In this study, the perception and demands on the use of realistic content were analyzed through in-depth interviews with elementary school teachers experienced in using realistic content in science classes. Specifically, the following questions were investigated: (1) What kind of realistic content and how do elementary school teachers use it in science classes? (2) What are the perceptions and difficulties of elementary school teachers regarding the use of realistic content in science classes? (3) What are the needs of elementary school teachers related to the professional development program for the use of realistic content in science classes? The study revealed the following results. First, elementary school teachers mainly used digital textbooks and realistic content provided by the "Science Level Up" site, and the content types could be classified into "exploration type," "visit type," and "production type," according to the purpose of use. Second, elementary school teachers mentioned the educational advantages of using realistic content to help students understand scientific content, induce interest and curiosity, and become immersed in a sense of reality. Several difficulties related to the use of realistic content were mentioned. Among them, the lack of high-quality educational content suitable for science classes and a lack of examples of specific class cases that use realistic content stood out. Thirdly, regarding the development of teacher expertise to use realistic content, elementary school teachers emphasized the need for information on quality realistic content; teacher training centered on specific class cases; instructional models that can be applied by realistic content type; and information on the purchase, use, management, and operation of necessary devices. Reflecting on these research results, implications for more effective use of realistic content in elementary science classes were discussed.
Under the assumptions that teachers' beliefs toward mathematics education play a role of a filter between teachers' knowledge and teaching practices, this study surveyed and analyzed elementary teachers' beliefs toward mathematics education: helping students to understand mathematics concepts, addressing students' mathematical misconceptions, engaging students in mathematics classroom, and improving students' mathematical thinking. From the analysis of survey results of the study, I found that there were dominant components in elementary teachers' beliefs system regarding teaching mathematics. In addition, there are some constructs affected by teachers' characteristics such as gender and educational backgrounds. In this study, I presented a representative model of elementary teachers' beliefs system toward mathematics education.

In this study, we investigated the characteristics of elementary school teachers' self-images of science teaching by using Draw-A-Science-Teacher-Test Checklist (DASTT-C). A survey was administered to 178 elementary school teachers in Seoul, Gyeonggi province, and Gangwon Province. It was found that elementary school teachers' self-images of science teaching for four science subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science) were more 'teacher-centered' than 'student-centered'. The results may imply that elementary school teachers' beliefs of science teaching tend to be more traditional than constructive. Therefore, there is a need to develop an effective education system for pre- and in-service elementary school teachers based on constructivism.
This study investigated the perception of science philosophy education targeting 150 elementary school teachers in metropolitan cities and provinces. The questionnaire survey on the perception of the philosophy of science education was composed of a 5-point Likert scale based on the interest and experience of the philosophy of science, the reason for difficulty in using it, and the introduction method, the expected effect. As a result of the survey, elementary school teachers' awareness of the interest and necessity of the philosophy of science was generally high, while the experience of learning and teaching the philosophy of science was low. In addition, to the reason why it was difficult to utilize the philosophy of science, teachers answered that there was insufficient teacher training and development of teaching and learning methods. As a way to introduce the philosophy of science in science education, it was thought that it was necessary to combine the concept learning and inquiry method, and elementary school teachers' perception of the expected effect of using the philosophy of science was generally high. The results of this study are meaningful in that they provide basic data on the direction of the introduction of the philosophy of science in elementary science education.

Mathematics textbooks based on storytelling in elementary schools started to apply a new method of teaching math to the first and second grade students from this year. By surveying the actual responses of both in-service and pre-service teachers, this study aimed to find out critical opinions to assist future math teachers. The survey was conducted among 124 in-service teachers and 112 pre-service teachers, asking what they needed for the understanding of the storytelling theory and for the preparation of actual lessons. After analyzing data, we concluded that in-service teachers have more positive opinion about the efficiency of teaching and learning mathematics based on storytelling, but more negative opinion about the appropriateness of storytelling as a means for teaching and learning mathematics than the pre-service teachers in elementary school. The in-service elementary teachers also want to have well-organized teaching resources for storytelling and development. Through a lot of training, more and more creative ways of applying the storytelling method can be learned and concrete presentations of real lessons need to be shared. Approximately 87% of pre-service teachers believe the storytelling method is a necessity in teaching math.
This study is a case study of an elementary school teacher's reflection and practice in the process of planning, executing and criticizing his lesson on division with decimals. The purpose of this study was to clarify what kinds of problems an elementary school teacher was thinking about and how his focus was changing in the process of planning and executing a lesson and criticizing his lesson with his peers. The teacher was set in three periods: a teacher planning a lesson, a teacher executing a lesson, and a teacher criticizing his or her own lesson. Each period was analyzed in eight aspects: Establishing the goals for mathematics, implementing tasks, connecting mathematical representations, facilitating mathematical discourse, posing questions, building procedural fluency from conceptual understanding, supporting productive struggles, and using evidences of students' thinking.

Despite the recent increased attention to mathematics teacher education there have been lack of empirical studies on how to teach teachers. A study of mathematics instruction for prospective teachers can be conducted either by a teacher educator's critical reflection on her teaching or by observation of others' teaching practices. This paper was from the author's observation of a mathematics instruction course for future elementary teachers at the University of California at Irvine. As such this paper described in detail how the course was implemented throughout the quarter and drew implications for a teacher preparation program in Korea. As the course had a specific purpose of promoting future teachers' expertise in mathematics instruction and employed various strategies that were different from a typical university course, this paper is expected to provide teacher educators with the insight of an alternative teaching style and to provoke discussion of how to connect theory to practice for effective teacher education.

This study was to investigate what pre-service teachers pay attention to when designing science lessons. As a result of analyzing the responses of pre-service teachers, it is analyzed that pre-service teachers are designing science lessons with emphasis on science inquiry, considering students' interest, level, and treatment of misconceptions, and closely related to daily life. In particular, it was found that elementary school pre-service teachers made a lot of comments on science class design that emphasizes experimentation and inquiry, so it was found that emphasizing inquiry was recognized as an important point in science lesson design. It is very positive that pre-service teachers recognize important aspects of science education, such as emphasizing inquiry. In addition, it is suggested that the opportunities for class design and demonstration through collaboration with teachers and colleagues should be increased for pre-service teachers' professional development of teachers.
