  • This study was carried out to assay the disease incidence degree of Sclerotium rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii in sixteen most popular commercial cultivars of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) in Republic of Korea. The degree of disease incidence was evaluated on pot experiments. In pot experiments using artificial inoculation, the Sclerotium rolfsii caused a stem rot on seedling of sweet potato plants and causes a crown rot on lower stems near or at the soil line at favorable environmental conditions. White mycelial mats and sclerotia were formed at the infection sites. Plants severely infected were fell over or died because lower stems near soil surface were rotten. The degree of disease incidence was varied according to cultivars. Two cultivars, Bio-mi and Deayumi, were very resistant, while five cultivars, Shinjami, Shingeonmi, Hongmi, Yeonjami, and Shinhung-3 were highly susceptible.

  • Standing up from a supine and prone position is very important for physical independence. All kinds of patients have a bed rest or lying on floor without special care. Even though the patient had complete from illness. He must train the functional activities before discharge. There are many method for the functional activity training. Likewise, sing of reflex, voluntary movement for muscle strength increasing, but clinically ideal method is approaching with motor developmental stage. Supine and prone progression of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation have a ideal reason. That is reflex integratation, development of muscle tone, develop of motor control, dynamic and static, motor behavior and cognition.

  • A coercivity of barium ferrite (BaM) tape was found to be higher than the coercivity of BaM powder, This difference is in the range of 50 Oe to 600 Oe, which depends on substituted cations. physical properties of powder, and preparation conditions of the tape. The coercivity difference is attributed to both particle stacking and adsorption of organic solvent on particle surface. Regardless of substituted cations, the coercivity of longitudinally oriented BaFe tape was higher than that of BaM powder by a range of 100 Oe to 120 Oe, which is caused by particle stacking' During the active adsorption process on preparation of magnetic paint, where MEK (methyl ethyl ketone), TOL (toluene) and CHO (cyclohexanone) were used, chemisorption of solvents on the surface of substituted BaFe particle occurred to form polymeric compounds surrounding the particle. An increase in coercivity, caused by the solvent adsorption, was significant for Co-substutited BaM tape. Among these solvents CHO was the most effective one in increasing the coercivity of the Co-Ti substituted BaM tape.

  • This research was to develop the cycling system of lower limbs for rehabilitation during cycle exercise in supine position. Also we analyzed the muscular activity of lower-limbs at various exercise conditions according to exercise mode, load, velocity. 42 healthy subjects(ages 20-60 years) were participated. We measured the muscular activities of right lower limb muscle in rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, medial gastrocnemius, soleus. Results, medial gastrocnemius shows high value on load 10 stage than load 1 and 5 stage. And all muscular activity except medial gastrocnemius was decreased as increase of velocity. We have found that there is a difference of lower limbs activity depending on exercise mode and method. This study could be applied to reference data to develop cycle system of lower limbs for rehabilitation.

  • A destructive stem rot of pepper (Capsicum annuum) was found from the often field sporadically in Jingyemyon, Hadong-gun in July 2002 and vinyl houses in Moonsan-eup, Jinju City in October 2003. The same fungus also caused collar and crown rot and systemic wilt or blight of whole plant. White mycelium spread over stems of infected plants and sclerotia formed on the old lesions and near the soil surface. The fungus showed maximum mycelial growth around 3$0^{\circ}C$. The mycelial color is white and width of hyphae ranges 3.6∼10.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and formed clamp connection. Numerous sclerotia were farmed in artificial media such as PDA at 3$0^{\circ}C$. The shape of sclerotia were sphere and 1.0∼2.1 mm in diameter, The fungus was isolated repeatedly from the infected tissues and the pathogenecity of fungus to pepper (Capsicum annuum) was confirmed, and identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. This is the first report on the stem rot of pepper (Capsicum annuum) caused by Sclerotium rolfsii in Korea.

