  • This study delineates the process of analyzing the illustrations in high school English I textbook. The goal of this study is to shed light on the issues related to producing better English textbooks. The methods include analysis of the illustrations in the textbook developed under the 2009 Revised National Curriculum and surveys of teachers and students' awareness about them. This study classified common features in the illustrations to devise four analysis criteria: cultural aspects, expression styles, expression techniques, and linguistic functions of the illustrations. The questionnaire was made for both teachers and students. The questions in the survey of teachers were about the relevance to the contents, the layout and formation, learners' interest, cognitive aspects, easiness of teaching and learning, and connectivity with language functions. In the survey of students, familiarity, interest level, learnability, favored expression technique and expression material were considered. The result of the surveys showed that the teachability and learnability are key factors in developing illustrations for English textbooks, and they should look familiar to the students.

  • Through the criticism and evaluation of different classes teaching the same lesson topic, this study compared the viewpoints by two ways between two groups including pre-service and experienced teachers. Through free-style criticism, this study analyzed the differences between pre-service and experienced teachers' areas of attention. Through criteria-based analysis, the study analyzed the judgement of each area and the criteria of each judgement. The results of the study found that pre-service teachers criticised more limited areas, but somewhat more positive than their experienced teacher counterparts. Also, pre-service teachers did not observe thoroughly whether or not the teacher was well-informed of the science content, the sequence of curriculum, and whether or not meaningful interaction had occurred. As well as, pre-service teachers were not actually feel importance of student-oriented lessons, and they could not look room and materials are useful to students on students' sides. Additionally, pre-service teachers thought highly of lessons which were connected to other subjects rather than connected to daily life. Therefore, to notice diverse areas in the class, pre-service teachers need to criticise lessons using a diverse criterion. Also, pre-service teachers realized simple questions and that mechanical group activities are not always effective and that they need to think how to improve meaningful interaction. Moreover, they have to perceive that an inquiry-oriented student-lead approach is very important. Lastly, pre-service teachers have to closely consider the room efficiency and materials available to the students, and they must internalize that science class has to be connected with daily life.

  • Inspired by the idea that classroom instruction proceeds through knowledge-sharing, this study examined different modes of knowledge-sharing that were realized in discursive practices in Korean secondary science classrooms. Data came from 9 science teachers. An interpretative strategy was employed to analyze the video-recording of the teachers' own science classrooms and transcriptions. The results showed four different modes of knowledge-sharing, including 'retrieving subject matter knowledge', 'reformulating subject matter knowledge', 'expansion and elaboration of understanding', and 'negotiation of meaning'. It was also revealed that there was a tie between an active mode of knowledge-sharing and scaffolding: the former allowed students to take active roles in discourses and the latter was one of the desired patterns of classroom interaction. It was suggested that further studies should be conducted to understand science instruction from more varied perspectives and to examine and utilize the detailed features of desired classroom practices like scaffolding.

  • This study aims to develop the NABI program, which can be applied to science education in school, to realize 'Science Education through Nature' for today's students. The first NABI program was developed based on the viewpoints of education and teaching methods of Nature-Study, and it was revised as the second NABI program through experts' workshop. The second NABI program was applied to 24 third-grade students of an elementary school. The possibility of applying the program to school science education was explored through the analysis of students' qualitative data, along with surveys that were completed by 24 students and 79 current teachers. As a result of applying the program, students were curious about and communed with nature. The program could also realize the learner-centered education and integration of subjects, science with literature and art. The students were interested and wanted to continually participate in the NABI program. The teachers' evaluation of the program deduced that the relationship between the program presenting Nature-Study ideologies could be applied to science education in school. In conclusion, it was found that the NABI program was well reflected in the scope of the Nature-Study, and it can be applied to science education in school. The NABI program proceeds in nine steps: 'Accepting - Choosing - Selecting the common subject - Ice Breaking - Making relationship - Observing - Scaffolding - Expressing - Sharing'. The NABI program is a good way to realize the essence of science education, 'Science Education through Nature', for today's students.

