  • This experiment was carried out to select the optimum forage cropping system at the Dae-Ho reclaimed tideland, Korea from March, 2004 to October, 2006. Emergency rate of summer crop such as sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass was low ($23%{\sim}30%$). Winter crop such as Italian ryegrass after continually cultivating wholecrop rice were highest (91%). Wintering rate of Italian ryegrass after continually cultivating wholecrop rice was highest and lowest in wholecrop barley after continually cultivating sorghum${\times}$sudanuass. In cropping system, fresh and dry matter yield of annually wholecrop rice+Italian ryegrass (50,807kg, 15,065kg) were highest and lowest in annaually serghum${\times}$sudangrass+wholecrop barley (17,2471kg, 5,209kg), respectively.

  • We investigated the nutritive value and ruminal in situ dry matter degradability of whole crop rice silage prepared using Chucheongbyeo (WCRS) as a roughage source for ruminants. The crude protein (7.54%), acid detergent fiber (29.63%), neutral detergent fiber (62.98%), and total digestible nutrient (TDN) (57.88%) found higher in WCRS than those of rice straw. Manganese content in the WCRS was the highest, followed by carbon, iron, zinc, and copper, but magnesium content was the lowest. Glutamic acid content in WCRS was the highest, followed by leucine, asparagine, alanine, valine, arginine, and methionine content was the lowest. We examined ruminal in situ digestibility from total whole crop rice (TWCR), rice husks containing rice (RHR), whole crop rice except RHR (WER), and husked grain (HG) for 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours. Ruminal in situ digestibility in the HG was the highest, followed by RHR, TWCR, and WER. Therefore, we suggest that ruminal in situ degradability was influenced by parts of whole crop rice, and the content of manganese and glutamic acid were the highest in WCRS.

  • This experiment was conducted to study the effects of growth stage and variety on the quality of whole crop rice(WCR) silage at National Institute of Animal Science, RDA from 2004 to 2005. Two types of rice("Chucheong" for food and "Hamasari" for whole crop) were harvested at six different growth stages (heading, flowering, milk, dough, yellow ripen and fully ripen stage) and ensiled each harvest stages. Crude protein(CP) content of all whole crop rice silage was also decreased with progressed maturity at harvest and TDN(total digestible nutrient) content of WCR was increased. The average CP content of whole crop rice was higher than that of food rice. The contents of ADF(acid detergent fiber) and NDF(neutral detergent fiber) decreased with delayed harvest maturity. The content of TDN estimated from ADF content was increased with progressed maturity, but there was not found significant difference between rice varieties(p<0.05). The average pH value was 4.69 and it was increased with delayed harvest maturity. Acetic and butyric acid content were decreased, but lactic acid content was increased with progressed maturity. The experiments presented here show that all rice varieties may give a good quality silage. But some wrong practical method(grain loss, productivity, nutrient value, etc.) will make poor quality of rice silage. Therefore, dough stage of harvest maturity will be recommendable as proper harvest time for making high quality of whole crop rice silage in Korea.

  • This study was performed to investigate the nutritive values of white panicled rice (Oryza sativa L., WPR) silage manufactured with WPR grown in reclaimed paddy field of Bigumdo of Korea in 2011. The WPR used in this study were collected in 1,000 ha of reclaimed paddy field of Bigumdo and was harvested at dough stage and ensiled. The yield of whole crop rice (WCR) grown in region received the most severe damage (MSD) was lower as about 800 kg/ha as than that in region of normal growth (NG). The content of crude protein and total digestible nutrient in WCR of MSD slightly increased, as compared to that in WCR of NG, but the contents of acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber significantly decreased (p<0.05). The pH in WCR silage of MSD and NG ranged from 4.5 to 5.0 and pH decreased by the inoculation of lactic bacteria (p<0.05). The content of lactic acid in WCR silage of MSD and NG increased by the inoculation of lactic bacteria (p<0.05), but the content of acetic acid and butyric acid decreased (p<0.05). Flieg's score in WCR silage of MSD and NG inoculated lactic bacteria increased from 2 to 3 grade, as comparing to non-inoculation of lactic bacteria. Therefore, this study suggests that WPR can be utilized as forage.

