  • This study aims to describe, explain, and understand the process of coteaching instruction in which two pre-service science teachers plan, perform, and reflect the instruction in a university lecture. Pre-service science teachers exchanged their perspectives on teaching, selected the learning model and the science content to teach, and prepared the teaching material together. They performed the coteaching using the lecture room effectively and exchanging the role of leading the instruction. The professor and other pre-service science teachers participated to the coteaching instruction directly or indirectly with the role of students or lesson critics, and shared the evaluation and reflection on the instruction. We discussed the meaning and implication of the coteaching instruction on the secondary education field, the science teacher education, and the science education.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of coteaching science instruction in elementary science-gifted education upon students' concept application ability and their perception of the instruction. Fifth graders (N=37) from two science-gifted classes in two elementary schools were selected and assigned to control (n=19) and coteaching instruction (CI, n=18) groups. Two teachers prepared, executed, and evaluated together the instructions for science-gifted elementary students during twelve classes in the CI group, and so did one teacher with the same programs in the control group. After the instructions, the students in the two groups were administered with a test of concept application ability. All students in the CI group were also administered with a questionnaire on the perception of the instruction and were deeply interviewed. The results revealed that the scores of those in the CI group were significantly higher than those in the control group in the test on concept application ability. Many students in the CI group perceived the coteaching science instruction positively upon verbal interaction, class management, and cognitive/affective aspects. However, some of them also pointed a few disadvantages of the instruction. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to apply the coteaching to the teaching practice of the student-teachers and identify the distinctive characteristics of the communication processes appeared in coteaching. We developed the semiotic analyzing-frame and observed 7 classes of middle schools where the student-teachers cotaught one or two units. Then we analyzed the communication processes on the view of semiotics. We found three patterns of the communication processes. First, when there was a discontinuous communication between the student-teacher and the students, the communication was restarted by the other student-teacher leading to the complete meaning making. Second, when an insufficient communication took place by the student-teacher using inadequate interpretant, the other student-teacher modified the communication by selecting another interpretant including sufficient meaning towards the object. With this new interpretant, students could refine the imperfect private meanings and eventually establish the more objective meanings. Third, the communication was pre-planned between coteachers to help students understand the contents through the successful translation of interpretants. Coteaching provided positive implications to improve the communication processes in science lesson.

  • As a case study on the use of coteaching in science instruction for science-gifted elementary students, this paper analyzed the characteristics of coteaching science instruction for science-gifted elementary students by plan, performance, and reflection-evaluation stages of the classes. To do this, we observed two teachers' coteaching science instruction for science-gifted elementary students during twelve classes and analyzed the taped videos, their journals, and the transcripts for in-depth interviews with them. The results indicated that the characteristics of the coteaching science instruction, in the planning stage of the classes, showed improvement in the quality of the sciencegifted education programs, the reduction of the psychological burdens of developing the programs, and some efficiency loss due to the joint preparation of the classes. The characteristics in the performance stage of the classes include the seamless progression of the classes through the division of roles, the increase of the students' opportunity to explore, the supplement of the teachers' inadequate descriptions and the overlooked contents, the increase of the interaction between teachers and students and/or the interaction among students, the reduction of the risk of accidents in experiments, and the reduction of the responsibility for teaching. Finally, the characteristics in the reflectionevaluation stage of the classes could be attributed to the diversity of the evaluation viewpoints, the increase of the learning opportunities to develop the teaching professionalism, and the increase of the fear for assessing my own classes.

  • As a case study on the changes of beginning science-gifted education teachers' teaching professionalism through coteaching, this study deeply investigated the change processes in the aspects of pedagogical content knowledge. We selected two beginning teachers whose teaching careers in secondary science-gifted education were less than five years. The teachers planned, performed, and reflected together their science instructions for secondary science-gifted students during nine class hours over three times. We observed coteaching of science instructions of the teachers, and analyzed the taped videos, the materials, the transcripts for discussions between them and in-depth interviews with them, their reflective journals, and researcher's field notes by using the constant comparative method. This study revealed that the coteaching positively changed the two teachers' practical knowledge about the curriculum for science-gifted education, the instructional strategies for science-gifted education, the assessment in science-gifted education, the science-gifted students, and the science contents although there were some limitations. The results suggest that the coteaching will be useful in improving beginning teachers' teaching professionalism, and provide practical implications in finding the ways to use it effectively in science-gifted education.

