  • The properties of recycled fine aggregates which had different source concrete were examined by mortar test. With higher strength of source concrete, specific gravity of recycled fine aggregate was higher and absorption of recycled fine aggregate was lower due to reduction of the volume of adhered cement paste. The compressive strength and flexible strength of mortar with recycled fine aggregate were affected by the interface boundary of new mortar and the strength of adhered mortar. Strength development of mortar with recycled fine aggregate reduced because recycled fine aggregate become a porous material with the smaller strength of source concrete. The drying shrinkage of mortar was about$800{\sim}2000{\mu}m/m$. It was about 1.5 times than that of mortar with natural fine aggregate. Relative dynamic modulus of elasticity was a similar level with that of mortar with natural fine aggregate.

  • Vicker's hardness and pore size distribution of mortar adhered to the recycled coarse aggregate were tested according to the strength level of original concrete of recycled coarse aggregate to find the change of mortar adhered to the recycled coarse aggregate in cement paste. The strength levels of original concrete of recycled coarse aggregate were 25.5MPa, 41.7MPa and 60.1MPa and the aggregates were used at the state of saturated surface dry condition and oven dry condition. The results of this experimentation indicated that the mean value of Vicker's hardness was increased according to age and strength of original concrete of recycled aggregate. Porosity of $100nm{\sim}10{\mu}m$ size was reduced and porosity of 6nm~100nm size was increased in cement paste.

  • This paper presents a detailed experimental study on the durability properties of mortar matrix made with two kind of recycled fine aggregates(RAA, RAB) and five replacement levels (0, 25, 40, 75 and 100) of the recycled fine aggregates as a partial replacement of natural fine aggregate (NA). The durability properties of mortar matrix was evaluated using compressive strength, chloride ion ingress, sulfate attack and carbonation. The test results indicated that the water absorption and Adhered mortar of the recycled fine aggregate was a major factor controlling durability properties. Hereafter, when using built recycled fine aggregate is expected, appropriate removal Adhered mortar and reasonable replacement ratio of recycled fine aggregates was 25% weight of cement are advised to apply to the concrete materials.

  • This paper presents an experimental study conducted to investigate the effect of recycled fine aggregate (RFA) on the mechanical properties and chloride diffusion behavior of mortar. The test results revealed that the addition of RFA plays an important role in the mechanical properties and pore structures of the investigated mortar specimens as well as chloride diffusion behavior. The mechanical properties such as compressive strength and flexural strength of recycled fine aggregate mortar (RFAM) were gradually decreased as RFA replacement ratio increase. The pore structure of RFAM was examined by permeability tests. The RFAM showed a increment in the permeability according to replacement ratio increase of RFA. But the chloride diffusion coefficient of RFAM was almost same up to 50% replacement ratio of RFA due to a chloride binding phenomenon of RFAM which may compensate the higher permeability of RFAM.

  • In this study, we analyzed the problems of existing construction waste shredding technology to diagnose the problems of low quality recycled aggregates and to develop a new mortar peeling technique to produce high-quality recycled coarse aggregate for concrete. The purpose of this study is to verify the effectiveness of mortar peeling technique by doing simulation prior to on-site application and to check the quality properties of recycled coarse aggregate produced by applying a mortar peeling technique. We manufactured and installed High speed Rotating Grinder on-site and analyzed the correlation between mortar adhesion amount, dry density and water absorption rate of recycled coarse aggregate.

  • The basic properties and volume stability of the ultra-rapid setting cement mortar containing low-quality recycled aggregate with a higher water absorption and lower specific gravity than relavent Korea Standard were experimentally confirmed. The mix proportion without recycled aggregate followed that of the general repair mortar used in the fields. 15% and 30% of the fine aggregate was substituted by the recycled aggregate in the mixtures with and without latex emulsion, and properties and characteristics of the mortar including mortar flow, setting time, compressive and flexural strength, and linear deformation under sealed and unsealed conditions were evaluated. It was confirmed that when low-quality recycled aggregate was used by 30%, there were risks of decrease in the early-age strength by up to 50% within 24h and increases in drying shrinkage by up to 2 times for 2 weeks compared to the the mixtures without the recycled aggregate.