  • Four ruminally cannulated Hanwoo steers (BW 600 ${\pm}$ 48.4 kg) fed whole crop rice silage (WRS) as forage were used to investigate the effects of its dietary on rumen fermentation and blood metabolites at different harvesting time such as milk, dough, yellow ripe and mature stages of WRS, respectively. Mean ruminal pH sampled at 0, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after the morning feeding was not significantly (p>0.05) different between the WRS by the harvesting time. In diurnal pattern in ruminal pH, the lowest pH for the mature stage treatment (Mature) appeared at 6 h after the feeding while it appeared at 2-4 h for the other treatments. This may indicate that retention time in the rumen of Hanwoo fed WRS harvested at the Mature increased. Although feeding WRS harvested at different stages did not significantly (p>0.05) affect ruminal ammonia N concentration, the ammonia N for WRS harvested at the milk stage (Milk) tended (p=0.11) to decrease compared with that for the yellow stage treatment (Yellow). In the blood metabolites analysis, BUN concentration for Yellow numerically decreased compared with that for Milk. This, taking lower concentration of ruminal ammonia N for Milk than the other treatments into account, clearly indicates that the BUN concentrations may not increase in proportion to ruminal ammonia N concentration according to ammonia N concentration entering into the lower gastric tracts. Lower (p=0.03) concentration of blood albumin for the dough stage treatment than that for Mature may indicate high protein synthesis in Hanwoo fed WRS at the dough stage, but further studies in terms of mechanism of nutrients distribution should be required. Present results indicate that different harvesting time did not affect rumen fermentation and blood metabolites in Hanwoo. Thus, based on the results of the present and the previous studies, utilizing WRS harvested at yellow stage could be recommendable for Hanwoo steers.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of forage cropping system and cattle slurry on productivity of whole crop rice, whole crop barley and Sorghum-Sudangrass hybrid and environmental pollution in paddy land. Forage cropping system used in this study was consisted of double-cropping whole crop barley followed by whole crop rice applied with cattle slurry (DWBRC) and double-cropping whole crop barley followed by Sorghum-Sudangrass hybrid applied with cattle slurry (DSSBC). The field experiments were conducted on the clay loam at Backsanmyun, Kimje, Chunlabukdo province in Korea for three years (May 2006 to Apr. 2009). This study was arranged in completely randomized design with three replicates. The field had been sown with whole crop rice 'Nampyung', Sorghum-Sudangrass hybrid 'Sordan79' and whole crop barley 'Younyang'. The yields of whole crop barley in DWBRC and DSSBC were 7,515 kg/ha and 8,515 kg/ha, respectively. The yields of whole crop barley in DSSBC significantly increased as compared with that of DWBRC (p<0.05). The contents of crude protein, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), total digestible nutrient (TDN) of whole crop barley in DWBRC were not difference as compared with those of DSSBC. The pH, and contents of total nitrogen and organic matter in soil samples collected at the end of the experiment increased as compared with those at the beginning of the experiment (p<0.05). However, The content of phosphate in DWBRC was no difference as compared with DSSBC. In addition, after the end of experiment, the concentrations of exchangeable cations (Ca, Na, Mg and K) in soil samples collected at the end of the experiment were remarkably higher than those at the beginning of the experiment (p<0.05). The concentrations of $NH_4$-N, $NO_3$-N, $PO_4$-P, Cl, Ca, K, Mg and Na in leaching water were hardly influenced by the cropping system and application of cattle slurry.

  • Three Hanwoo steers (BW $623{\pm}18.5kg$) with ruminal and duodenal cannulae were used to investigate nutrients degradability and total digestible nutrient (TDN) of whole crop rice silage (WRS) harvested at different mature stages using in situ technique. Crude protein content (mean 4.81%) decreased with progressed maturity at harvest except for WRS harvested at yellow stage. Ruminal dry matter degradability of WRS at milk stage tended to be slightly lower than that of the other stages during the entire incubation time from 12 h post-incubation. The rapidly degradable N (a-fraction) of WRS harvested at milk stage was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of WRS at dough stage whereas the slowly degradable N (b-fraction) of WRS harvested at yellow and dough stages were statistically (p<0.05) higher than those of the other WRS. Effective protein degradability (EPD) of WRS harvested at yellow stage was numerically (compared with dough and milk stages) and statistically (compared with mature stage) higher than EPD of the other WRS. Protein digestibility of WRS at different gastric tracts did not differ (p>0.05) between the harvest stages. TDN of WRS harvested at yellow stage in Hanwoo steers was statistically (compared with milk stage) and numerically (compared with dough and mature stages) higher than TDN of the other WRS. Overall, taking present feed evaluation into consideration, WRS harvested at yellow stage may be recommended for Hanwoo steers. Further studies on in vivo rumen fermentation pattern and minimizing nutrients loss during harvest should be required for accurate feed evaluation.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of green manure crops and cattle slurry application on rice productivity and nutrient movement in paddy land. Cropping systems used in this study were consisted of five designs, such as mono-cropping rice applied with standard fertilizer (MRS), double-cropping whole crop barley following rice applied with cattle slurry (DWBRC), double-cropping whole crop rye following rice applied with cattle slurry (DWRRC), mono-cropping rice applied with following milk vetch (MRMV) and mono-cropping rice applied with following hairy vetch (MRHV). The field experiments were conducted on the clay loam at Backsanmyun, Kimje, Chunlabukdo province in Korea for three years (May 2006 to Apr. 2009). This study was arranged in completely randomized design with three replicates. Culm and panicle length of rice were higher in MRS than other treatments. Ripened grain ratio was higher in MRS than other treatments. Yield of Grain showed high in MRS, DWBRC and DWRRC than MRMV and MRHV. The yield of dry matter (DM) of whole crop barley in DWBRC increased significantly as compared with that of rye in DWRRC. The pH, and contents of T-N, $P_2O_5$ and organic matter (OM) and exchangeable cation (Ca, Na, Mg and K) in soil samples collected at the end of the experiment were remarkably higher than those at the beginning of the experiment. The concentrations of $NO_3$-N, $NH_4$-N and $PO_4$ in discharge water in DWBRC and DWRRC were higher than MRS.
