  • Material properties of the lock plate, which covers the gas-turbine blade, are studied using ultrasonic guided waves. The lock plate is a crucial part of a gas-turbine power plant. The wave velocity and attenuation coefficient are measured to investigate the changes in the material properties under three heat-treatment conditions. Compared to the destructive mechanical tests, the material characterization of Inconel X-750 can be performed more efficiently and nondestructively by using ultrasonic guided waves; this characterization helps identify the changes occurring in its elastic moduli and Poisson's ratio under different heat-treatment conditions. The wave velocity and hardness of Inconel X-750 are proportional to each other. This nondestructive technique for the measurement of material properties can be widely used in various industries to avoid catastrophic failure. It is also expected that the guided-wave technique can be applied as a new cost- and time-saving inspection tool for longer and wider inspection ranges.

  • In this study, we have developed a program which can calculate phase and group velocities, attenuation and wave structures of each mode in multi-layered plates. The wave structures of each mode are obtained, varying material properties and number of layers. The key in the success of guided wave NDE is how to optimize the mode selection scheme by minimizing energy loss when a structure is in contact with liquid. In this study, the normalized out-of-plane displacements at the surface of a free plate are used to predict the variation of modal attenuation and verily the correlation between attenuation and wave structure. It turns out that the guided wave attenuation can be efficiently obtain from the out-of-plane displacement variation of a free wave guide alleviating such mathematical difficulties in extracting complex roots for the eigenvalue problem of a liquid loaded wave guide. Through this study, the concert to optimize guided wave mode selection is accomplished to enhance sensitivity and efficiency in nondestructive evaluation for multi-layered structures.

  • This paper presented analysis methods for adapting E-glass fiber/epoxy composite (GFRP) materials to an automotive leaf spring. It focused on the static behaviors of the leaf spring due to the material composition and its fiber orientation. The material properties of the GFRP composite were directly measured based on the ASTM standard test. A reverse implementation was performed to obtain the complete set of in-situ fiber and matrix properties from the ply test results. Next, the spring rates of the composite leaf spring were examined according to the variation of material parameters such as the fiber angles and resin contents of the composite material. Finally, progressive failure analysis was conducted to identify the initial failure load by means of an elastic stress analysis and specific damage criteria. As a result, it was found that damage first occurred along the edge of the leaf spring owing to the shear stresses.

  • The fatigue behavior of GFRP composites is affected by environmental parameters. Therefore, we have to study on effect of sea water on fatigue behavior of GFRP composites as to maintain the safety and confidence in design of ocean structure of GFRP. In this paper, we investigated the fatigue properties of chopped strand glass mat/polyester composite in synthetic sea water. (pH 8.2) In case of the glass fiber (CSM type) reinforced polyester composite materials, the fatigue crack in the both dry and wet specimens tested in air or synthetic sea water occurred at the initial of cycle. Thereafter, it was divided with two regions that one decreased with the crack extension and the other increased with the crack extension. The transition point occurred during the crack propagation shifted to high ${\Delta}K$ value as load increase but its point is not changed regardless of immersion or test environment under a constant load. The synthetic sea water degrades the bond strength between fiber and matrix, thereby the tendency of rapid deceleration and acceleration of the crack growth was appeared.

  • The interlaminar facture behavior of multidirectional carbon-fiber/epoxy composite laminates under low and high rates of test, up to rate of about 11.4m/s has been investigated using the double cantilever beam specimens. The mode I loasing with rates above 1.0m/s had considerable dynamic effects on the load-time curves and thus revealed higher values of the average crack velocity than thet expected from a simple proportional relationship with the test rate. The modified beam analysis utilizing only the opening displacement and crack length exhibited an effective means for evaluating the dynamic fracture energy $G_{IC}$. Flexural modulus increased gradually with an increase of the test rate, which was utilized in the evaluation of $G_{IC}$. Values of $G_{IC}$ at the crack initiation and arrest were scarcely changed with increasing test rate up to 1.0m/s. However the maximum $G_{IC}$ was much enlarged at 11.4m/s due to the large amount of fiber bridging the crack tip. The larger the initial crack length, the smaller the maximum $G_{IC}$ at high rate.

