  • This study purported to empirically examine joy expression and its cognitive and social contexts in children's play. The following question was asked: 1) What kind(s) of emotional expression(s) can be considered as a defining feature of play? 2) What cognitive/social play contexts are associated with joy expression. 30 children aged 3, 4, and 5 years were observed in terms of the length of each emotional expression at play/nonplay, and at cognitive/social play categories. The findings of this study showed that regardless of children's age and gender only joy expression could be considered as a defining feature of play, and that R&T play and chase games, or associative and cooperative social play were strongly related to joy expression. The findings were discussed in reference with existing assertions and perspectives, emphasizing the importance of joy expression in defining children's play despite of the predominance of interest expression in play. The findings were also discussed in reference with metacommunication functions and social construction of joy, considering cognitive/social contexts of joy. Implications for play researchers and practitioners were described in terms of developing playful learning strategies for childhood. Limitations of this study, and suggestions for further research were also provided.

Methods : Twenty ADHD children participated in this study. To determine inter-rater reliability, two raters was evaluated by Test of Playfulness scores and analyzed Kappa coefficient and total agreement and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results : Total agreement was the range of 75%~95% and the Kappa coefficients was the range of. 45~1.00. Analyzing inter-rater reliability by ICC showed very high reliability: Intrinsic motivation was .96, internal control was .98, suspension of reality was .90, framing was .98, total score was .99. Conclusion : A reliability of Test of Playflness of children with ADHD showed that high. On the basis of this study, it will provide availability for clinical evaluation of children with ADHD, and basic study on the play of children with ADHD.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between level of participation in children's play, empathy ability and coping behavior in mothers of children with disabilities. The study included 94 mothers of children with disabilities and the study was conducted from May 2018 to August 2018 based on the questionnaire about the level of participation in children's play, empathy ability and coping behavior. According to the study, Mothers of children with disabilities actively participate in physical play with their children and have a higher emotional empathy compared to cognitive empathy, and have acted to actively solve the problems for their children. When children have been treated for more than 1 to 2 years, the level of participation in children's play and the coping behavior were the highest. The longer their children's treatment period, the higher the mothers' empathy. The correlation between level of participation in children's play and coping behavior were significant. And empathy and coping behavior had a strong positive linear relationship. These results suggest that there are differences in level of participation in children's play, empathy and coping behavior depending on mothers' of children with disabilities general characteristics and the higher level of mothers' of children with disabilities participation in children's play, the more empathetic they have. When individualized intervention is provided, we look forward to providing professional service that take into account the characteristics of mothers of children with disabilities.

Methods : Through a literature review, the investigation items according to Parten's social play developmental stages were collected. Two Delphi surveys were conducted using 22 expert panels. An understanding of the contents of the preliminary items was determined via parents of preschool children. The evaluation method was established through an expert advisory meeting. Results : Through data collection and the Delphi survey, a total of 89 items were drawn, including 12 unoccupied behaviors, 7 onlooker behaviors, 14 solitary play, 16 parallel play, 17 associative play, and 23 cooperative play items. The average content validity ratio of the Delphi survey was 0.85. The stability was 0.15. The consensus was 0.78. The final preliminary evaluation items comprised a total of 40 items, including 17 for associative play and 23 for cooperative play. Conclusion : An evaluation items that can measure social play in preschool children was developed, and its content validity was verified. It is expected to be used as an evaluation tool in clinical practice.

  • Subjects were 15 teachers and 143 children at 15 child-care centers in Seoul that varied by quality of care. The Child Care Program Observation Scale(Rhee et at., 2003) was employed to observe the quality of the centers. Information on teachers' participation in play was collected by 20 units of observation for each teacher using a rating scale developed by the author. Children's behaviors were observed with time sampling method in 12 categories of play behaviors based on Social and Cognitive Play Scales(Rubin et al., 1978). Children's play behaviors varied by quality of child-care centers and teachers' participation in play. When child-care quality was high, teachers' participated actively in children's play and children showed developmentally appropriate play behaviors.

The summary of this study is as follows. First, children with disabilities significantly reduced their aggressiveness, atrophy, depression, and anxiety, and increased their activity during each session. Second, problem behaviors decreased after the intervention of group play therapy, and there were more decreases in internalization problems than externalization problems. • Participants in this study of the validity and reliability of PIPPS (Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale; Fantuzzo et al., 1998) for Korean children were 248 5-to 6-year - old children and 11 teachers. Instruments included the Peer Rating Scale(PRS; Singleton et al., 1979), Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation (SCBE; LaFreniere & Dumas, 1995), and Preschool Behavior Questionnaire (PBQ; Behar & Stringfield, 1974). The structure of PIPPS resulted in 3 factors, 'play disruption', 'play interaction', and 'play disconnection' with 30 items similar to the original PIPPS factors. Validity was evidenced by inter-correlations among sub-factors and by correlations between PIPPS and criterion measures. PIPPS scores were validated by ratings from PRS, SCBE and PBQ sub-areas scores. Cronbach's a reliability of PIPPS factors ranged from .88 to .92.

The subjects were 150 4-year old children of 29 mixed-age classes in childcare centers of Seoul and Gyeonggi area. The results were as follows; (1) Their play behaviors differed according to their play environment in terms of classroom spaces. Solitary-active play behaviors were more frequently observed in large play spaces than small. Leading participation, voluntary full immersion, and total playfulness scores, on the other hand, correlated positively with group play behavior. (3) In small play spaces, leading participation, voluntary full immersion correlated negatively with reticent behavior, but leading participation correlated positively with group play. In middle play spaces, cognitive flexibility correlated negatively with reticent behavior. In large play spaces, voluntary full immersion correlated negatively with parallel play, but leading participation, cognitive flexibility, expressions of joy, voluntary full immersion, and total playfulness score correlated positively with group play.
