  • This study is based on the problem that most middle school students cannot recognize the generality of geometrical theorems even after having proved them. By considering this problem from the point of view of empirical verification, the particularity of geometrical representations, and the role of geometrical variables, we suggest that some experiences in dynamic geometry environment (DGE) can help students to recognize the generality of geometrical theorems. That is, this study aims to observe students' cognitive changes related to their recognition of the generality and to provide some educational implications by making students experience some geometrical explorations in DGE. To do so, we selected three middle school students who couldn't recognize the generality of geometrical theorems although they completed their own proofs for the theorems. We provided them exploratory activities in DGE, and observed and analyzed their cognitive changes. Based on this analysis, we discussed the effects of DGE on studensts' recognition of the generality of geometrical theorems.

  • The purpose of this study is to survey mathematics teacher's cognition of proof along with their proof forms of expression and proof ability, and to explore the relationship between their proof scheme and teaching practice. This study shows that mathematics teachers tend to regard proof as a deduction from assumption to conclusion and that they prefer formal proof with mathematical symbols. Mathematics teachers also recognize that prof is an important area in school mathematics but they reveal poor understanding of teaching methods of proof. Teachers tend to depend on the proof style employed in mathematics textbooks. This study demonstrates that a proof scheme is a major factor of determining the teaching method of proof.

  • Theorema system is built on top of Mathematica to automate deductive reasoning processes as the combination of computer algebra system and deductive system. Theorema system that was developed at RISC in Austria provides three modes based on rewriting techniques; computation, problem solving and proving. This paper shows how the computation mode of Theorema can simulate Derive part for TI-92 graphic calculators to produce TI-92 manuals. Moreover, it also describes how such manuals can be converted to web-based learning materials via Java servlet.

  • In this paper, we investigate and analysis high school students' generalization of cosine rule using analogy, and we study teaching and learning methods improving students' analogical thinking ability to improve mathematical thinking process. When students can reproduce what they have learned through inductive reasoning process or analogical thinking process and when they can justify their own mathematical knowledge through logical inference or deductive reasoning process, they can truly internalize what they learn and have an ability to use it in various situations.

  • One of the education purpose of the section "Figures" in the eighth grade is to develop students' deductive reasoning ability, which is basic and essential for living in a democratic society. However, most or middle school students feel much more difficulty or even frustration in the study of formal arguments for geometric situations than any other mathematical fields. It is owing to the big gap between inductive reasoning in elementary school education and deductive reasoning, which is not intuitive, in middle school education. Also, it is very burden for students to describe geometric statements exactly by using various appropriate symbols. Moreover, Usage of the same symbols for angle and angle measurement or segments and segments measurement makes students more confused. Since geometric relations is mainly determined by the measurements of geometric objects, students should be able to interpret the geometric properties to the algebraic properties, and vice verse. In this paper, we first compare and contrast inductive and deductive reasoning approaches to justify geometric facts and relations in school curricula. Convincing arguments are based on experiment and experience, then are developed from inductive reasoning to deductive proofs. We introduce teaching methods to help students's understanding for deductive reasoning in the textbook by using stepwise visualization materials. It is desirable that an effective proof instruction should be able to provide teaching methods and visual materials suitable for students' intellectual level and their own intuition.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze geometrical level and the justification process in the proofs of construction by mathematically gifted elementary students. Justification is one of crucial aspect in geometry learning. However, justification is considered as a difficult domain in geometry due to overemphasizing deductive justification. Therefore, researchers used construction with which the students could reveal their justification processes. We also investigated geometrical thought of the mathematically gifted students based on van Hieles's Theory. We analyzed intellectual of the justification process in geometric construction by the mathematically gifted students. 18 mathematically gifted students showed their justification processes when they were explaining their mathematical reasoning in construction. Also, students used the GSP program in some lessons and at home and tested students' geometric levels using the van Hieles's theory. However, we used pencil and paper worksheets for the analyses. The findings show that the levels of van Hieles's geometric thinking of the most gifted students were on from 2 to 3. In the process of justification, they used cut and paste strategies and also used concrete numbers and recalled the previous learning experience. Most of them did not show original ideas of justification during their proofs. We need to use a more sophisticative tasks and approaches so that we can lead gifted students to produce a more creative thinking.

  • A deductive database consists of facts being the extensional database and rules being the intensional database. Because of the difficulty of evaluating rules, many parallel evaluation algorithms for rules have been presented. But we have not gotten an acceptable result. This paper proposes a new methodology to evaluate proof-theoretic meaning of the linear recursion rule which contains transitive dependency by using a shared-nothing parallel architecture. As first, we prove that there exists the equivalent expression for a linear recursion rule, design the algorithm for evaluating the linear recursion rule based on the equivalent expression, and finally analyse performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • This study analyzes on the reasoning in the process of justification and mathematical problem solving in our primary mathematics textbooks. In our analyses, we found that the inductive reasoning based on the paradima-tic example whose justification is founnded en a local deductive reasoning is the most important characteristics in our textbooks. We also found that some propositions on the properties of various quadrangles impose a deductive reasoning on primary students, which is very difficult to them. The inductive reasoning based on enumeration is used in a few cases, and analogies based on the similarity between the mathematical structures and the concrete materials are frequntly found. The exposition based en a paradigmatic example, which is the most important characteristics, have a problematic aspect that the level of reasoning is relatively low In Miyazaki's or Semadeni's respects. And some propositions on quadrangles is very difficult in Piagetian respects. As a result of our study, we propose that the level of reasoning in primary mathematics is leveled up by degrees, and the increasing levels are following: empirical justification on a paradigmatic example, construction of conjecture based on the example, examination on the various examples of the conjecture's validity, construction of schema on the generality, basic experiences for the relation of implication.

  • The development of recent Mathematical Logic is mostly originated in Hilbert's Proof Theory. The purpose of the plan so called Hilbert's Program lies in the formalization of mathematics by formal axiomatic method, rescuing classical mathematics by means of verifying completeness and consistency of the formal system and solidifying the foundations of mathematics. In 1931, the completeness encounters crisis by the existence of undecidable proposition through the 1st Theorem of G?del, and the establishment of consistency faces a risk of invalidation by the 2nd Theorem. However, relative of partial realization of Hilbert's Program still exists as a fruitful research program. We have tried to bring into relief through Curry-Howard Correspondence the fact that Hilbert's program serves as source of power for the growth of mathematical constructivism today. That proof in natural deduction is in truth equivalent to computer program has allowed the formalization of mathematics to be seen in new light. In other words, Hilbert's program conforms best to the concept of algorithm, the central idea in computer science.
