Landscape Designs on Blue and White Porcelains in the Late Joseon Period (조선후기 청화백자 산수문양의 전개양상)

  • This paper deals with the cultural and ideoligical background of the landscape designs on Joseon blue and white porcelains in the late Joseon period, and involves the government painters in the official kiln. Dongjeongchuwol-design (동정추월문), painted the full-moon night scene of Dongjeong lake on Jeseon blue and white porcelains, was in fashion in the late Joseon period. It didn't reflected the entirely realistic subject comparing to the painting circles at that time, but the principle and aesthetic appreciation of Royal family who leaded the official kiln. And Sansuinmul-design (산수인물화). painted the man of great caliber in the ancient history with mountain scenery, was similar to the painting manuals such as Gossihwabo (고씨화보) and Dangsihwabo (당시화보). It was a counterpart of Dongjeonchuwol-design on Joseon blue and white porcelains in the late Joseon period. These designs were painted into ogival-shaped frame (릉화창) on the blue and white porcelains in most cases, and adjusted to shape of porcelain. The landscape designs on Joseon blue and white porcelains became stereotyped, involving subjects of folk painting in the late 18th Century and the early 19th Century. This essay will be just a start to research into the landscape designs on blue and white porcelains in the late Joseon period, even though we seldom find works providing strict chronology among some works to the public.

A Research on Buncheong Jar with dragon and cloud patterns(龍樽) in the early the Joseon Dynasty with priority given to Buncheongsagisanggamunryongmunho, National treasures (조선 초기 용준(龍樽), 분청사기 상감 운룡문 호의 특징과 성격)

  • This study investigates the production and use, development of Buncheongsagisang-gamunryongmunho, focusing on Buncheong Jar with dragon and cloud patterns(龍樽) in the early the Joseon Dynasty. The Buncheong Jar with dragon and cloud patterns(龍樽) which is the size of a large bottle as high as 50cm is a form of stability to have gorgeous decorativeness with the inlaid and stamped pattern. The Buncheongsagisanggamunryongmunho is the Buncheong Jar with dragon and cloud patterns(龍樽) used for Flower Vessels(花樽) at Royal Ritual in King Sejong(世宗) era. In the 1420s and 1430s, made in Premium ceramic factory of Sangju-mok, it is Blue and white porcelain in reference to dragon and cloud patterns in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties in aspects of shapes and patterns, to the inlaid Celadon in the period of Late Goryeo Dynasty in aspects of patterns, and to Joseon porcelain in aspects of shapes and decoration techniques. The Joseon Royal family found out the appropriateness of the founding of the dynasty and the base for the system of civilization from Ming dynasty, to follow Ming dynasty by choosing white porcelains as the King's vessel. Jars passed down from Emperor Ming served as a standard for Royal Ritual Jars, to use Blue and White Porcelain Jar with dragon and cloud patterns as Flower Vessels(花樽) and Liquor Vessels(酒樽) for ages. Consequently, the Buncheong Jar with dragon and cloud patterns(龍樽) as Royal Ritual Jar had been used till 1430's when Blue and white porcelain Jar with dragon and cloud patterns(靑花雲龍白磁酒海) was passed down from Emperor Ming, Xuande Emperor(宣德帝), only to lose its Meaning and Use as the Royal Jar with dragon and cloud patterns(龍樽) during the early Joseon Period gradually.

Study of Material Characteristics by a Componential Analysis on the Whiteware from the Kiln of Chiljeon-ri, Bangsan-myeon, Yanggu-gun (양구 방산 칠전리 출토 백자의 성분분석을 통한 원료특성 연구)

  • This study aims to research the relationship between whitewares and their rare materials from the site of Yanggu and Bunwon through the componential characteristic of the excavated whitewares from the 1st and the 2nd kilns of Chiljeon-ri in Bangsan-myeon, Yanggu-gun. As a result, the sherds were devided according to the chemical compositions of the body and the glaze via their respective production era. However, it considered that the whitewares from Chiljeon-ri had been manufactured with geochemically similar materials and the production process, such as refining and combining materials, had been different. It assumed that the firing temperatures of the whitewares from Chiljeon-ri were around $1,100-1,200^{\circ}C$ and substantially lower than for general whitewares. In the componential analysis, there were disparate properties in the cobalt pigment, which contained trace elements and rare earth elements. A review of the literature revealed a correlation between the whitewares from the late Chosun kiln site in Bunwon-ri and the raw materials from Yanggu-gun, but this was there were various techniques for refining and combining materials in Bunwon-ri.

