  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of taking a 「Theory of mathematical education」 on the mathematical beliefs of pre-service teachers. For this theory of mathematical education was run in the first semester of 2021 and 2022, and the data was collected and analyzed by conducting a mathematical beliefs questionnaire, drawing a mathematics class scenes test, and focus group interviews with participants. According to the results of the study, there was a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results on the 'process of inquiry' of the nature of mathematics and the 'active participation' of mathematics learning in the mathematical belief category of pre-service teachers. In addition, in the image test of mathematics classes, the proportion of the image of the student-centered class increased significantly in the post-test compared to the pre-test, while the proportion of the image of the teacher-centered class decreased significantly. It can be assumed that the various learning opportunities provided in the pre-service mathematics teacher education program promoted the composition of practical knowledge based on propositional knowledge of pre-service teachers, and this series of processes contributed to transforming the mathematical beliefs of pre-service teachers into learner-centered beliefs.

  • Algebraic signs are important on learning and problem solving of algebra. This study investigated the contents of letters and expressions in textbooks by syntactics, semantics and pragmatics, and considered the introduction and extension processes of algebraic signs didactically. We also categorized the signs, and looked into textbook problems in view of semiotic. The result is that textbook is constructed in syntactics and semantics. Finally, the assessment of 7th grade students' competence in syntactics, semantics, syntactics+- semantics, pragmatics, and problem solving shows that students' ability in syntactics and pragmatics Is a predictive variable for algebraic problem solving.

  • This study explores classes for pre-service mathematics teachers. The purpose of this study is to examine the differences between 'non-face-to-face' classes & 'face-to-face' classes, as well as the differences in learning outcomes between these two methods. A Professors' Learning Group was formed to effectively carry out this study. Through this learning group, we shared how to plan and operate the lecture. The subjects of this study are 'non-face-to-face calculus courses & face-to-face calculus courses' and 'non-face mathematics education theory courses & face-to-face mathematics education theory courses." Specifically, in these two pairs of courses, we analyze the differences in course management and the differences in the outcomes of students' assessments. Non-face-to-face classes were planned, developed, implemented and evaluated based on the 'non-face class design model.' The results of this study are as follows: First, we explored the differences between 'non-face-to-face classes/mixed classes' and 'face-to-face classes.' Second, the achievement results in calculus courses were higher in face-to-face classes than in non-face classes. Third, the results of achievements in mathematics education theory courses were higher in mixed classes than in face-to-face classes. Through the results of this study, we hope that the non-face-to-face class capabilities can be improved in pre-service mathematics teacher training.

  • This study explores the characteristics and roles of non-textual elements in secondary mathematics textbooks in the United States and South Korea, using a conceptual framework that I have developed: variety, contextuality, and connectivity. Analyzing five U.S. standards-based textbooks and 13 Korean textbooks, this study shows that although non-textual elements in mathematics textbooks are free of literal language, they exhibit different emphases and reflect assumptions about what is important in learning mathematics and how it can be taught and learned in a particular societal context (Mishra, 1999; Zazkis & Gadowsky, 2001). While there are similar patterns in the use of different types of non-textual elements in textbooks from both countries, different opportunities are provided for students to learn mathematics between the two countries.
