In this study, a finite element formulation based first-order shear deformation theory is developed for non-linear behaviors of laminated composite plates containing matrix cracking. The multi-directional stiffness degradation is developed for adopting the stiffness variation induced from matrix cracking, which is proposed by Duan and Yao. The matrix cracking can be expressed in terms of the variation of material properties, such as Young's modulus, shear modulus and Possion ratio of plates, and sequently it is possible to predict the variation of the local stiffness. Using the assumed natural strain method, the present shell element generates neither membrane nor shear locking behavior. Numerical examples demonstrate that the present element behaves quite satisfactorily either for the linear or geometrical nonlinear analysis of laminated composite plates. The results of laminated composite plates with matrix cracking may be the benchmark test for the non-linear analysis of damaged laminated composite plates.

Thermopiezoelastic snap-through phenomena of piezolaminated plates are investigated by applying an are-length scheme to Newton-Raphson method. Based on the layerwise displacement theory and von Karman strain-displacement relationships, nonlinear finite element formulations are derived for the thermopiezoelastic composite plates. From the static and dynamic viewpoint, nonlinear thermopierzoelastic behavior and vibration characteristicx are stuied for symmetric and eccentric structural models with various piezoelestric actuation modes. Present results show the possibility to enhance the performance, namely thermopiezoelastic snapping, induced by the excessive piezoelectric actuation in the active suppression of thermally buckled large deflection piezolaminated paltes.

Plate buckling is very important design criteria when the ship is composed of high tensile steel plates. In general, the plate element contributes to inplane stiffness against the action of inplane load. If the inplane stiffness of the plating decreases due to buckling including the secondary buckling, the flexural rigidity of the cross section of a ship's hull also decreases. In these cases, the precise estimation of plate's behaviour after buckling is necessary, and geometric nonlinear behaviour of isolated plates is required for structural system analysis. In this connection, the author investigated the geometric nonlinear behaviour of simply supported rectangular plates under uniaxial compression in the longitudinal direction in which the principle of minimum potential energy method is employed. Based on the energy method, elastic large deflection analysis of isolated palate is performed and simple expression are derived to discuss the bifurcation paint type buckling and limit point type buckling.

The performance of antenna reflectors crucially depends on the faceting error of the surface. The force density method (FDM) has been widely used for the form-finding analysis of the cable nets of reflectors. However, after performing form-finding of some cable nets, the effective reflective area will decrease. In addition, nonlinear deformations of the cable can not be achieved by using the FDM. Thus, an effective form-find methodology is proposed in this research. The whole parts of the cable networks are described by the absolute nodal coordinate formulation. The form-finding analysis of the reflector with standard configuration is performed to validate the proposed methodology. The influence of boundary condition changes on the configuration accuracy of the cable net is investigated.
We make a simple electrically controllable linear polarization rotator over $360^{\circ}$ without loss by using a thick ECB(electrically controlled birefringence) liquid crystal cell and a quarter wave plate at 514.5 nm wavelength. Its operating principle can be analyzed and explained by using simple polarization analysis and experimental data. We demonstrate that the degree of polarization of the rotator is 0.964 and the temporal variation for 1 week lies within ${\pm}1$ degree. We can easily solve the problem of nonlinearity of the dependence of the rotational angle of linear polarization on the applied voltage by changing the utilized voltage range or its fitting curve.

In this paper, optimization procedures are presented considering the static and dynamic constraints for laminated composite plate and hybrid laminated composite plate subject to concentrated load on center of the plates. Design variables for this problem are ply angle or ply thickness. Deflection, natural frequency and specific damping capacity are considered as constraints. Using a recursive linear programming method, the nonlinear optimization problems are solved. By introducing the design scaling factor, the number of iterations is reduced significantly. Composite plates could be designed optimally combined with FEM analysis under various conditions. In the optimization procedure, verification for both analysis and design of the laminated composite plates are compared with the results of the others. Various design results are presented for the laminated composite plates and hybrid laminated composite plates.
Radiation therapy is usually using linear accelerator and used X-ray energy is also getting higher. Recently linear accelerators has been developed 3F mode and tracking jaw technology and that was applied for patient therapy. This study aims at measuring photoneutrons depending on the use of 3F and tracking jaw system when radiation is irradiated using a linear accelerator. The generation of photoneutrons of 3F system was 70% smaller than 2F system and that of tracking jaw system was 83% higher than static jaw system. Photoneutron value is relatively low. However, it must be minimized for Photoneutron exposure during radiation therapy.

Deformation of the porous media has influence on performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The stress distributions and deformation of the porous media are major factors for safe and efficient operation in the PEMFC. In this paper, nonlinear contact analysis of air plate and porous media is performed under a working condition to predict the performance characteristics of the air plates. Two kinds of models are suggested for this study. The first porous media model has nonlinear material properties. The second model has nonlinear material properties with contact condition between porous media and air plate. The numerical analysis results of the two models are somewhat different. It is shown that the nonlinear contact analysis is required for the design study of the PEMFC.

Navier's and Finite element solutions based on the first-order shear deformation theory are presented for the analysis of through-thickness functionally graded plates and shells. The functionally graded materials are considered: a sigmoid function is utilized for the mechanical properties through the thickness of the isotropic structure which varies smoothly through the plate and shell thickness. The formulation of a nonlinear 9-node Element-based Lagrangian shell element is presented for the geometrically nonlinear analysis. Natural-coordinate-based strains are used in present shell element. Numerical results of the linear and nonlinear analysis are presented to show the effect of the different top/bottom elastic modulus, loading conditions, aspect ratios and side-to-thickness ratios on the mechanical behaviors. Besides, the result according to the variation of the power-law index of isotropic functionally graded structures is investigated.
