mental health, stress, and social support, it appeared that mental health and stress(r=-0.605, p<0.01), mental health and social support(r=0.276, p<0.01) have relationship to each other. 3. As the result of hierarchial regression analysis for verifying the mediated effect of social support in relationship of research objects' stress and mental health, it showed that social support partially mediate in relationship of stress and mental health. Conclusion: The program which can intensify woman college students' social support and decrease stress needs to be developed and provided, in order to arrange solution of promoting woman students' mental health.

A Study of Effects of Sallimyok(Forest Therapy)-based Mental Health Program on the Depression the Psychological Stability (산림욕을 활용한 정신건강 프로그램이 우울증해소와 심리적 안녕감에 미치는 효과)

  • Objectives: This study aims to develop a decent sallimyok program and provide basic data which are helpful in improving psychological wellbeing for adults who are exposed to stress and fatigue. Methods: Middle-aged women living in Cheongju, Chungbuk were divided into experimental and control groups (10 people each) through convenience sampling, and a questionnaire survey on psychological wellbeing was distributed to them and collected. For data analysis, IBM/SPSS 20.0 was used. In terms of statistical analysis, a reliability test (Cronbach's ${\alpha}$) was conducted. To test research questions 1 and 2, independent t-test and paired sample t-test were carried out. Results: First, a sallimyok program features meditation (floor-sitting, slow walk), forest therapy, stretching exercise, wrapping-up and sharing feelings. Second, it was confirmed that a sallimyok program has a positive effect on the improvement of psychological wellbeing and the depression for women. Conclusions: The sallimyok program improved participants' psychological wellbeing, which means that it could reduce their anxiety and stress.
