  • This study examined the illustrations in the elementary school textbooks which was followed by identifying the parts that displayed gender-discriminating elements or traditional gender roles. The research results are as follows: 1) The ratio of man and woman in the figures appearing in those illustrations was 1.33:1, which means there were more men than women in the illustrations and that there was no balance in the gender distribution among the figures. 2) Male figures were presented as the protagonists in 39.7% of the illustrations, female figures in 25.5%, and both male and female figures in 34.8%. The results indicate that there were much more illustrations in which men were the protagonists than those in which women were. 3) The occupations of the adults in the illustrations were analyzed. As a result, the ratio of man and woman with a job was about 2:1, which implies that there were twice as many male professionals than female ones. Men had over 60 kinds of occupations and women had only 45 kinds of occupations with 59.5% of them concentrated in four jobs including teaching, farming and fishing, doing artistic works, and selling things. 4) The case analysis results of the illustrations in the textbooks demonstrate that the traditional gender roles of a father and mother were followed and that there were gender stereotypes in describing the characteristics of man and woman. Gender dichotomy was observed in the vocations. Men were the leading players in economic, political, and cultural activities, and most of the historical figures were men. Meanwhile, women were depicted as the subjects of economic activities and completely isolated and alienated from political, historical, and cultural activities. It turned out that the figures of the illustrations in the current elementary school textbooks had gender discriminating elements and profoundly reflected the stereotypes for gender roles.

  • This paper is, first of all, to explore what kinds of character are implied in Korean policies and support programme for foreign immigrants, secondly to analyze immigrants' recognition on them in terms of their types and dwelling places, and finally to suggest some measures to improve policies and support programme. Policies for foreign immigrants are often classified into three models of assimilation, of differential exclusion, and of multiculturalism, but the marginalization of foreign immigrants is suggested either as a new model or as implied in all of those models. As a result of questionary survey, it is found out that foreign immigrants, irrelevant to their type, recognize their policies as mixing those characters. Finally, multiculturalism with distributive equality and recognition justice to overcome marginationalization, network governance for foreign immigrant policies to reflect their needs and participation, and sustainable and multicultural programmes for improving regional identity, ensuring covil rights, supporting comprehensive welfare, and multicultural education are suggested as measures to improve foreign immigrants' quality of life.

  • This research had investigated the teaching practice in the mathematics classrooms with immigrant students to describe how effectively mathematics teachers create inclusive learning environment of mathematics. The analysis of the data from the elementary schools suggests that teaching practice in the class was consistent to the criteria for 'contextualization of students' lived experience' and 'mathematical conversation'. However, while the quantitative results suggested that the teachers showed high expectation to their students in their teaching, the qualitative analysis revealed the teacher's beliefs and attitudes against providing equitable educational opportunity for every student. In the middle school classrooms, it was found that the teaching practices were not compatible to the goals of multicultural mathematics education. The analysis of the survey data regarding teachers' multicultural competence suggests that the teachers possessed rather advan]ced understanding of multicultural mathematics education but they need materials and pedagogy for classroom teaching from multicultural perspectives.

  • Present study examines the gender disparity in terms of its beneficiaries or benefit amount of National Pension of South Korea from the perspective of gender sensitivity. National Pension system has been manipulated and developed in order to maximize its universality. However, substantial gender differences are still found in terms of beneficiary number and benefit amount in the program. Benefit condition and benefit structure are determined assuming that male is the primary breadwinner in household and the primary regular full time worker in labor market. Women are only counted as dependents or excluded as unstable workers. As a result, women are fully or partially excluded from the program as they are excluded in other public sector such as labor market. Women's work (such as caring and housekeeping) are not taken into account in National Pension program. Policy suggestions for the National Pension of South Korea are also provided as the last part of this paper.
