The influence of parental social support and resiliency of efficacy on stress, depression, and stress management behavior: Comparative analysis of elementary school, middle school and university students (스트레스와 우울에 대한 부모의 사회적 지원, 어려움극복효능감, 스트레스 관리행동의 영향: 초, 중, 대학생 집단을 중심으로)

  • This study examines the influence of parental social support and resiliency of efficacy on stress, depression and stress management behavior. A total of 799 participants (male=386, female=413), consisting of 184 elementary school, 354 middle school, 274 university students completed a questionnaire that included Rhode Island Stress Scale (Horiuchi, Tsuda, Tanaka, Yajima & Tsuda, in press), Stress Management Behavior Scale (Evers, Prochaska, Johnson, Mauriello, Padula & Prochaska, 2006), Becks' Depression Inventory (BDI-II, Beck, Steer & Brown, 1996; CES-D, Radloff, 1977), Resiliency of Efficacy (Bandura, 1995), and Parental Social Support (Kim & Park, 1999). The results of path analysis are as follows. First, resiliency of Efficacy had a direct and negative effect on stress and depression and direct positive effect on stress management. Second, stress management behavior did not have any influence on stress. Third, parental social support had a direct and positive effect on resiliency of efficacy. This pattern of results were found for elementary school, middle school and university students. When depression was measured by CES-D Scale (Center for Epidemiological Study of Depression) parental social support and resiliency of efficacy had a different parental of influence on stress, depression and stress management behavior, pointing out the importance of conducting comparative analysis of various measures of depression.

Converged Influence of the Academic Stress Recognized by Teenagers on Mental Health: Mediating Effect of Parent-Child Communication (청소년이 지각한 학업스트레스가 정신건강에 미치는 융합적 영향: 부모-자녀간의 의사소통의 매개효과)

  • The objective of this study is to verify if the parent-child communication has a mediating effect in the relationship between the academic stress recognized by teenagers and the mental health. To achieve this, this study conducted a survey of teenagers who were attending high schools located in Daegu Metropolitan City and made a final analysis of 234 teenagers in total. To verify the mediating effect of parent-child communication in the relationship between the academic stress recognized by teenagers and the mental health, Baron & Kenny's mediating effect analysis method was conducted and the analytical findings are shown below. First, it appeared that career stress and test stress, among the subfactors of academic stress recognized by teenagers had an influence on mental health. Second, it appeared that parent-child communication played a mediating role in the influence of academic stress on mental health.

  • This research was convergence study conducted to understand the effect that parent-son/daughter communications have on the addiction to smartphones, with stress level, self-control, and self-efficacy as the mediator. The subjects were college students located in J province and K province, and 232 questionnaires were used as the data for analysis. As a result, addiction to smartphones had negative correlations with parent-son/daughter communication, self-control, and self-efficacy and had positive correlations with stress level. In addition, parent-son/daughter communication influenced the degree of addiction to smartphones, with stress level, self-control, and self-efficacy as the mediator. Therefore, in order to reduce college students' addiction to smartphones, programs should be developed specifically and systematically to increase their communication with their parents, and it is necessary to draw up measures to reduce students' stress levels and increase their self-control and self-efficacy levels.

  • This study verified the mediating effect of self-esteem in the interrelationship between caring stress perceived by parents raising children with disabilities during the COVID-19 period and parenting efficacy. This survey study conducted a regression analysis using survey data conducted on 140 parents of disabled children in Y, Jeollanam-do. The main results of the study are as follows. First, it was found that the higher the caring stress of parents of disabled children during the COVID-19 period, the lower the self-esteem. Second, it was found that self-esteem had an mediating effect on the effect of care stress on the parenting efficacy of parents of disabled children. Based on these findings, a convergence practice strategy has been proposed to reduce and improve the care stress of parents of disabled children, and parenthood efficacy at embraces them as part of a new family without discrimination in pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare.

  • This this study was performed to examine the dyadic relationship between mothers and fathers in their value of the child, parenting stress, and parenting attitude. After providing the basic data to understand the parental interaction patterns of parenting attitudes. A total of 1,542 couples from the 6th year Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) were included and analyzed using SPSS 18.0, AMOS 18.0. Thus, the value of the child was higher in fathers than in mothers; however, parenting stress and parenting attitude were higher in mothers than in fathers. There were positive correlations among value of child, parenting stress, and parenting attitude. Moreover, the parents' value of the child shows an actor effect in parenting stress. Moreover, the value of the child and parenting stress show actor effect in parenting attitude. In this study, many variables were found to have only an actor effect; however, the parenting stress of the mother was found to have a partner effect of lowering the parenting attitude of the father. This study is significant as it confirms the relationship among the value of child, parenting stress, and parenting attitude based on the APIM analysis method that considers the characteristics of couple data.

