To investigate the separation of La(III) from sulfuric acid solutions containing Fe(III), rare earth double salt precipitation experiments were performed by adding sodium sulfate. In this work, the effect of sodium sulfate, Fe(III), and La(III) concentrations; reaction temperature; and time was investigated. The extent of precipitation of La(III) was proportional to the concentrations of Na+ and SO42- in the solution. As the reaction temperature increased to 100 ℃, the extent of precipitation of La(III) increased. The extent of precipitation of Fe(III) decreased with increasing reaction time. The concentration ratio of Fe(III) to La(III) did not have a significant effect on the precipitation of La(III). Our results indicate that it is possible to separate La(III) from a ferric sulfate solution through selective precipitation by adding sodium sulfate.

In situ permeable reactive barrier (PRB) technologies have been proposed to reductively remove organic contaminants from the subsurface environment. The major reactive material, zero valent iron ($Fe^0$), is oxidized to ferrous iron or ferric iron in the barriers, resulting in the decreased reactivity. Iron-reducing bacteria can reduce ferric iron to ferrous iron and iron reduced by these bacteria can be applied to dechlorinate chlorinated organic contaminants. Iron reduction by iron reducing bacteria, Shewanella algae BrY, was observed both in aqueous and solid phase and the enhancement of TCE removal by reduced iron was examined in this study. S. algae BrY preferentially reduced Fe(III) in ferric citrate medium and secondly used Fe(III) on the surface of iron oxides as an electron acceptor. Reduced iron formed reactive materials such as green rust ferrihydrite, and biochemical precipitation. These reactive materials formed by the bacteria can enhance TCE removal rate and removal capacity of the reactive barrier in the field.

I reviewed an ecological and environmental significance of microbial carbon respiration coupled to dis-similatory reduction of fe(III) to Fe(II) which is one of the major processes controlling mineralization of organic matter and behavior of metals and nutrients in various anaerobic environments. Relative significance of Fe(III) reduction in the mineralization of organic matter in diverse marine environments appeared to be extremely variable, ranging from negligible up to $100\%$. Cenerally, Fe(III) reduction dominated anaerobic car-bon mineralization when concentrations of reactive Fe(III) were higher, indicating that availability of reactive Fe(III) was a major factor determining the relative significance of Fe(III) reduction in anaerobic carbon mineralization. In anaerobic coastal sediments where $O_2$ supply is limited, tidal flushing, bioturbation and vegetation were most likely responsible for regulating the availability of Fe(III) for Fe(III) reducing bacteria (FeRB). Capabilities of FeRB in mineralization of organic matter and conversion of metals implied that FeRB may function as a useful eco-technological tool for the bioremediation of anoxic coastal environments contaminated by toxic organic and metal pollutants.

The smelting reduction of spent lithium-ion batteries results in metallic alloys containing Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Si. A process to separate metal ions from the sulfuric acid leaching solution of these metallic alloys has been reported. In this process, ionic liquids are employed to separate Fe(III) and Cu(II). In this study, D2EHPA and Cyanex 301 were employed to replace these ionic liquids. Fe(III) and Cu(II) from the sulfate solution were sequentially extracted using 0.5 M D2EHPA with three stages of cross-current and 0.3 M Cyanex 301. The stripping of Fe(III) and Cu(II) from the loaded phases was performed using 50% (v/v) and 60% (v/v) aqua regia solutions, respectively. The mass balance results from this process indicated that the recovery and purity percentages of the metals were greater than 99%.