  • The major purposes of this study were 1) to present a desirable guideline for writers who would develop the new Introduction-to-Industry textbook through the comparative analysis of 4 different kinds of current Introduction-to-Industry textbooks, 2) to help educators, who make national college entrance exam in the vocational inquiry area, make good exam items with the results of the study, and 3) to offer effective methods of teaching and learning in the field of industrial education with them. Research method used in this study was mainly literature review with the scrutinization of the literature related to the Introduction-to-Industry textbooks. Results of this study showed that all textbooks compared do mostly comply with the national writer's specific guidelines for the Introduction-to-Industry textbooks. However there were varieties for the all textbooks in a sense of deployment balance for the contents of the textbook chapters. There were also considerable differences for the deployment of supplementary materials, evaluative materials, visual materials and etc. according to the characteristics of each textbook. The degree of the connectivity between the textbooks and the national college entrance exam in the area of the vocational inquiry was similar for the each textbook. However, it was not good enough for the students to study one textbook for the preparation of the exam in the vocational inquiry area because the problems in the exam were set in the range of covering the all different kinds of textbooks by the examiners.

  • Textbooks used in Information Society need to use many illustrations and pictures which have positive effect in motivating and triggering students to study. "Pictures mean more than thousands of the word" says that it is significant to use media in class through visual materials. To meet the needs of the times, I examined one of the units, "IV Understanding Humans and Cultural Phenomena", among 7 authorized 'Society Culture' textbooks, so that there are 123 illustrations and 342 pictures that the percentage of them was 35.65% totally in the unit. On the examination of the frequency of using contents in each category, the illustrations are used 59 times (47.96%) in the research activity and the pictures 145 times (42.4%) in the context, which are most frequently used. Also on the examination into the actual states using contents among 'Society Culture' teachers by in-depth interviewing, they often use them when their class starts. And they require more increase in the illustrations than the pictures for easy and clear understanding and need more contents offering in the research activity to help students to study more interesting. Finally, on the result of the analysis of contents used in textbooks, exemplary cases were available to convey enough information without reading the context in the textbook because the proposed illustrations expressed the research activity's subject and the context's subject effectively. Even more, one illustration was able to indicate the sub-unit's subject while also presenting the content to be learned in the unit. However, improper cases included illustrations which are somewhat unrealistic or difficult to understand. Further, there are also some illustrations which are not related to the context. If these points are revised in the future, textbooks would be better.

  • The impact of a central place on daily living over wide outlying territory has been one of traditional subjects in the field of urban geography. The flow of rural population toward the central city of Chinju characterizes the population movement in Western Kyungnam, where the spillover of urban population into outlying areas, an especially prominent phenomenon in American society, does not occur. The central city of Chinju is supposed to be the most favored settlement area in Western Kyungnam. More than two thousands of teachers. who live in Chinju, cross the city boundary each morning to do their jobs in Western Kyungnam. But only ninety teachers living outside Chinju commute to the workplace in the city. The teachers willingly spend hours commuting each day to enjoy better quality of life in the central city. In fact, the central city of Chinju functions as bedroom communities for many middle-class workers in Western Kyungnam. On the basis of teachers' commuting behavior, four levels of Chinju's urban spheres are identified in Western Kyungnam. As Table-6 and Figure-2 show, the first-order level of Chinju's sphere includes most Myuns of Sanchung/Hadong Guns and some Myuns of Sachun/Gosung Guns. The second-order level comprises Sanchung/Sachun Eubs and many Myuns of Sachun /Gosung Guns. The third-order level is made up of Samchunpo, Hadong/Gosung/Eryung/Namhae/Habchun/Hamyang Eups, and many Myuns of Eryung/Namhae/Habchun Guns. And all of Guchang Gun and most Myuns of Hamyang Gun belong to the fourth-order level of Chinju's sphere. The influence sphere of Metropolitan Chinju is extended farther in the direction of less competition with other metropolises. Such a situation occurs to the west and south of Chinju. Daily commuting, defined as the journeys to and from work, is an excellent indicator for delimiting urban spheres of influence.
