GNP-CNT 하이브리드 탄소 소재를 이용한 Supercapacitor에 관한 연구

  • 최근 화석연료 고갈 문제를 해결하기 위해 대체에너지 개발과 다양한 형태의 에너지 개발에 관한 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 특히, supercapacitor는 high energy density, high power density, longer life-time과 같은 특성으로 인해 에너지 저장 소자로 각광 받고 있다. Supercapacitor는 석유를 대체할 수 있으며 이산화탄소 배출이 없는 친환경 에너지인 태양광, 풍력, 수소연료전지 등의 신재생에너지 저장장치로써 큰 비중을 차지한다. Supercapacitor의 종류인 electrical double layer capacitors (EDLCs) 는 전극과 전해질 사이에 발생하는 전기 이중층에 축적되는 전하를 이용하여 에너지를 저장하는 반응 메커니즘을 가지며 전극 재료로는 탄소 소재를 사용한다. 탄소 소재는 환경 오염이 적고 가격이 저렴하며 넓은 표면적이라는 장점이 있다. 하지만 기존 탄소 소재는 이러한 장점을 가지지만 supercapacitor로써의 효율이 좋지 않게 나온다. 이런 문제를 개선하기 위하여 그래핀 나노플레이트(Graphene nanoplate, GNP) 위에 직접 탄소나노튜브(Carbon nanotube, CNT)를 성장 시킴으로써 GNP-CNT 하이브리드 탄소 소재를 제조하여 전극으로 사용하였다. 이 GNP-CNT 하이브리드 탄소 소재는 다차원 구조를 가짐으로써 기존 탄소 소재들보다 분산이 잘되고 전해질과의 작용하는 비표면적이 넓다. 전극을 제작하여 Cyclic voltammetry(CV)와 galvano를 측정한 결과는 기존 탄소나노튜브보다 5배 정도의 정전용량(Capacitance)를 가졌다. 이 전극의 구조적 특성을 관찰하기 위해 SEM, TEM 등을 측정하였다.

Electrochemical Characteristics of Home-Made Bipolar Plate and Its Relationship with Fuel Cell Performance (탄소성형 Bipolar Plate의 전기화학적 특성과 연료전지 성능 비교)

  • The effect of physico-electrochemical properties of carbon bipolar plate(BPP) on hydrogen and formic acid fuel cell performance has been investigated. BPP made of conventional graphite and carbon fiber composite were compared with the factors of interfacial contact resistance (ICR), corrosion behaviours, and hydrophobicity. Among them, the ICR of carbon fiber composite BPP has 50% higher than conventional graphite and the surface of carbon fiber composite BPP became rougher due to weaker corrosion resistance. Fuel cell performance was strongly dependent of ICR value of carbon bipolar plate.

  • Reduction of CO2 emissions is an important issue in the steel industry, and the research on carbon materials that can partially replace cokes is necessary to reduce CO2 emissions. Meanwhile, the biomass fuel contains some fixed carbon, and the carbon content in the biomass can be increased by torrefaction. As one of the biomass fuels, coffee grounds contains about 55 mass% of carbon, and its about 270,000 tons are landfilled and incinerated annually in Korea. In addition, research on the recycling process due to the increase in annual coffee consumption is required. In this study, the effect of temperature on the concentration of fixed carbon in coffee grounds was investigated during torrefaction. Moreover, the effects of mixing ratio of torrefied coffee grounds with cokes on the carbon concentration and dissolution efficiency in the metal sample were investigated.

A Study on Reactions of Carbon-Carbonate Mixture at Elevated Temperature: As an Anode Media of SO-DCFC (SO-DCFC 적용을 위한 카본블랙-탄산염 혼합 매개체의 고온 반응 특성에 대한 연구)

  • A direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) generates electricity directly by converting the chemical energy in coal. In particular, a DCFC system with a solid oxide electrolyte and molten carbonate anode media has been proposed by SRI. In this system, however, there are conflicting effects of temperature, which enhances the ion conductivity of the solid electrolyte and reactivity at the electrodes while causing a stability problem for the anode media. In this study, the effect of temperature on the stability of a carbon-carbonate mixture was investigated experimentally. TGA analysis was conducted under either nitrogen or carbon dioxide ambient for $Li_2CO_3$, $K_2CO_3$, and their mixtures with carbon black. The composition of the exit gas was also monitored during temperature elevation. A simplified reaction model was suggested by considering the decomposition of carbonates and the catalyzed Boudouard reactions. The suggested model could well explain both the measured weight loss of the mixture and the gas formation from it.

  • 지구 온난화 문제의 심각성이 대두되면서 이산화탄소 저감 기술에 대한 관심이 증폭되고 있다. 가장 이상적인 방법은 탄소가 포함되지 않은 청정 재생 에너지원이지만, 에너지 공급 규모 면에서 보면 근미래에도 화석 연료가 에너지 수요에 대한 주요 공급원으로 남아있을 것이라는 의견이 지배적이다. 많은 화석 연료 중 천연가스는 탄소 배출량이 가장 적은 청정 연료로 지난 10년간 수요가 폭발적으로 증가해왔다. 이를 고려해볼 때 탄소 배출량이 적은 천연가스를 생산하면서 이산화탄소를 격리 시킬 수 있는 기술은 매우 매력적이다. 본 연구에서는 심해저의 메탄 하이드레이트로 부터 천연가스를 생산하는 기술로서 이산화탄소와 질소의 혼합 가스를 사용하는 기술 개발의 일환으로 혼합 가스에 의한 메탄 하이드레이트 해리 속도를 $^{13}C$ NMR을 이용해 측정한 결과를 제시하고자 한다.