Iron-coated sand(ICS) was prepared with variation of particle size of Joomoonjin sand, primary and secondary coating temperature, coating time, and dosage of initial Fe(III). An optimum condition of the preparation ICS was selected from the coating efficiency, stability of coated Fe(III), and removal efficiency of As(V). Coated amount of Fe(III) increased as primary coating temperature increased with smaller particle size of sand. Coating efficiency was quite similar over the investigated secondary coating temperature and time, while adsorption efficiency of As(V) onto ICS was severely reduced with ICS prepared at higher secondary coating temperature. By considering these results, an optimum secondary coating temperature and time for the preparation of ICS was selected as $150^{\circ}C$ and 1-hr, respectively. Coating efficiency increased us the dosage of initial Fe(III) up to 0.8 Fe(III) mol/kg sand and then no distinct increase was noted. Maximum As(V) adsorption was observed at 0.8 Fe(III) mol/kg sand. Secondary coating temperature and time were important parameters affecting stability of ICS, showing decreased dissolution of Fe(III) from ICS prepared at higher coating temperature and at longer coating time. From anionic type adsorption of As(V) onto ICS, it is possible to suggest the application of ICS for the removal of As(V) contaminated in acidic water system.
A selective method for the determination of iron(III) ion with a sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) modified glassy carbon electrode was proposed. It was based on the electrostatic attraction and complexation of the SDS modifier, $(DS^-)_n-Fe^{3+}$. The determination of iron(III) ion was performed by a differential pulse voltammetry(DPV), and the reduction peak potential of $(DS^-)_n-Fe^{3+}$ was +0.466(${\pm}0.002$)V vs. Ag/AgCl. For the determination of iron(III) ion, a linear calibration curve was obtained within the iron(III) ion concentration range of $0.50{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}10{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$, and the detection limit was $0.14{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$. $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Mn^{2+}$ showed little or no effect on the determination of iron(III) ion, respectively. But, ion such as each $CN^- $ and $SCN^-$ interfered seriously.
Microbial metal reduction influences the biogeochemical cycles of carbon and metals as well as plays an important role in the bioremediation of metals, radionuclides, and organic contaminants. The use of bacteria to facilitate the production of magnetite nanoparticles and the formation of carbonate minerals may provide new biotechnological processes for material synthesis and carbon sequestration. Metal-reducing bacteria were isolated from a variety of extreme environments, such as deep terrestrial subsurface, deep marine sediments, water near Hydrothemal vents, and alkaline ponds. Metal-reducing bacteria isolated from diverse extreme environments were able to reduce Fe(III), Mn(IV), Cr(VI), Co(III), and U(VI) using short chain fatty acids and/or hydrogen as the electron donors. These bacteria exhibited diverse mineral precipitation capabilities including the formation of magnetite ($Fe_3$$O_4$), siderite ($FeCO_3$), calcite ($CaCO_3$), rhodochrosite ($MnCO_3$), vivianite [$Fe_3$($PO_4$)$_2$ .$8H_2$O], and uraninite ($UO_2$). Geochemical and environmental factors such as atmospheres, chemical milieu, and species of bacteria affected the extent of Fe(III)-reduction as well as the mineralogy and morphology of the crystalline iron mineral phases. Thermophilic bacteria use amorphous Fe(III)-oxyhydroxide plus metals (Co, Cr, Ni) as an electron acceptor and organic carbon as an electron donor to synthesize metal-substituted magnetite. Metal reducing bacteria were capable of $CO_2$conversion Into sparingly soluble carbonate minerals, such as siderite and calcite using amorphous Fe(III)-oxyhydroxide or metal-rich fly ash. These results indicate that microbial Fe(III)-reduction may not only play important roles in iron and carbon biogeochemistry in natural environments, but also be potentially useful f3r the synthesis of submicron-sized ferromagnetic materials.
Complex formation between ferric ion and phosphoric acid has been studied in the wide range of the acid concentration(0${\sim}40{\%}$) by uv-visible spectroscopy and by characterization of the isolated products. The electronic spectra of Fe(III)-containing phosphoric acid solutions exhibit two visible bands at 19.2 and 24.1 kK, which are characteristic of Fe(III)-phosphate complex formation. The measurements of acid concentration dependence of the opical density of the 24.1 kK band indicates the presence of two distinct forms of Fe(Ⅲ)-phosphate complexes possibly $[Fe(H_xPO_4)]^{x+}\;and\;[Fe_2 (H_xPO_4)]^{(3+x)+}$. The 1:1 complex has been isolated for characterization, and the phosphate ion was found to be coordinated to the metal in monobasic state whereas the isolation of the dimeric species was unsuccessful.
We tried to analyze the growth time for secretion of the iron containing superoxide dismutase by comparing the intra-and extracellular enzyme activity from Streptomyces subrutilus P5 and analyze possible genetic information for this enzyme secretion. The mycelial dry weights and glucose concentrations in culture filtrates were determined during growth. Glucose was consumed rapidly during logarithmic growth phase and almost exhausted at 24 h of cultivation. While the intracellular activity of iron containing superoxide dismutase was first appeared at three hours, the extracellular activity of this enzyme appeared from 7.5 h of cultivation, early logarithmic growth phase. This early presence of the superoxide dismutase might not be the result of cell lysis but active secretion pathway. There was no information for signal peptide responsible for the enzyme secretion in sodF. However, we found a type three secretion box in the promoter region of sodF that has been known for the genes of type III secreted proteins in other bacteria. This is the first report on the possible existence of type III secretion in Streptomyces.
Amine salts of five tetrahedral and three octahedral oxalatoferrate(Ⅲ) complexes have been prepared including pyridinium salts of unreported oxalate complex ions $[FeC_2O_4Br_2]^-,$$[FeC_2O_4(NCS)_4]^{3-}$ and $[Fe_2(C_2O_4)_3Cl_4]^{4-},$ the latter being most photoreactive. The structural aspects of these new complex ions as well as of other oxalatoferrates(III) have been discussed based on their analytical data and infrared spectra. The results of molar conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements of all these oxalatoferrate(III) complexes were also presented.