The Appearance and Its Development of Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain (베트남 청화백자의 출현과 전개)

  • Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain is famous for its unique form and colour of cobalt. It is said to be producted from the late of 14th Century to now. Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain of 14th Century has a Mum design similar to that of Blue and White Porcelain of 14th Century in China. The Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain of 15th, 16th Century was trade Ceramics which were shipped overseas. A base, having a dated inscription corresponding to 1450 and kept in the Topkapi Saray Museum is the best example of Vietnamese trade ceramics. The Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain of 15th, 16th Century was a substitute for Chinese trade ceramics in these times when China had a police of the closure of China borderers to sea trade to protect China and was exported to the western Asia and the Southeast Asia. In recent, Fustat relics of Egypt was excavated the Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain. It means that Vietnamese Ceramics of 15th, 16th Century was substitute for Chinese trade ceramics. In addition, Thai Blue celadon of 15th Century was exported to the western Asia as like Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain. But when a police of the closure of China borderers to sea trade in China was stopped in the late of 16th Century and Chinese Ceramics were reborn in the same time, the Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain was declined as trade items.

The Development of Textile Pattern Designs for Car Seats Using Patterns Expressed on Nineteenth-century Blue and White Porcelain (19세기 청화백자에 표현된 문양을 활용한 자동차 시트 직물 패턴디자인 개발)

  • In this study, the patterns expressed on nineteenth-century blue and white porcelain among Joseon white porcelain were selected as the material for the development of the car seat fabric design. It was intended to be applied to car seat design by incorporating Korea's own traditional patterns to fit modern sensibility. First, seven pieces of nineteenth-century blue and white porcelain were selected through the literature, and motifs were produced using adobe illustrator, a computer graphic program. Seven car seat fabric designs were developed according to the construction method and development method of the produced motif. Work 1 was designed to elicit a soft and feminine atmosphere using the peony pattern shown in Table 1-1. Work 2 aimed to express a luxurious atmosphere using the image of the mountain expressed in Table 1-2 as a design material. Works 3 was designed by freely arranging the letters of luck expressed in Table 1-3 to form a free and dynamic image. Work 4 was intended to express a stable and rhythmic atmosphere by horizontally arranging the images of the gently curved wings, tail, and rhythmical tail feathers of the phoenix expressed in Table 1-4. Work 5 was designed in a vertical arrangement using the patterns and silhouettes of the tiger's back expressed in Table 1-5. Work 6 was designed using the wave pattern expressed in Table 1-6 to replicate the rhythmic atmosphere. Work 7 was designed using the images of rocks, waves, and the sun in Table 1-7 to express a calm and antique atmosphere.

  • The Fine Art Department has sent a list of ceramic ware to the Conservation Science Laboratory of the National Museum of Korea for conservation treatment. The listed ceramic ware will be newly displayed in the ceramic ware gallery of Yongsan Museum after it is opened. Based on the list, Conservation Science Laboratory has been taking special measures to conservation the ceramic ware since 2002. This paper attempts to introduce the process of restoring the Blue-and-white porcelain Jar with phoenix Design (Jubsoo 631) and Celadon peahen-shaped water dropper (Duksoo 5202).

  • Traditional patterns of Korea vary greatly and have excellent value in terms of artistic merit. Nevertheless because there are not enough the research and development of them, traditional patterns of Korea are not yet recognized in internationally aesthetic value. Therefore the development of designs modernizing traditional patterns of Korea is urgently needed. In this study, I chose Four gracious plants as the subject materials of textile design development. Before everything I examined data of Four gracious plants expressed on Blue and white porcelain. And I chose data that are suitable to express modern image among them. I set my face to develop the textile design of Korean images by adding modern scenes with them. Also, I were trying to make fashion products like muffler and tie by using techniques such as burn out, crayon dying and spray dyeing.