  • 석유, 석탄 및 천연가스와 같은 일차화석연료(一次化石燃料)와 그 제품(製品)들의 사용에 따르는 이산화탄소배출량을 줄이는 방법의 하나로 거론되고 있는 탄소세와 에너지세의 부과가 2000년도 한국경제의 수출입(輸出入)에 미치는 영향을 평가하기 위하여 계산가능한 일반균형모형을 이용하여 분석하였다. 거시계량모형(巨視計量模型)에 의하여 예측된 2000년도 한국경제의 국내총생산(國內總生産)과 계산가능한 일반균형모형(一般均衡模型)의 이론적(理論的) 구조(構造)를 이용하여 2000년도 한국경제의 미시구조(微視購造)를 결정한 후 이로부터 계산된 이산화탄소배출량을 5%와 10% 줄이는 탄소세와 에너지세를 부과하였을 때의 경제적 효과를 계산하였다. 화석연료에 부과되는 탄소세와 에너지세는 수출입구조에 유사한 효과를 가져오는 것으로 평가되나 산업별로 약간의 차이를 가져오는 것으로 계산되었으며 이산화탄소감축율이 증가함에 띠라 국내총생산변화와 동등변동(同等變動)으로 측정된 경제적 비용이 점증하는 것으로 평가되었다.

An Experimental Guide to Predictable Fuel Cell Operations by Controlling External Gas Supply (외부 유입 가스 조절을 통한 연료전지 구동 성능 안정화)

  • Fuel cell is one of the promising electrochemical technologies enabling power production with various fuel sources such as hydrogen, hydrocarbon and even solid carbon. However, its long-term performance is often unstable and unpredictable. In this work, we observed that gasification-driven hydrocarbons were the culprit of unpredictability. Therefore, we controlled the presence of hydrocarbons with the help of external gas supply, i.e. argon and carbon dioxide, and suggested the optimal amount of carbon dioxide required for predictable fuel cell operations. Our optimization strategy was based upon the following observations; carbon dioxide can work as both an inert gas and a fuel precursor, depending on its amount present in the reactor. When deficient, the carbon dioxide cannot fully promote the reverse Boudouard reaction that produces carbon monoxide fuel. When overly present, the carbon dioxide works as an inert gas that causes fuel loss. In addition, the excessive carbon monoxide may result in coking on the catalyst surface, leading to the decrease in the power performance.

Improved Performance of Direct Carbon Fuel Cell by Catalytic Gasification of Ash-free Coal (무회분탄 연료의 촉매 가스화에 의한 직접탄소연료전지의 성능 향상)

  • Carbon-rich coal can be utilized as a fuel for direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC). However, left-behind ash after the electrochemical oxidation may hinder the electrochemical reactions. In this study, we produced ash-free coal (AFC) by thermal extraction and then tested it as a fuel for DCFC. DCFC was built based on solid oxide electrolyte and the electrochemical performance of AFC mixed with $K_2CO_3$ was compared with AFC only. Significantly enhanced power density was found by catalytic steam gasification of AFC. However, an increase of the power density by catalytic pyrolysis was negligible. This result indicated that a catalyst activated the steam gasification reactions, producing much more $H_2$ and thus increasing the power density, compared to AFC only. Results of a quantitative analysis showed much improved kinetics in AFC with $K_2CO_3$ in agreement with DCFC results. A secondary phase of potassium on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) surface was observed after the cell operation. This probably caused poor long-term behavior of AFC with $K_2CO_3$. A thin YSZ (30 ${\mu}m$ thick) was found to be higher in the power density than 0.9 mm of YSZ.

Numerical Modeling of Anodic Reaction of Carbon-Rich Fuel at Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (탄소연료를 이용하는 고체 산화물 연료전지의 연료극 반응 수치해석)

  • Direct Carbon Fuel Cell(DCFC), unlike gas turbines or engines, is a kind of fuel cell which directly generates electricity by electrochemical reaction from a carbon fuel. The advantages of DCFC are higher efficiency and lower emission in comparison with existing power generation facilities. In this study, the effects of CO and $CO_2$ on theoretical potential are examined using the thermodynamic equilibrium method, and the dependence of product on operating temperature is examined via two dimensional CFD method. As a result, when the reaction of CO production (Boudouard reaction) considered, theoretical potential is higher than that in only $CO_2$ reactions, and its value increases as temperature increases. Two dimensional results of computational fluid dynamics(CFD) confirm that the Boudouard reaction becomes more important to be considered as temperature increases and inert gas affects the equilibrium composition of the Boudouard reaction.

CO Tolerance Improvement of MEA Using Metal Thin Film by Sputtering Method in PEM Fuel Cell (스퍼터링 공정으로 제조된 금속박막을 이용한 고분자전해질 연료전지 막-전극접합체의 일산화탄소에 대한 내구성 연구)

  • When reformer for fuel cell is used, CO in hydrogen gas leads to a seriously decreased membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performance by catalyst poisoning. The effect of CO on performance of modified MEA by sputtering method is studied in this paper. The experimental results show that sputtered Pt and Ru thin film improve a single cell performance of MEA and sputtered metal thin film has a CO tolerance. The air injection process on anode show improved CO tolerance test result. Moreover, Pt, Ru and PtRu thin film by sputtering had influence on the CO tolerance with air injection process.
