  • In the present maritime traffic conditions of Mokpo harbor, there exist many hazardous factors which may lead to huge accidents including marine oil pollution We analyze marine traffic environments including traffic congestion, natural conditions, maritime traffic accidents in the last 10 years, the fishery status, operation of traffic routes and management of navigational aids and regulations relating ships' routeing both in and out of the country. Consequently, this work is to propose improved marine traffic system in future.

Tidal Currents In The Channel Near Incheon Harbour (인천항부근 수로의 조류)

  • Simultaneous tidal current observation at five or seven stations on the channel near Incheon Habour was conducted at neap, mean and spring tides during the period of August 16 to August 27, 1976 and the characteristic of tidal currents with each tide was studied by the analysis of these data. Times of slack refer to the times of high and low waters at neap, mean and spring tides seem to be small. Times of maximum current refer to the times of high and low waters at the mean tide tends to appear earlier than that of the neap tide and later than that of the spring tide. The velocity ratio of maximum ebb current to maximum flood current at the mean tide has larger value than that of neap tide and has smaller value than that of spring tide. The current velocity ratio of spring tide to neap tide and to mean tide are approximately 1.8 and 1.3, respectively.

A Study on Evaluation of Marine Traffic Congestion based on Survey Research in Major Port (주요항만의 실측조사 기반 해상교통혼잡도 평가 연구)

  • In this study, we analyzed AIS measured data for ten days by selecting the four main ports with many ships arriving in the national ports. The peak time congestion of the main ports, calculated by survey research, was about 3.8-5.7 times higher than the hourly average congestion. This is very different from the results of the advanced research, evaluating the marine traffic congestion of the Ulsan main port based on the existing Port-MIS statistical data, which showed a peak time congestion of about 1.7 times higher than the hourly average. This identifies the problem of distorting the traffic characteristics of the current passage. Therefore, in order to evaluate marine traffic congestion, it would be more appropriate to calculate it based on survey research, rather than Port-MIS statistical data.

  • 본 연구는 제주항의 수질관리를 위한 첫 단계로 3차원 수치모델을 이용하여 제주항내의 계절별 제주항의 물리해양환경의 변화 특성을 조사한 결과는 다음과 같다. 제주항의 물리해양환경의 변화에 크게 영향을 미치는 것은 담수 유입인 산지천이라는 것을 알 수 있으며 해역 수질을 악화시키는 원인 중 큰 영향을 미치는 육상오염부하인 미처리된 하.수가 산지천을 통하여 제주항으로 유입될 때 오염물질의 영향은 항만 전체에 미치는 것을 예상할 수 있다 이상의 결과는 제주항의 수질관리를 위하여 항만내 오염물질의 거동 및 제어를 위한 기초자료로 이용될 수 있을 것이다.

Characterization of Antidiabetic Compounds from Extract of Torreya nucifera (비자나무 추출물의 항당뇨 활성물질의 특성 연구)

  • Natural products have gained increasing attention due to their advantage of long-term safety and low toxicity for a very long time. Torreya nucifera is widespread in southern Korea and Jeju Island and its seeds are commonly used as edible food. Oriental ingredients have often been reported for their insecticidal, antioxidant and antibacterial properties, but there have not yet been any studies on their antidiabetic effect. In this study, we investigated several biological activities of T. nucifera pericarp (TNP) and seeds (TNS) extracts and proceeded to characterize the antidiabetic compounds of TNS. The initial results suggested that TNS extract at 15 and 10 ㎍/ml concentration has inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase and protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B, that is 14.5 and 4.35 times higher than TNP, respectively. Thus, the stronger antidiabetic TNS was selected for the subsequent experiments to characterize its active compounds. Ultrafiltration was used to determine the apparent molecular weight of the active compounds, showing 300 kDa or more. Finally the mixture was then partially purified using Diaion HP-20 column chromatography by eluting with 50~100% methanol. Therefore we concluded that the active compounds of TNS have potential as therapeutic agents in functional food or supplemental treatment to improve diabetic diseases.