  • Pultruded fiber reinforced polymeric plastic (PFRP) structural members may be one of attractive alternatives of the structural members in the civil engineering applications because of its many advantageous mechanical properties. However, they have relatively low modulus of elasticity and also cross-sections of structural shapes are composed of thin plate components such as flange and web. Therefore, structural stability is an important issue in the design of pultruded structural compression members. For the design of pultruded structural member under compression, buckling and post-buckling strengths of plate components may be taken into account. In the structural steel design following AISC/LRFD, in addition to the buckling strength, the nonuniform stress distribution in the section is incorporated with a form factor. In this paper, the form factor for the design of PFRP structural member under compression is investigated through the analytical study. Furthermore, the process for the determination of the form factor is suggested.

  • Recently, as the size of buildings structure becomes large increases, their mat area of building structure is supported or by an inhomogeneous foundation. This paper presents a vibration analysis on thick plates subjected to in-plane force is presented in this paper. The rectangular plate is isotropic, homogeneous, and composed of a linearly elastic material. A vibration analysis of the rectangular thick plate iwas done by useing ofarectangular finite element with 8 nodes and 9 nodes. In this study, the foundation was idealized as a Pasternak foundation model. A Pasternak foundation haves a shear layer on Winkler's model, which idealizes the foundation as a vertical spring. In order tTo analysze the vibration of a plate supported on by an inhomogeneous Pasternak foundation, the value of the Winkler foundation parameter of the central and border zones of the plate awere chosen as WFP1 and WFP2. (fFigure 4.). The Winkler foundation parameter of WFP1 and WFP2 is varied from 0 to 10, $10^2$, and $10^3$ and the shear foundation parameters is were 0, 5, and 10. The ratio of the in-plane force to the critical load iwas applied as 0.4 to 0.8

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental study to evaluate the redundancy in two plate-girder bridges, which are generally classified as non-redundant load path structures. The study was performed at a time when one of the two girders was damaged. The bottom lateral bracing was considered the experimental variable, and two 1/5-scale bridge specimens of simple span with and without a lateral bracing system were fabricated. Loading tests were first performed on the intact specimens without a cracked girder, within an elastic range. Thereafter, the ultimate loading tests were conducted on the damaged specimens with an induced crack at the center of a girder. The test results showed that the cross beams and the concrete deck redistributed some of the load to the uncracked girder, but the lateral bracing system played an important role in improving the redundancy during the damage and was also effective for load redistribution even when the bridge was intact.

  • This paper is concerned with mechanical properties of unidirectional laminate $[(0^{\circ})_{8T},\;(90^{\circ})_{8T}]$, composed of angle plies $[({\pm}15^{\circ})_{2S},\;({\pm}30^{\circ})_{2S},\;({\pm}45^{\circ})_{2S},\;({\pm}60^{\circ})_{2S},\;({\pm}75^{\circ})_{2S}$ and laminate $[(9^{\circ}/90^{\circ})_{2S},\;(90^{\circ}/{\pm}45^{\circ}/0^{\circ})_S,\;({\pm}45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/{\pm}90^{\circ})_S,\;({\pm}45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/0^{\circ})_S,\;(0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/{\pm}45^{\circ})_S,\;(90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/{\pm}45^{\circ})_S]$ under the condition of uniform strain tension. Also, experimental investigation was conducted $[10]_{8T}$, off-axis tensile test for intralaminar shear characterization. The experimental data on the failure criterion of tensor polynomial were compared with those from the classical laminate theory. Acoustic Emission experiments have been carried out to investigate the changes of the amplitude distributions of Acoustic Emission monitored during failure of tensile tests on Carbon/Epoxy composites.

  • In this study, rheological properties and flow dynamics in roll coating process of basecoat paints have been investigated for automotive precoated metal (PCM) sheet applications. Various rheological properties for basecoats with three colors (black, blue, and silver), such as shear viscosity data at room temperature and elastic/viscous moduli under thermal curing condition, have been measured using a rotational rheometer. It is found that the relative portion of function groups inside basecoats and their viscosity level have greatly affected the formation of crosslinked networks by thermal curing. Also, operability coating windows for basecoats have been established in three-roll coating process system by observing their flow instabilities such as ribbing and cascade. It is confirmed that rheological approaches applied in this study have been usefully applied to develop environmentally-friendly PCM coating technology and optimally control the coating operations for non-Newtonian PCM paints.
