The wide range of the Freshmen English placement test scores implies the necessity of differentiating classes. However without a careful and detailed plan, there could be trial and error which would cause harmful and complicated troubles to students. This paper will report a case of grouping Freshmen for English classes at the Engineering College of a provincial university. The main procedures include preparing and executing the placement test, grouping classes, preparing and executing a common final test, preparing grading policy, and reporting. Each procedure is going to be explained and evaluated to improve the quality of English classes and the ability of students at the Engineering College.

This study aims to examine how the use of Padlet, an online platform, affects students' English writing anxiety and English writing strategy in online college English writing classes. A total of 64 college students participated in the study and completed the survey including English writing anxiety, English writing strategy and demographic information. For the study, we divided participants into 2 groups, experimental group using Padlet for their writing tasks and control group using college e-learning during a semester. The results showed that students using Padlet used more writing strategies than the students using college e-learning platform. The use of Padlet, however, was not statistically significant on writing anxiety. English writing anxiety was differed by English level, but decreased at the end of semester regardless of English level. The results imply that Padlet is a useful online learning tool for English learners to actively use English writing strategies and even for learners with low English writing proficiency.

The current study aims to investigate the relationship between working memory capacity, vocabulary size, and listening competence of Korean EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners. 30 English education majors from a university in Korea were recruited. The backward digit span and the operation span tasks were used to measure the participants' working memory capacity, while the Listening Vocabulary Level Test (LVLT) and the Michigan English Test (MET) were employed to measure their vocabulary size and listening proficiency in English, respectively. The correlational analyses revealed that the bigger one's working memory storage was, the better the person processed incoming input. However, no statistically significant correlation was found between working memory capacity, English vocabulary size, and listening proficiency, possibly due to the small sample size and the homogeneous subjects.

The study explores the kinds of emotions freshmen in South Korea universities experience. Specifically, the study examines their emotional experiences on level-differentiated classes, team-teaching by native speakers and Korean professors, and communicative activities. 327 freshmen participated in the survey based on 'Academic Emotions Questionnaire (AEQ)' and the statistical results are as follows: Firstly, research showed that the participants in advanced classes feel higher negative emotions such as 'worries' and 'boredom' than those of beginner and intermediated classes (P < .05). Secondly, participants feel higher level of 'fun', 'satisfaction' and lower level for 'boredom' in the native speaker classes than those of Korean professors (P < .001). Thirdly, participants feel games are the most 'fun' and 'satisfying', while presentations are viewed as the most 'worrying' and 'boring' among the communicative activities (P < .001). Finally, the pedagogical implications and suggestions are discussed.

본 연구는 영어 단어 재인 과정에서 나타나는 한국인의 어휘 수준과 의미 수준 양상을 알아보기 위해 실시되었다 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 세 종류의 실험을 시행하였는데, 첫 번째 실험에서는 한국어 처리 기제와 영어 처리 기제의 독립 여부를 알아보기 위하여 한국어로는 여러 의미를 갖지만 영어로는 한 가지 의미만을 가지는 영어단어를 점화 자극으로 하고, 한국어와는 관련된 의미를 갖지만 영어와는 무관련한 한국어 단어를 목표 자극으로 사용하여(예, bridge-팔)언어간 의미 점화 어휘판단 과제를 시행하였다. 두 번째 실험에서는 비교적 개념 구조가 한국어와 영어에서 유사하다고 생각되어지는 외래어를 자극으로 사용하여 언어간(예, elevator-승강기), 언어 내(예, 엘리베이터-승강기) 어휘판단과제를 실시하였다. 연구 결과 첫 번째 실험에서는 유의미한 점화효과가 나타나지 않았고, 두 번째 실험에서는 언어간에는 SOA에 따라서 결과가 달랐고, 언어 내에는 촉진적 점화효과가 나타났다 이러한 결과는 영어의 일반 어휘에 대한 의미 표상 체계는 독립적으로 존재하였고, 외래어와 같이 특수한 어휘에 대해서는 다른 표상 체계를 갖고 있는 것으로 나타났다

해사영어는 SMCP(표준해사통신용어)를 기반으로 하는 특수목적영어의 한 분야로 콘텐츠 개발을 비롯한 학습과 훈련을 지원할 수 있는 해사영어훈련기관을 통해 효과적인 학습과 훈련이 제공되어 진다면 교육생을 단기간에 그 구사 능력을 상당한 수준에 이르게 할 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 우리나라 해양분야의 국제 경쟁력을 제고하고 새로운 일자리 창출을 위해 필수적인 해양산업 종사자들의 영어구사 능력개발을 위한 해사영어훈련센터(METC)의 필요성과 설립방안을 제시한다.

English stress plays such a critical role in understanding spoken English words that its misplacement can lead to a breakdown of communication. Korean learners of English, whose native language is known to lack this feature, are expected to have some difficulty acquiring this English prosodic system. This study explored how Korean is different from English in manifesting prominence at the word level and how the interlanguage of Korean learners of English is dissimilar to both languages in that regard. Four polysyllabic English loanwords in Korean and their English source words were used as stimuli. Ten native English speakers read the English source words while ten Korean learners of English read the English loan words first and then the English source words. The analysis of 120 speech samples revealed that Korean words did not have any salient syllable realized by all stress features: duration, amplitude, and F0. On the contrary, English words had syllables with relative prominence, which was consistently manifested by all the features. Interestingly, in realizing English stress, the interlanguage of the Korean English learners bore more resemblance to that of English than that of their native language.

This study explored the lexical sophistication features to distinguish the group membership of English proficiency, using the automatic analysis program of lexical sophistication. A total of 600 essays written by 300 Korean college students were extracted from the ICNALE (International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English) corpus and a discriminant function analysis was performed using SPSS program. Results showed that the lexical features to distinguish three groups of English proficiency are SUBTLEXUS frequency content words, age of acquisition content words, lexical decision mean reaction time function words, and hypernymy verbs. High-level Korean students used frequent content words from SUBTLEXUS corpus to a lesser degree and produced more sophisticated words that can be learned at a later age and take longer reaction time in lexical decision task, and more concrete verbs.

세계인구 60억중 17억이 영어를 사용하고 있으며 유럽연합시민은 절반 이상이 영어를 구사할 수 있다고 한다. 새 천년 세계화시대에는 영어를 자유롭게 구사하지 못하면 세계인들과의 경쟁에서 패배할 것은 불보듯 뻔한 일이다. 그래서 우리 KAIST는 학생들의 영어실력 향상과 세계적 수준의 대학으로 발돋움하기 위해 99학년부터 전체강좌의 15%를 영어로 진행하고 외국인 학생을 적극 유치하고 있다. 영어에서 해방되면 국제인으로서의 능력을 발휘하여 우리나라 과학기술의 발전에도 큰 밑거름이 될 것이기 때문이다.