  • To restore the Under glaze Blue -White porcelain kiln site of choson period, where is located at 114, SanBon 2 Dong GunPo city. it was used to the conservation method, particularly F.R.P.(Fiber glass Reinforced plastic) for moving the kiln site from the present area to historic site No. 342 after restoration.

A Inquiry of Zhang Bo-duan's Writings (장백단(張伯端)의 저술고(著述考))

  • Zhang Bo-duan compiled about internal alchemy in Taoism. Although he lived in the mundane world, he wished to seek theory on neidan of Taoism(internal alchemy). After finding enlightenment, he elucidated that the enlightenment was a state of rising above world not needed to leave the world. After ages, he was admired as the founder of Taoism in Southern school and his Oh Jin Peon which contents internal alchemy was considered seriously to have more than 30 people who annotated with it until Ch'ing Empire. At his age of 80, he met the real person who gave him theory on neidan of Taoism(internal alchemy), its preface tells that he organized its main point, and then wrote Oh Jin Peon with it in 1075. Generally Zhang Bo-duan was known to leave three books as Oh Jin Peon, Guem Dan Sa Baek Ja, and Cheung Hwa Bi Mun, most of critics have been studying on the basis of them. However, it is not correct whether all of them is his writings and there is not exact analysis but simple belief about it. I think accuracy and details are indispensible in philosophical approach. The study not having verification about primary data is no more than a visionary projet which soon collapses. So the purpose of this study is adding the detail analysis on it and making its exact basis of philosophical approach. Zhang Bo-duan over his age of 80, became enlightened, in his old age handed down his student the secret as a record and theory on neidan of Taoism(internal alchemy). And not in his living but after his dying his status was soared. Because of his high status in internal alchemy Taoism, it seems that there are more interest in it and some published books which just leave his name. In this study, I accept Oh Jin Peon as a his real writing among unsure his writings and criticize systematically and classify its characteristics. And I demonstrate that Guem Dan Sa Baek Ja, Cheung Hwa Bi Mun couldn't be his real writings, these could be forgeries by posterity, with proposing some basis of the argument.

Computed tomography investigation of the three-dimensional structure and production method of White Porcelain Water Dropper with Openwork Lotus Scroll Design and Eight Trigram Design in Cobalt-blue Underglaze (CT 조사를 통한 청화백자투각연당 초팔괘문연적의 3차원적 구조와 제작방법에 대한 고찰)

  • This study investigated White Porcelain Water Dropper with Openwork Lotus Scroll Design and Eight Trigram Design in Cobalt-blue Underglaze (hereinafter, the "water dropper") in the collection of the National Museum of Korea using computed tomography (CT). A replica was produced to examine both the structure and its original production method. The CT scanning identified no joint lines or pores in the clay, which suggests that the body (the lower part of the water dropper) was shaped in a single piece using a mold and was then matched with a mold-formed lid (the upper part of the water dropper). The inner container of the body portion was roughly trimmed with a bamboo knife so that its upper surface could be securely attached to the bottom of the lid and prevent any leakage in the joined surface. It appears that the inner container for storing water was made first in a cylindrical shape that met the unit of quantity used at the time and could be easily formed by molding. It was transformed into a trapezoid shape during the process of combining it with the lid. A cylindrical inner container was reproduced using silicon 3D printing to compare its capacity with that of the original inner container. The comparison revealed that the reproduced container had a capacity of 152.5㎖, whereas the original container holds approximately 168.6㎖, a figure similar to three hop (around 174㎖) in Joseon-period units of quantity. Since the capacity of the cylindrical inner container corresponds to a known measure from the late Joseon dynasty, it is likely that the water dropper was originally produced to contain a cylindrical inner container.
