This study investigates how the GSP helps gifted and talented students understand geometric principles and concepts during the inquiry process in the generalization of the internal triangle, and how the students logically proceeded to visualize the content during the process of generalization. Four mathematically gifted students were chosen for the study. They investigated the pattern between the area of the original triangle and the area of the internal triangle with the ratio of each sides on m:n respectively. Digital audio, video and written data were collected and analyzed. From the analysis the researcher found four results. First, the visualization used the GSP helps the students to understand the geometric principles and concepts intuitively. Second, the GSP helps the students to develop their inductive reasoning skills by proving the various cases. Third, the lessons used GSP increases interest in apathetic students and improves their mathematical communication and self-efficiency.

In this study, I hoped to reveal the understanding of pre-service elementary teachers about proportional reasoning and the traits of proportional reasoning strategy used by pre-service elementary teachers. The results of this study are as follows. Pre-service elementary teachers should deal with various proportional reasoning tasks and make a conscious effort to analyze proportional reasoning task and investigate various proportional reasoning strategies through teacher education program. It is necessary that pre-service elementary teachers supplement the lacking tasks such as qualitative reasoning and distinction between proportional situation and non-proportional situation. Finally, It is suggested to preform the future research on teachers' errors and mis-conceptions of proportional reasoning.
Even though patterns and correspondence serve a fundamental basis of function for elementary students, there has been lack of research in this field. This study explored prior studies to extract the key instructional elements on how to teach patterns and correspondence. This study then analyzed the unit of 'patterns and correspondence' in the mathematics textbooks in terms of four key instructional elements (i.e., relation to real-life contexts, diversity of pattern tasks, exploration for a correspondence relationship, and teaching variables). The results of this study showed that topics dealing with patterns and correspondence were represented with relation to real-life contexts but diversity of pattern tasks and exploration for a correspondence relationship were needed to be further considered in the textbooks. Another noticeable result was that teaching variables was not explicitly addressed in the textbooks. Based on these results, this study provides textbook writers with implications on what to further consider in dealing with patterns and correspondence.
This study aims to explore how Korean middle-school mathematics textbooks on functions provide students an opportunity-to-learn [OTL]. For this purpose, we investigate 3 textbooks in terms of mathematics content and practice, the level of cognitive demands of mathematical tasks, types of student responses, types of context-based tasks, and connections among the tasks. The findings from the data analysis suggest as follows: a) an opportunity-to-learn to connect procedures to functional concepts and new ideas of functions to the existing one is very limited; b) the textbooks seem to provide students an OTL to understand functions as definitions, rules and conventions and to experience repeatedly procedural executions through worked examples and mathematics tasks; c) students may not experience to explain their own ideas/thinking by using mathematical sentence or justify their own cognitive processes; and d) students can be exposed to get a sense of mathematics as a set of fragmented and isolated facts or procedures, rather than to encourage to expand and deepen their understanding of functions.
In this paper, we show how dynamic manipulation environments can be integrated in the mathematics curriculum by presenting some pedagogical tasks manufactured by dynamic manipulation. These examples are composed to produce meaningful definitions through inductive experiments, to strengthen the thinking ability on continuity through the visualization, to make mathematics through investigation and finding, and to strengthen the ability of posing and generalizing problems. Through these examples students can observe the process of how mathematics is being invented, and they can experience how to solve mathematical problems using physical experiments in dynamic manipulation environments. When integration of dynamic manipulation into the teaching and learning of mathematics is applied, some difficulties can come out. To resolve such difficulties, a teacher must play the role of a co-worker of students in addition to the role of a scaffolder, coach, or close listener.

Mathematical formal justification may be seen as a bridge towards the proof. By requiring the mathematically gifted students to prove the generalized patterned task rather than the implementation of deductive justification, may present challenges for the students. So the research questions are as follow: (1) What are the difficulties the mathematically gifted elementary students may encounter when formal justification were to be shifted into a generalized form from the given patterned challenges? (2) How should the teacher guide the mathematically gifted elementary students' process of transition to formal justification? The conclusions are as follow: (1) In order to implement a formal justification, the recognition of and attitude to justifying took an imperative role. (2) The students will be able to recall previously learned deductive experiment and the procedural steps of that experiment, if the mathematically gifted students possess adequate amount of attitude previously mentioned as the 'mathematical attitude to justify'. In addition, we developed the process of questioning to guide the elementary gifted students to formal justification.
The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the effects of physical manipulative and exploratory geometry software on the spatial sense for 5th grade elementary school students in learning nets. For this purpose, ton experimental group used Geofix, an operational learning tool, and the experimental group used Cabri 3D, an exploratory geometry software to learn the nets of solids. The comparison group was learned by worksheet only without any manipulative or software. Spatial sense tests were conducted before and after to determine the level, and eye tracking were used to analyze the strategies of students in solving nets problems. As a result, it was confirmed that the using Geofix group was the most effective for the spatial sense, and Cabri 3D could also be a good tool for learning the nets of solids. In addition, after learning the nets of solids, the analytical strategy, which was the most effective strategy for students' solving strategies, increased. In the process of solving spatial tasks such as the spatial sense tasks, eye tracking technology become a very useful tool for exploring students' strategies, so it is expected that objective and useful data will be collected through more active use in the future.
A polygon is one of the main subjects of the geometry curriculum that is handled widely from the second-grade elementary school to middle school. In this research, we analyze second-grade middle school students' conceptions of the polygon that are revealed in the process of seeking the definition and the area of it given in a lattice worksheet.
The purpose of this study is to develop teaching and learning materials for the mathematics project inquiry subject. Since this subject is newly opened in the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum, there are no textbooks and materials. Hence it is required to help teachers plan lessons of the mathematics project inquiry subject. For this study, developing directions and objectives are established. Ten hours of lesson plan and teaching and learning materials are also developed for the two themes of 'big data' and 'industrial mathematics'. Suitability and validity of the developed material are verified positively from a survey of 8 teachers and 2 professionals. The detailed result findings are as follows. First, teaching and learning notes are suggested for each lesson plan. They are comprised of building inquiry plan, doing inquiry, summarizing results, and presentation. Second, driving questions of each theme are developed as "What is the big data and where is it used for ?" and "How various is the use of the industrial mathematics ?" respectively. Third, poster-types of each project product are developed. Fourth, three inquiry activity sheets and examples which are theme selection, inquiry plan, and group activity are developed. Fifth, 4 assessment sheets of self, peer, group, and teacher-use are developed.
