Nursing literature suggests that the self-concept of nurses gives an important implications to educators and administrators as well as clinicians for their professional development. With a view to exploring how nurses view themselves, the Professional Self-Concept of Nurses Instrument (PSCNI) using 27 Likert items was developed by Arthur in Australia in 1990. This study is an extension of the PSCNI using Korean samples with some modifications. A convenience sample was drawn from 800 nurses working in three university hospitals in Seoul ; three university hospitals in Kyonggi-do and a university hospital and a psychiatric hospital in Kangwon-do. Seven hundred questionnaires were analyzed using the statistical analysis system(SAS). The reliability of the scale was tested by test-retest and Cronbach's alpha. Differences in the PSCNI, which are closely related to demographic variables, were examined by t-test, ANOVA and the Duncan's multiple range test. Factor analysis was employed so as to examine component factors. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The test-retest reliability of the PSCNI was .79 and Cronbach's alpha was .85. Item correlations with total revealed consistent correlations and subscale reliability varied from .49 to .85. 2. The average score of PSCNI was 75.21 and average item score was 2.79. 3. Twenty four items were derived from the PSCNI 27 items and these items clustered in three component factors. The cumulative percent of variance was 38.12% and for factor 1 was 22.81%, for factor 2, 9.79% and for factor 3, 5.51% respectively 4. A comparison of the scores for the dimensions of the PSCNI shows a relative difference in terms of mean item scores and in descending order, professional practice(m=2.83), communication (m=2.82) and satisfaction(m=2.70). 5. Professional self-concept of nurses was found to vary significantly according to age(P=.0001), religion(P=.0001), academic background(P= .0109), marital status(P=.0001), career(P= .0001) and position(P=.0001). In conclusion, there was a correlation between professional self-concept of nurses, and life and work variables. This study provides an important message for administrators and nurse educators by highlighting factors which can be addressed by education programs, staff development and appraisal. While the test results largely confirm the Australian and Canadian tests, further research is necessary to improve the cumulative percent of variance instead of applying Arthur's PSCNI directly to Korean nurses.

This study was conducted to figure out characteristics of the children of problematic drinkers by reviewing the studies on those children reported in nursing studies in Korea and incorporating the results. The research method was integrated literature review, and for the study, eleven articles were selected by searching with key words such as 'problematic drinking', 'alcoholic', 'alcohol dependence', 'children', and 'nursing' in three research databases, spanning between 2000 and 2014. The research results are as follows: For the domestic nursing studies on the children of problematic drinkers, there were many descriptive research using survey method, requiring introduction of various research methods in order to know characteristics and lives of the children of problematic drinkers in depth. For main characteristics of the children of problematic drinkers, they have lower ability to cope with, many of them suffer from psychological and mental health problems, are very sensitive in interpersonal relationships with higher hostility. In addition, it is reported that the children of problematic drinkers are likely to have more problematic drinking, show higher depression and lower emotional perception and expression, social support, and social competence. Based on the results of this study, considering the fact that there are extremely few studies on the children of problematic drinkers, it requires more active studies and researches in nursing. Through the study with accurate results, it will contribute to nurses' capability in both clinical settings and local community as a guideline.

The purpose of this study was to determine the status of interventional studies to prevent falling in elderly with dementia and to determine the contents and effectiveness of intervention programs to prevent falling. Existing reports published between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2016 were searched electronically using the RISS, National Library, KISS, PubMed, and CINAHL database with the keywords dementia, Alzheimer's or Alzheimer's disease, falling, and prevention of falling. After checking the original sources of the articles, 13 articles were included in the review. Therapeutic interventions used in the articles included exercise therapy (8, 61.5%), physiotherapy and occupational therapy (2, 15.4%), complementary therapies (2, 15.4%), and music therapy (1, 7.7%). As a result of the qualitative evaluation of the papers using a checklist of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network, two studies scored 9 out of 10 points, five studies scored 8 out of 10, and six studies scored 7 out of 10. Intervention sessions were conducted for 55 minutes, on average, for a total of 37 sessions. This study found that exercise, music therapy, physical and occupational therapy, and rhythmic motion therapy were effective in preventing falling in the elderly with dementia. In the future, these findings are expected to be used as a basis for the development of a preventive intervention program for nurses in a clinical setting.

This study was conducted in order to suggest directions for nursing intervention and education to prevent problem drinking of adolescents. We examine the influences of mental health characteristics of adolescents on problem drinking. For the research method, this study conducts secondary analysis using raw data from the 13th (2017) Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. A total of 9,597 cases, excluding adolescents without drinking experience, were used for the final analysis. For the data analysis, the SPSS Win 23.0 program was used, and frequency analysis, ${\chi}^2$-test, and logistic regression analysis were conducted. Research results found general characteristics, school, school record, living type, father's education, and economic state were influencing factors on problem drinking. Regarding characteristics of mental health, depression (95% CI:1.578~1.930, p<.001), subjective happiness (95% CI:1.039~1.491, p=.002), suicidal ideation (95% CI:1.110~1.426, p<.001), and sufficiency of sleep (95% CI:1.085~1.399, p=.001) were primary factors affecting adolescents' problem drinking. Therefore, when conducting education for preventing problem drinking or nursing intervention programs targeting adolescents, it is necessary to provide methods offering experts' in-depth consultation with the consideration of characteristics of mental health of participants. Future research should conduct qualitative studies through in-depth interviews for reviewing problem drinking and identifying characteristics of adolescents. This study provides guidelines for nurses working with problem drinking adolescents in clinical settings and communities.
Purpose: The patient's perspective in the assessment of quality of care has become increasingly important. The purpose of this paper was to introduce the concept of 'QUality Of care Through patient's Eyes (QUOTE)', to analyze the papers using QUOTE through an integrative review method, and to present the attributes of the QUOTE evaluation. Methods: Data were collected from electronic databases. Inclusion criteria were publication in English from 1997 to 2013, as a peer-reviewed research article, with an empirical study focused on QUOTE. Thirty two papers met the criteria and were analyzed. Results: QUOTE had been applied to various groups of patients such as those with various diseases since 1997 in the Netherlands. Four themes were retrieved from synthetic analysis of the thirty-two papers using QUOTE; 1) acceptance of individuation of the patient and family, 2) evaluation of diverse nurses' competencies, 3) evaluation of quality of nursing environments, and 4) participation of patient in the whole process of evaluation. Conclusion: The strengths of QUOTE are that it attempts to overcome the conceptual and methodological problems associated with evaluation of quality of care. Our results imply that QUOTE evaluation could be an effective strategy to improve care of patients in clinical setting.

