The subjects in this study were 349 dental hygienists in dental hospitals and clinics located in Jeonbuk Province. A self-administered survey was conducted, and the collected data were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: The median of their total scores in job stress was 46.0, and the average of psychosocial stress scores was 23.67. As a result of analyzing their demographic characteristics and psychosocial stress, many of the respondents who were younger, who had less working experience and who drank once or twice a week belonged to the high-risk group of psychosocial stress (p<0.05). Concerning the relationship between job stress and psychosocial stress, many of the respondents who suffered from heavier job stress belonged to the high-risk group of psychosocial stress (p<0.05). The group whose occupational climate was less stressful was 3.6-fold more likely to belong to the high-risk group of psychosocial stress than the other whose workpalce culture was more stressful before the correction of the data, and the former was 3.4-fold more likely to do that than the latter after that. The group whose total score in workplace stress was higher was 2.3-fold more likely to belong to the high-risk group of psychosocial stress than the other whose workplace stress was lower before the correction of the data, and the former was 2.7-fold more likely to do that than the latter after that. Given the findings of the study, the development of job stress management programs is required, and everybody should make sustained self-management efforts to relieve their own stress and try to get rid of it in their own way.

  • This study examined the influence of social support (social support from family, social support from friends), psychological behavioral characteristics (self-esteem, interpersonal dependency, locus of control), and stress on the depression levels of college students. The study subjects were 546 college students in D city. The survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire in October 2015. As a result, the depression levels were significantly higher in the group showing lower family and friends' social support, self-esteem, and locus of control, while it was significantly higher in the group showing higher interpersonal dependency and stress. The depression levels of the subjects showed a negative correlation with family and friends' social support, self-esteem, and locus of control, but a positive correlation with interpersonal dependency and stress. Covariance structure analysis revealed an increase in the depression levels of college students when the awareness of the stress source was higher, and when the awareness of social support or psychological behavioral characteristics was lower. These results suggest that the depression levels of college students would be increased when the social support and psychological behavioral characteristics are low, and when stress is high. In particular, it was influenced much more by stress than other factors. Therefore, to decrease the depression levels of college students, it would be necessary to put efforts to understand their main stress sources and then reduce them.

  • This study conducted a multiple mediation analysis using sub-factors of basic psychological needs (BPNs) as mediators in the relationship between problem gambling and stress of gambling addicts to confirm that BPNs and stress, which affect gambling addiction, may be the result of problem gambling and to find effective intervention strategies. A total of 206 adults gambling addicts were screened by using CPGI. Descriptive statistics, correlation, hierarchical regression, and mediation analysis were conducted. Hierarchical regression analysis results yielded that problem gambling and sub-factors of BPNs were significant predictors of stress when controlling for gender and debt. The sub-factors of BPNs mediated the relationship between problem gambling and stress. These results indicated that BPNs and stress are not only the causes of gambling addiction but also the results from the harmful consequences of gambling addiction. The study supported the possibility of the psychological process of "Deficits of BPNs (of gambling users) → stress (of gambling users) → problem gambling → gambling addiction (of gambling addicts) → problem gambling → Deficits of BPNs (of gambling addicts) → stress (of gambling addicts)" among the variables and provided clinical implications for problem gambling counseling. Lastly, the limitations of this study and suggestions for further study were discussed.