  • In April of 2003, the gray mold disease occurred severely on statice (Limonium shinuatum Mill. cv. Sophia) grown in the commerical farms in Seosang-myon, Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, Korea, 2003. The infected plants were started with water-soaking lesions in the stems, the leaves and the flowers became withered and discolored to gray or dark from the tip then gradually expanded to die. The conidia and mycelia of the pathogen appeared on flowers, leaves, calyx and flower stalk. The conidia were gray, I-celled, mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape and were 8∼20 x 6∼14 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. Conidiophores were 14∼34 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. The sclerotia were formed abundantly on potato-dextrose agar. The optimum temperature for sclerotial formation was 2$0^{\circ}C$. Pathogenicity of the causal organism was proved according to Koch's postulate. The causal organism was identified as Botrytis cinerea Persoon: Fries based on mycological characteristics. This is the first report on gray mold of statice (Limonium shinuatum) caused by Botrytis cinerea in Korea.

  • An epidemic of target leaf spot of cucumber (Cucumis sativus) occurred in commercial greenhouses in Korea in 2000/2001. The early symptoms on the leaves were small brown spots with yellow halos. These lesions became irregular enlarging in diameter and eventually defoliation resulted. The causal agent was a fungus with morphological characteristics matching Corynespora cassiicola. The sequence of the ITS region of C. cassiicola CM2000-1 was identical to that of an authentic strain of Corynespora cassiicola. Optimal germination of spores and mycelial growth on plate was at 3$0^{\circ}C$. A long dew period on the leaf surface and high temperatures were the main contributing factors for disease development and the greenhouse epidemic. Artificial inoculation of the Korean isolate of C. cassiicola revealed resistance in some Korean cucumber cultivars.

  • Since 2004, a gray mold on Aerides japonicum Lindenb. & Reichb. caused by Botrytis cinerea occurred in a few greenhouses at Goseong and Tongyeong, Gyeongnam, Korea. The disease mainly started on the basal part of leaves, and often lead to severe rots of whole plant. Abundant grayish mycelia and conidial mats were visible on the lesions under a humid conditions. The light gray conidia were one celled and mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape. The conidia were $6{\sim}21{\times}4{\sim}13{\mu}m$ in size and conidiophores were $15{\sim}34{\mu}m$ in length. The fungus formed abundant sclerotia on potato-dextrose agar after 18 days incubation at $20^{\circ}C$. The fungus was identified as Botrytis cinerea Persoon: Fries. based on its pathogenicity and mycological characteristics examined in this study. This is the first report of gray mold of Aerides japonicum caused by B. cinerea in Korea.

  • The symptom of anthracnose of chinese matrimony vine (Lycium chinense Mill) was darkbrown to black, watersoaked lesions with acervuli on fruits. Field survey revealed that the incidence rate of anthracnose ranged from $0.8\%\;to\;23\%$. to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz and C. dematium(Fr.) Grove were identified as the causal organisms of the disease. C. gloeosporioides and C. dematium produced severe symptoms on fruits resulting in complete necrosis, but produced no or mild symptoms on leaves and stems of chinese matrimony vine. Of three isolates of C. dematium, isolate I and isolate III caused severe infection on immature fruits and isolate I was the most pathogenic on mature fruits of the plant. Isolates II of C. dematium caused relatively severe lesions on pepper fruit, but C. gloeosporioides was pathogenic on apple fruit.

  • The fruit rot of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) occurred sporadically in the farmers field at Chojeondong, Jinju city, Korea, in 2007. The typical symptom was water-soaked, brown on the fruit, and than infected fruits were mostly rotted. White mycelial mats were spread over lesions, and then sclerotia were formed on fruit and near soil line. The sclerotia were globoid in shape, $1{\sim}3\;mm$ in size and white to brown in color. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation on PDA was $30^{\circ}C$ and the hyphal width was $4{\sim}8{\mu}m$. The typical clamp connections were observed in the hyphae of the fungus. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to host plants, this fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. This is the first report on the fruit rot of watermelon by S. rolfsii in Korea.