Phylogenetic diversity of marine bacteria dependent on the port environment around the Ulleng Island (울릉도 항구의 해양환경에 따른 해양미생물의 분포 변화)

  • Pyrosequencing of 16S rDNA tags was used to obtain the bacterial diversity and community structure in the uncultured seawaters as well as in the cultured seawaters, which were collected from the 7 ports (Cheonbu, Hyunpo, Taeha, Namyang, Sadong, Dodong, and Jeodong) and 1 seashore (Guam) around the Ulleng island, Korea. Alphaproteobacteria were the most abundant group in the clean seawaters such as seawaters of Taeha and Sadong ports. Gammaproteobacteria proportion increased depending upon the wastewater amounts mixed with the seawaters such as seawaters of Namyang, Dodong, and Jeodong ports. The genuses of Alteromonas (from samples of Cheonbu, Taeha, Guam, Namyang, Sadong), Shewanella (from sample of Jeodong), and Vibrio (from samples of Hyunpo and Dodong) were dominant group in each of the cultured seawaters incubated in marine broth (Difoco). The results suggest that the incoming wastewaters to the port seawaters contribute to the dynamic change of the marine bacterial community around the Ulleng island.

A Study on the Forecasting of Container Freight Volume for Donghae Port and Sokcho Port (동해항 및 속초항의 컨테이너물동량 예측에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to prepare container port policy and to contribute to the regional economy by forecasting of the container freight volume for the Donghae Port and Sokcho Port. As a methodology a survey and O/D technique were adopted. O/D technique was applied to the container freight data of Korea Maritime Institute. The main results of this paper are as follows: First, it is adviserable that Gangwondo Province should adopt incentive program of 100,000 won Per TEU rather than 50,000 won per TEU. Secondly, container freight volume for Donghae Port and Sokcho Port is forecast to be 22,388 TEU in 2010, 152,367 TEU in 2015 and 354,217 TEU from 6,653 TEU in 2008. Thirdly, joint port marketing is required for the Donghae Port and Sokcho Port in terms of same region in one hour drive.

A Study on the Strategies for the Reduction of Port Pollution (환경의 환경오염 저감방안에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, International institution such as IMO and major maritime countries have introduced various regulations and steps to reduce port pollution. However, recognition of environmental pollution from ports is not sufficient for Korean policy makers and port communities. The purpose of this paper is to examine solutions to port pollution problems and suggests some implications to Korean ports to become a green port. To this aim, necessity of regulation on environmental pollution from port operation; literature survey on port's environmental pollution; current conditions of international port pollution; various regulations and policies governing major ports are conducted in this paper. Our main findings are as follows; first, air pollution from ship can be reduced by providing electric power at docks while at berth, Second, in case of cargo-handling equipment, retire old equipment and switch to cleaner fuel such as low-sulfur fuel and diesel emulsions. Third, offering incentives for the installation of pollution controls and minimizing idling by enforcing idling limits or by installing idle shutoff controls can be recommended for reduction of air pollution of truck and rail at ports.

  • Among the oriental medicine compounds, sulfur is known as a heat-generation material in a human body. Heat-generation reaction results in the consumption of energy source. Some oriental herbs are used to treat obesity and blood lipid composition. Therefore, we hypothesized that a sulfur containing oriental medicine compound, called as Hangbisan, could help weight loss of experimental rats. This study was designed to observe the change of weight of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats that had been fed with high-fat diet containing 10% cellulose or Hangbisan for 9 weeks. Hangbisan affected the weight loss of rats as reducing the level of plasma cholesterol and triglyceride and increasing the level of HDL-cholesterol. Thus, this study revealed Hangbisan have an anti-obesity effect and a potential role for anti-obesity agent in the application of oriental medicine compounds.