This study is a qualitative study to uncover the meaning and structure of nursing students' online psychiatric nursing practice experience by applying Parse's research method. The subjects of the study were 9 fourth-year nursing students at K University who took psychiatric nursing practice online in the COVID-19 situation. Data collection was conducted from March 7, 2022 to May 27, 2022. As a result of the study, the core concepts of nursing students' online practice experience in psychiatric nursing in the COVID-19 situation were: 'Recognizing the importance of understanding oneself and others', 'Preparing for communication to build therapeutic relationships', and 'A perspective on the future through exploration of the meaning of nursing'. Structural transposition was presented as 'Empathy for self and others', 'Mindset for interpersonal human relationship', 'Exploring the essence of nursing and self-realization'. Conceptual integration appeared as 'Valuing', 'Revealing-Concealing', 'Revealing-Concealing'. In conclusion, nursing students' online practice experience in mental health nursing in the COVID-19 situation was an experience of growing and transcending as future nurses by recognizing the importance of human understanding and communication for the therapeutic relationship that is the purpose of mental nursing. This study will serve as basic data for efficient clinical practice operations in various unpredictable situations, such as future pandemics.
Nursing students, as prospective nurses, are expected to act as child abuse reporters and advocates for child targets. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a basis for developing a child abuse prevention education program for nursing students by determining the extent of nursing students' perceived target vulnerability and target advocacy, child rights awareness, and intention to report child abuse, and analyzing the relationships among the variables. This study is a descriptive survey study to identify the effects of target vulnerability, target advocacy, and child rights awareness on intention to report child abuse among 154 nursing students, and the data collection period was from July 3 to July 31, 2023, and the collected data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 program. As a result of identifying the influential factors on nursing students' intention to report child abuse, child abuse education, championing social justice as a sub-variable of target advocacy, and target vulnerability, the explanatory power of these variables was 35.8%. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that it is necessary to increase activities through the development and application of simulation education based on actual clinical cases in order to increase nursing students' interest in and education about child abuse.
The purpose of this study is to develop video exercise education for patients with shoulder-joint and evaluate the effects on range of motion, pain and quality of life. This study was conducted in 30 experimental groups and 26 control groups among shoulder-joint patients who were admitted to orthopedic outpatient clinics at university hospitals in G city from January to June 2020. For data analysis, SPSS was used to analyze the general characteristics of the two groups and the pre-homogeneity test for the dependent variables by 𝑥2-test and t-test. As a result of the study, the subject's pre-post score change was found to have a significant difference in the degree of internal rotation of the range of motion and pain score, but there was no significant difference in the flexion, abduction degree of the range of motion and quality of life. In this study, clinical application of video education can be suggested as a way to improve nursing practice as it saves time spent on patient education of nurses not only in outpatients but also in wards.

This descriptive study investigated the factors influencing on subjective happiness of senior nursing students. The participants were 235 nursing students in grades 3 and 4 in K city from May 1, 2019 to May 28, 2019. The data was collected using self-report questionnaires that contained items on subjective happiness, professional intuition, human relationship, major satisfaction, family health, and social support scale. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression analysis with the SPSS 22.0 program. The subjective happiness of the subjects averaged 4.75±1.16 on the 7-point scale, and the subjective happiness according to the general characteristics of the subjects showed a significant difference in health status (F=6.826, p<.001). The most influential factors on the subjects' subjective happiness were health status (β=.177 p=.005), academic satisfaction (β=.138, p=.027), and family health (β=.268, p<.001), and the explanatory power of the model was 16.7% (F=15.160, p<.001). The results of this study may provide a foundation to develop an efficient intervention program to improve the happiness of senior nursing students.
As medical practices and procedures become more specialized and information technology develops in clinical settings, health organizations need medical personnel with special skills, knowledge and competency. But the lack of practical experience in clinical settings may impair competency in basic nursing skills among nursing students. This study used a cross-sectional survey to analyze factors related to nursing competency among nursing students in order to establish effective teaching methods to increase the clinical competency of nursing students. The data were collected from a questionnaire distributed in several universities among 106 nursing students who expressed a willingness to participate in the study during December 2011 in order to measure self-directedness, professional self-concepts, communication ability, learning satisfaction. The data were analyzed using the SPSS window program. There were differences regarding competency in basic nursing skills according to interpersonal relationships, grades, existence of an open lab. The level of learning satisfaction, communication skills and self-directedness were deemed influencing factors regarding competency in basic nursing skills. These 3 elements account for 49.9% of competency with regard to basic nursing skills. According to existing research, blended learning methods which consist of problem based learning, cyber education or case centered education should be considered as effective teaching methods for developing clinical nursing skills.
