  • In this study, we developed an analogical experimental design strategy emphasizing understanding and checking stages and applied it to four groups consisting of 7th grade science-gifted students. We classified the patterns of experimental design processes and analyzed the verbal interactions among the science-gifted students at the levels of turn and interaction unit. The analyses of the results reveled that three groups were relevant to reinitiated motion and the other to backward-divergent motion. In the analyses of turn and interaction unit, the frequencies of the statements related to the task were high, especially 'making suggestion' and 'elaborated symmetrical interaction'. The analyses for each stage of strategy indicated that the frequencies of 'explain', 'question', and 'cumulative interaction' at understanding stage were high. At designing stage, the frequencies of 'making suggestion', 'cumulative interaction', and 'disputative interaction' were found to be high. At checking stage, 'making suggestion', 'receiving opinion', and 'disputative interaction' were high. In the comparison of the patterns, the qualitative differences among interaction unit were found at all the stages, whereas there were differences only between designing and checking stages in the turn cases. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • In this study, the models described in the textbooks related to floating and sinking phenomena in the chemical domain were evaluated based on the aspect of nature related to the generation of models. To achieve this, we were targeting statement of textbooks from 7th curriculum to 2009 revised curriculum. Analysis of textbooks was performed for science of elementary school (total 2 textbooks) and science of middle school (total 21 textbooks) which dealt with these phenomena. According to the textbooks analysis, characteristics of statement way were (1) No description of the model's prerequisites, (2) Statement based matter viewpoint, (3) Lack of pattern principle, (4) Inadequacy of the case covered. Although the education about the model for the students should be preceded by the education related to the process of model creation rather than the activity using the model, the education about the nature of the model is insufficient. In order to solve this problem, we propose the model statement in textbooks and the development of the model evaluation tool related to model creation.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the concept of igneous rock textures and to uncover incorrect descriptions regarding the concept found within high school Earth Science II course seventh curriculum textbooks. Based upon this analysis suggestions will be made so as to improve descriptions regarding the concept of igneous rock texture. At least some incorrect descriptions regarding igneous rock texture were found in all the textbooks examined. Textures of volcanic rocks are described as being either fine-grained and glassy or porphyritic, while those of plutonic rocks are described as hollocrystalline, granular, coarse-grained or equigranular. These descriptions may contribute to forming and/or reinforcing misconceptions about both the classification criteria for, as well as the general concept of igneous rock textures. Therefore, some improvement schemes for the classification of igneous rock textures have been suggested. These schemes suggest that volcanic rocks be classified as either aphanitic or porphyritic, while plutonic rocks be classified as phaneritic, hollocrystalline or equigranular according to granularity, crystallinity, and both the absolute and relative sizes of the crystals within the rock.

  • The purpose of this study is to try to structuralize the perception of the mothers of science-gifted elementary students using the concept mapping approach. The mothers who participated in this research had children who were 5th and 6th graders selected as science-gifted by a regional education office, a science high school and two national universities in a city. One of the authors interviewed 26 mothers, and extracted 50 general statements of their perceptions about the career path of their children. Ten mothers who participated in interviews sorted a shuffled pack of statement cards. The categorization of the statements into the dissimilarity matrix was carried out by SPSS multidimensional scaling analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis to generate a conceptual diagram. After that 140 mothers rated each statement using a Likert-type response scale from one to five. The result showed six clusters of parental views such as were 'Burden of private education, grades and going to the next grade,' 'Thinking about career guidance in gifted education and school,' 'Parental roles in child career education,' 'Difficulties in career guidance at home,' 'Demand for strengthening the parental capacity for career guidance,' and 'Demand for social support.' 'Demand for social support' obtained the highest sympathy from mothers of elementary science gifted.

  • This study attempted to examine how we really think about our daily duties, work, and labor, and what it means. In particular, in this study, using the Q-methodology, one of the "qualitative studies," diagnosed and categorized general workers' thoughts about their work and labor. Accordingly, the following analysis results were derived. First, as a result of the analysis, three types were derived, and the types were named as follows based on the Q statement emphasized by each type. emphasizes statements such as 'blessing/happiness', 'rest', 'lover', and 'reward' for work, and labor was named 「Positive Type」. was named as 「Negative Type」 because statements such as 'painfulness', 'the beginning of the day', 'duty', and 'war' were emphasized. In , 'colleagues and friends' and 'learning' were positive, and 'beginning of the day', 'duty', and 'rest' were expressed as negative statements, so it was named as 「Positive Neutral Type」. 'Work' and 'labor', which are indispensable beings in our daily life, are blessings that must be done, happiness, and co-workers and friends, but the value of their existence is possible when appropriate 'resting' is assumed. In addition, Q methodology is expected to be confirmed as an empirical study in the future, as well as usefulness as a hypothesis abductive approach.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the versatility of indecisive clients which is one of the seven key factors to identify indecisiveness by analyzing Holland's 3-letter code with consistency and calculus. By implementing the method of Occupational Card Sort, all six clients showed low consistency in the three codes as well as between the first code and their thesis statements. They also showed mismatching of three codes evaluated with the thesis statements. From observing calculus from the hexagonal model, all six Holland codes showed balanced development and similarity of calculus between the codes in adjacent. The result of the study finds that various interests may cause indecision in one's career decision-making.

  • The purpose of the study was to compare science curriculum documents of the several countries including Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Singapore. The comparison focused on goals and contents in science education of each country. The goals for science education in each country were very similar. They included understanding knowledge, acquiring inquiry skills, developing positive attitudes towards science, and appreciating S-T-S in most countries. But each country's goal setting level was different; some countries set the same goals for several grades and other countries set different goals for each grade. Goals provided for each grade were more specific and elaborated. Science contents were categorized differently in each country. In Korea, science contents were categorized in energy, matter, living things, and earth. On the other hand, science contents were composed of 8 categories including unifying concepts and processes in science, science as inquiry, physical science, life science, earth and space science, science and technology, science in personal and social perspectives, and history and nature of science in the United States. In the United Kingdom, science enquiry, life processes and living things, materials and their properties, and physical process were categories for science contents. In Singapore, science contents were organized by themes relevant to students' everyday experience. Implications for goals and contents in science education to prepare students to live and work in a future society were suggested based on the results of the study.
