  • In order to investigate the distribution and density of root-knot nematodes in economic crops, samples were collected from 3,226 fields of 18 economic crops. Nematodes were extracted using a modified Baermann's funnel technique. Identification of races was based on the differential host-test for Meloidogyne spp. by Tayler and Sasser. M. hapla was dominant in fields in the middle parts of Korean peninsula; M. incognita, in the southern parts, and distribution of M. javanica was limited to Jeju island and southern seaside areas. Two races of M. arenaria identified in this study were races 1 and 2. The three races identified in M. incognita were races, 1, 2 and 3. Of these races, race 1 of M. arenaria and race 3 of M. icognita were identified for the first time in Korea.

  • A taxonomic study of Habenaria in Korea was carried out based on the extensive examinations of floral morphologies and distribution. As the results, we classified the genus in Korea into the following 5 species; H. linearifolia Maxim., H. cruciformis Ohwi, H. radiata Splengl., H. chejuensis Y.N. Lee & K.S. Lee and H. flagellifera Makino. H. cruciformis is recognized as a distinct species distinguished from H. linearifolia, H. sagittifera Rchb. f. and H. schindleri Schltr., and we clarified its morphological differences from the species. H. linearifolia f. integrilova Ohwi which has been seperated by shape of lateral lobe of lip was merged into f. linearifolia oin this study. Furthermore we investigated the distribution of Habenaria in Korea based on the herbarium specimens and field surveys. The result shows that H. radiata is rare in the middle part of the Korean Peninsula and H. chejuensis and H. flagellifera are restricted in Jeju Island, so the conservation on the habitats of these species is required.

  • To elucidate the distribution of broad-leaved evergreen plants of the central part of the Yellow Sea, we surveyed 136 islands of Incheon from May 2006 to March 2008. In the present survey, twelve broad-leaved evergreen species were found on 77 islands, which included 28 inhabited and 49 uninhabited islands. Among them, the most popular plants were the following: Euonymus japonicus Thunb., Elaeagnus macrophylla Thunb., Camellia japonica L., and Cyrtomium falcatum (L.f.) C. Presl. These plants were found growing on Baengnyeong Island, the northmost island among those surveyed, near $N 37^{\circ}60^{\prime}$. On the other hand the following four species are found up to Deokjeok-myeon only, near N $N 37^{\circ}10^{\prime}$: Hedera rhombea (Miq.) Bean,, Quercus acuta Thunb. ex Murray for. acuta, Neolitsea sericea (Blume) Koidz., and Trachelospermum asiaticum (Siebold & Zucc.) Nakai. However, these plants are usually found growing in the southern or southwestern coastal region of the Korean Peninsula. Thus the distribution of the broad-leaved evergreen plants growing on these high latitude islands might be influenced by a warm current of the Yellow Sea. The distribution of broad-leaved evergreen plants on each island is described.

  • To elucidate the distribution of halophytes in Korea, we surveyed 95 coastal salt marsh and sand dune areas. As a result, 62 halophytes of 57 species, 4 varieties and 1 form belonging to 44 genera and 21 families were recorded from coastal regions and islands of South Korea. Of these, 33 taxa were plants growing on sand dunes and the other 29 in salt marsh. Fifty eight taxa were found on the west coast, which was surveyed at 61 areas. The most common species among them were Suaeda glauca (Bunge) Bunge, Suaeda japonica Makino, Phragmites communis Trin., Zoysia sinica Hance, Carex scabrifolia Steud. in salt marsh, and Salsola komarrovii Iljin, Lathyrus japonicus Willd., Limonium tetragonum (Thunb.) A.A. Bulloc, Calystegia soldanella Roem. & Schult. on sand dunes. On the other hand, only 45 taxa were found on the southern coast, surveyed at 15 areas. On the east coast, surveyed at 13 areas, 44 taxa were found. The most common species were Salsola komarrovii Iljin, Lathyrus japonicus Willd., Calystegia soldanella Roem. & Schult., on sand dunes and Linaria japonica Miq., which on the Korean peninsula is found only on the east coast. On Jeju Island, surveyed at 6 areas, 30 taxa of halophytes were found. Canavalia lineata (Thunb.) DC. is found in Korea only on Jeju Island. About half of the Korean halophytes were members of three families (Chenopodiaceae: 12 species, Poaceae: 12 species and Asteraceae: 7 species).

  • The districbution of $C_3; and; C_4$ type plants in Korea were studied. In the standpoint of photosynthetic types, plant distribution in Korea is classified as $C_3; and; C_4$ type plant zones. The forest destroyed by man interference, cultivating areas, and seashore areas are characterized by the dominant of $C_4$ type plants.(Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5) According to the results of this study, $C_3; and; C_4$ type plant distribution in Korea has a great relation to the habitat of plant vegetation (Table 1). The arid areas were in high proportion of C4 flora percenntages, while the well-developed woody forests or the vegetation of humid areas were in lower proportion(Fig.8).
