The applications of reduced integration technique, addition of nonconforming modes, and their coupling to the Mindlin plate elements to improve their basic behavior are reviewed and the establishment of a series of new plate elements by combined use of these schemes are presented in this paper. The element formulation is based upon quadratic Mindlin plate concept. The results obtained by new elements converged to the exact solutions very rapidly as the mesh is refined and showed reliable solutions even for severely distorted meshes. The new elements have the requisite numbers of zero eigenvalues associated with rigid body modes to avoid the spurious zero energy modes. These elements are shown to be applicable to the wide range of plate problems, giving a high accuracy for both thick and thin plates.
Experimental study of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation has been primary research area in dredged soil. However, good quality of the dredged soil and minimum water pollution caused by the pumping of reclaimed soil require intensive study of the flow characteristics of dredged material due to dumping. In this study, continuity and the equilibrium equations for mass flow assuming single phase was derived to simulate mass flow in dredged containment area. To optimize computation and modeling time for three dimensional geometry and boundary conditions, depth integration is applied to governing equations to consider three dimensional topography of the site. Petrov-Galerkin formulation is applied in spatial discretization of governing equations. Generalized trapezoidal rule is used for time integration, and Newton iteration process approximated the solution. DG and CDG technique were used for weighting matrix in discontinuous test function in dredged flow analysis, and numerical stability was evaluated by performed a square slump simulation. A comparative analysis for numerical methods showed that DG method applied to SU / PG formulation gives minimal pseudo oscillation and reliable numerical results.
An arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) finite element method has been developed. The finite element formation is derived and implemented for rigid-viscoplastic materials. The developed computer program is applied to the analysis of axisymmetric square die extrusion, which has many difficulties with updated Lagrangian approach. The results are compared with those from updated Largrangian approach. The results are compared with those from updated Lagrangian finite element program. Updating scheme of time dependent variables and mesh control are also examined.

Analysis of mechanical behavior for a pultruded-wound hollow rod is presented. For this purpose, the pultruded-wound hollow rod is manufactured by the new winder attached to the conventional pultrusion system. And the conventional pultrusion process is newly altered to manufacture pultruded-wound specimens. A computer program, POST II, is modified to perform this study, In the nonlinear finite element formulation, the updated Lagrangian description method based on the second Piolar-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Green strain tensor are used. For the finite element modeling of the composite hollow rod, the eight-node degenerated shell element is utilized. In order to estimate the failure, the maximum stress criterion is adopted to the averaged stress in the each layer of the finite elements. As numerical examples, the behavior of glass/up composite hollow rod is investigated from the initial loading to the final collapse. Present finite element results considering stiffness degradation and stress unload due to failure shows excellent agreement with experiments in the ultimate load, failure and deformations.
Various transition elements are generally used for the effective analysis of a complicated mechanical structure. In this paper, a solid-to-beam transition finite element which connects a continuum element and a $c^1-continuity$ beam element each other is proposed. The shape functions of the transition finite elements, which a 8-noded hexahedral solid element fur 3D analysis and a 4-noded quadrilateral plane element fur 2D analysis are connected to a Euler's beam element, are explicitely formulated. In order to show the effectiveness and convergence characteristics of the proposed transition elements. numerical tests are performed for various examples and their results are compared with those obtained by other methods. As the result of this study. following conclusions are obtained: (1)The proposed transition finite elements show the monotonic convergence characteristics because of having used the compatible displacement folds. (2)As being used the transition element in the finite element analysis, the finite element modelings are more convenient and the analysis results are more accurate because of the formulation characteristies of the Euler's beam element.

The explicit scheme for finite element analysis of sheet metal forming problems has been widely used for providing practical solutions since it improves the convergency problem, memory size and computational time especially for the case of complicated geometry and large element number. The explicit schemes in general use are based on the elastic-plastic modeling of material requiring large computataion time. In the present work, a basic formulation for rigid-plastic explicit finite element analysis of plain strain sheet metal forming problems has been proposed. The effect of some basic parameters involved in the dynamic analysis has been studied in detail. Thus, the effective ranges of parameters have been proposed for numerical simultion by the rigid-plastic explicit finite element method. A direct trial-and-error method is introduced to treat contact and friction. In computation, sheet material is assumed to possess normal anisotropy and rigid-plastic workhardening characteristics. In order to show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed explicit scheme, computations are carried out for cylindrical punch stretching and the computational results are compared with those by the implicit scheme as well as with a commercial code. The proposed rigid-plastic exlicit finite element method can be used as a robust and efficient computational method for analysis of sheet metal forming.
The paper is concerned with the elasto-plastic and geometrically nonlinear analysis of shell structures using an improved degenerated shell element. In the formulation of the element stiffness, the combined use of three different techniques was made. They are; 1) an enhanced interpolation of transverse shear strains in the natural coordinate system to overcome the shear locking problem ; 2) the reduced integration technique in in-plane strains to avoid the membrane locking behavior ; and 3) selective addition of the nonconforming displacement modes to improve the element performances. This element is free of serious shear/membrane locking problems and undesirable compatible/commutable spurious kinematic deformation modes. In the formulation for plastic deformation, the concept of a layered element model is used and the material is assumed von Mises yield criterion. An incremental total Lagrangian formulation is presented which allows the calculation of arbitrarily large displacements and rotations. The resulting non-linear equilibrium equations are solved by the Netwon-Raphson method combined with load or displacement increment. The versatility and accuracy of this improved degenerated shell element are demonstrated by solving several numerical examples.

A Hybrid Finite Element Method(HFEM) is applied to solve the electrormagnetic scattering from multi-layered dielectric cylinders. An unbounde region is divided into local boundary regions where a practical differential equation solution is obtained, with the remaining unbounded region represented by a boundary integral equation. If sources, media inhomogeneities, and anisotropies are local, a surgace may be defined to enclose them. Therefore the integral region so defined is bounded, and differential techniques may be used there. Also, in the re- maining unbounded region a boundary integral equation may be formulated using only a simple free - space green's function. Therefore, The local boundary is represented by a boundary - value problem with boundary conditions and solved by the finite element method. The advantage of the proposed method is simple and efficient in the work of electromagnetic scattering. The validity of the results have been verified by comparing results of other method(boundary element method). Examples has been presented to calculate the scattered fields of lossy dielectric cylinders of arbitray cross section.