  • This study was conducted to confirm the applicability of recycled aggregates as aggregates for structural concrete as a way to respond to the shortage of natural aggregates. The two-stage mixing approach developed by Tam et al. is known to be a method that can improve the mechanical performance of recycled aggregate concrete without the installation of new additional facilities. In this work, modified version of two stage mixing approach, which was used in our earlier work, was introduced to prepare mortar specimens with recycled fine aggregate, and the compressive strength and fire resistance were compared to mortar mixed with normal mixing approach. According to the experimental results from mortar with recycled fine aggregate, the use of two-stage mixing approach was found to be more effective than normal mixing approach for compressive strength development. In addition, the residual strengths of the mortar with two-stage mixing approach was higher than mortar made of normal mixing approach after exposure to 600 and 900 ℃. It is possible to manufacture high-performance cement composites with recycled fine aggregates through the active use of the two-stage mixing approach.

  • In general, the waste concrete is simply crushed and reused as a recycled aggregate at a low value application such as back filling material. It because that the quality of recycled aggregate is lower than one of natural aggregate due to the insufficient liberation of aggregate and cement mortar. So in this study, the liberation characteristics of liberation of aggregate and cement mortar is analyzed to investigate the limitation of conventional crushing stage at waste concrete processing circuit. In this process, thermal treatment method is evaluated for the enhancement of liberation. From test results, the preferential breakage along the grain boundary is not accomplished by the conventional crushers. It leads a low quality of recycled aggregate and a fracture of aggregate. To solve these problems, gentle breakage is used as a breakage mechanism to induce preferential breakage along the grain boundary. The recycled aggregate produced from the free fall test, which adopts a gentle breakage, shows a better liberation characteristics and a higher quality.

  • As for a possibility of using high volume of recycled aggregate in concrete mixture, recycled fine one which is known to be worse in quality and hard to control was selected and investigated in terms of performance of mortar as the replacement ratio to natural fine aggregate was changed. As a result of test, it is found that grade of recycled fine aggregate was beyond standard one and fineness modulus of that itself was increased in compare to natural one. In case of making mortar with recycled fine aggregate, disadvantageous results such as less fluidity and air content including the increase of dry shrinkage were shown but strengths of mortar were comparable to the one making with natural aggregate, which means that planned strength of common concrete structure can be achieved by controlling W/C and the amount of chemical admixture, and also that large amount of recycled fine aggregate is applicable to the precast concrete products generally free to the amount of water.

  • In this study, the different unit cement content by the ratio of water absorption and water-cement ratio are applied to examine the properties of the concrete used the aggregate recycled by the crushing treatment. According to the experimental results, in the mix of low strength and high water-cement ratio, both of the compressive strength is almost equal in the concrete using the recycled aggregate by the crushing treatment and the concrete using broken stones. It means that the recycled aggregate has the low effect of the amount of bonded mortar. But, in the mix of high strength and low water-cement ratio, the concrete using the recycled aggregate by the crushing treatment has 40% less of the compressive strength than that using broken stones by the effect of the amount of bonded mortar. On the other hand, after 8 weeks, the dry shrinkage of the recycled aggregate with 7% of the ratio of water absorption doubles that of the broken stones with 1% ($-350{\times}10^{-6}$), in other words $-700{\times}10^{-6}$. Thus, the dry shrinkage should be prior to any other conditions in recycling waste concrete for the aggregate for concrete. When the recycled aggregate with 3% of the ratio of water absorption is used, the compressive strength of the rich mix concrete ($450kg/m^3$ of the unit cement content) is equivalent to that of the concrete using broken stones, while in using the recycled aggregate with 7% of the ratio of water absorption, the rich mix concrete has 7% lower compressive strength than the concrete using broken stones. But, the compressive strength of the ordinary mix concrete ($350kg/m^3$ of the unit cement content) is far lower than that using broken stones.