  • In this case study, we investigated the characteristics of secondary beginning science-gifted education teachers' reflection on their science teaching with coteaching through mentoring. We selected two beginning teachers with less than one year teaching careers in secondary science-gifted education. The teachers planned, performed, and reflected together on their science teaching for science-gifted students during twelve class hours over four times. Since the second class, pre-, during-, and post-mentorings were conducted. We observed their science classes with coteaching through mentoring, and analyzed their reflective journals in the views of productive reflection. The analyses of the results revealed that 'instructional strategies and instruction for science-gifted education' and 'science-gifted students' were most frequently included in their reflection regardless of class time. 'Curriculum for science-gifted education' were also frequently included although fewer than the two aspects. However, 'subject matter knowledge' and 'assessment in science-gifted education' were hardly included. Two to four aspects of the five were variously integrated in their reflection. The integrations among three to four aspects were especially more frequently included than those between two aspects. The integrations of 'instructional strategies and instruction for science-gifted education' or 'science-gifted students' with the other aspects were also found to be the most frequent. These results suggest that coteaching through mentoring can promote beginning science-gifted education teachers' productive reflection on their science teaching.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a nursing clinical practice education model that applies case-based learning and co-teaching to nursing students, and to secure the validity of the developed model. To verify the validity of the nursing clinical practice education model, it was applied to the subject of 'Health Response and Nursing VI (Perception/ Cognition) Practice' in the 2nd semester of 2021 at J University in Jeonju, and the instructor's response to the model was evaluated. Surveys and focus group interviews were conducted on confidence in clinical practice and teaching and learning models. After deriving the case-based learning stage and co-teaching elements through a review of precedent literature and case studies, an initial model was devised after expert review, and the devised model was reviewed for internal validity by nursing education experts, and then modified and supplemented. As a result of the learner response evaluation conducted after applying the model to the clinical practice subject for external validation verification, the confidence in clinical performance was 4.22 points and the satisfaction with the teaching-learning model was 4.68 points. Summarizing the results of the focus group interview, the importance of prior learning and the learning of selected cases based on actual cases, learning terminology and professional knowledge, eliminated fear of the practice field, felt familiar, and learned various cases. He said that he was able to think critically through the time to organize the knowledge learned in the practice field. In addition, through co-teaching, it was found that field leaders and advisors taught the theoretical and practical aspects at the same time through examples, thereby experiencing practical education closer to practice. It is expected that the nursing clinical practice education model developed through this study, applying case-based learning and co-teaching, will be an effective teaching and learning model that can reduce the gap between theory and practice and improve the clinical performance of nursing students.

  • In order to explore the influences of coteaching through mentoring upon the teaching professionalism of beginning science-gifted education teachers, this case study deeply investigated the change processes in the aspects of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). Two beginning teachers planned, performed and reflected together their science instructions for science-gifted students in secondary school during four 3-hour classes. Since the second instruction, pre-, during-, and post-mentoring were conducted, we collected various data related to teachers' planning processes, videotaped all coteaching science classes, and wrote field notes. We also recorded in-depth interviews with the teachers and the whole process of mentoring. All the data were analyzed by using the constant comparative method. The results of the analyses indicated that coteaching through mentoring positively changed the teachers' PCK. Above all, we found that coteaching and mentoring strategies generated a significant synergy effect through a mutually complementary relationship. The teachers developed deep practical knowledge about the enrichment curriculum, which placed more emphasis on developing cognitive and/or affective characteristics of science-gifted students. The teachers also improved their knowledge about the characteristics of science-gifted students and the instructional strategies appropriate for developing them. Moreover, practical knowledge about assessment domains and methods used in science-gifted education were improved. Knowledge on science content necessary for effective inquiry instruction was also improved.