Effects of Sensory Processing Characteristics on Parenting Stress in Developmentally Delayed and Typically Developed Children's Parents (발달지연아동과 일반아동 부모의 감각처리 특성이 양육 스트레스에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of the sensory processing characteristics of parents of developmentally delayed children and parents of typically developed children on parenting stress. Methods : From July to August 2022, 61 parents of children with developmental delays and 64 parents of children with typical development who used occupational therapy services at pediatric clinics and child development centers were evaluated for parenting stress and sensory profiles. Results : In a multiple regression analysis on the effect of sensory processing characteristics on the total score of parenting stress, tactile processing (β = 0.353, p = 0.001), gender (β = 0.438, p = 0.000), and monthly income (β = -0.261, p = 0.014) significantly affected the parenting stress of the parents of children with developmental delay. In parents of typically developing children, tactile processing (β = 0.376, p = 0.002) and gender (β = -0.264, p = 0.024) were found to have a significant effect on parenting stress. Conclusion : Parental gender and tactile processing characteristics of developmentally delayed and typically developing children are significant influencing factors for parenting stress.

Effect of Happiness on Parental Stress and Employer-supported Childcare Centers Satisfaction Level (부모의 행복감이 양육스트레스와 직장어린이집 이용만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the happiness of parent users of employer-supported childcare centers on their parental stress and employer-Supported childcare centers satisfaction level. It's basically meant to provide some information on how to ensure work-family reconciliation and improve the performance of employer-supported childcare centers. The subjects in this study were 206 parents who were users of employer-supported childcare centers. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the happiness and childcare centers satisfaction of the parent users of the employer-supported childcare centers were both at a higher level, and their parental stress was slightly above average. Second, there was a negative correlation between the happiness and parental stress of the parents who used the employer-supported childcare centers, and happiness was positively correlated to childcare centers satisfaction level. Third, as for the impact of the happiness of the parent users of the employer-supported childcare centers, parental stress was under the largest influence of happiness, followed by family harmony. happiness had the greatest impact on childcare centers satisfaction level, followed by interpersonal relationships. This outcome suggests that the supportive direction for parenting needs to focus on the affective dimension of promoting parents' happiness as well as focusing on the material and structural dimension.

A Study on the Mediating Effect of Social Support in the Relationship between Child Rearing Stress and Satisfaction with the Parental Roles of the Mother (어머니의 양육 스트레스와 부모역할 만족도의 관계에서 사회적 지지의 매개효과 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the inner side of those who raise the children, that is, the mothers, through the satisfaction with the parental roles and the child-rearing stress of them, with a view to emphasize the importance of an alternative for the mothers to cope with child-rearing stress and enhancing their satisfaction level with their role as a parent as well as the importance of social support in order to enhance the quality of rearing. For this purpose, the researcher conducted a survey with 312 mothers with preschool children of age 4 to 7 in Seoul and Gyeonggi Area from October 1, 2018 to October 15, 2018. To analyze the data, the researcher conducted frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, confidence analysis, correlation analysis, structural equation model, and Sobet-test, using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 22.0. The results of the analyses showed that social support and satisfaction with the parental role were significantly influenced by child-rearing stress, while social support influenced the satisfaction with the parental role significantly. Also, it turned out to have a mediating effect in the relationship between the mother's child-rearing stress and the satisfaction with the parental role. Based on these findings, the study highlights that the social network that is connected with the mothers may function to reduce the negative influence of child-rearing stress on the satisfaction with the parental role when the social network channels appropriate support, tangible assistance, appealing of difficulties, and encouragement.

The experience of stress, coping, and social support of students and parents after the economic crisis: The indigenous psychology approach (IMF시대 이후 초, 중, 고, 대학생과 부모의 스트레스 경험과 대처양식 및 사회적 지원: 토착심리학적 접근)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the experience of stress, coping and social support among students and their parents after Korea recovered from the recent economic crisis. A total of 634 students(primary school=135, junior high school=118, senior high school=168, and university=213) and 842 parents (fathers=421, mothers= 421), for a total of 1,476 participants, completed an open-ended questionnaire developed by the present researchers. For students, the most painful experience was related to problems in academic life, followed by problems in relationship. For father, the most painful experience was financial problems and for mothers, it was conflicts in the family. In stress situations, self-regulation was the most frequently adopted coping style by both students and adults. The second most frequently reported coping style was avoidance. In terms of social support, students reported receiving most support from friends, and the importance of friends became greater for the older students. Parents reported receiving most social support from their spouse. As for the type of social support, around half of students and parents reported receiving emotional support. Emotional support was viewed as being very important in reducing the stress experience related to academic life, problems in relationships, family conflict, and financial difficulties. The results of the present study will be compared to similar studies conducted before and during the economic crisis and the implications of these studies, as well as the importance of the indigenous Korean psychology, will be discussed.

Influence of Interpersonal Stress and Attitude toward Help on Happiness in Elementary School Students (초등학생의 대인관계 스트레스와 도움추구태도가 행복에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of elementary school students' interpersonal stress and attitudes toward help on happiness. The subjects were 171 elementary school students. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. The results of the study are as follows. First, there was a significant negative correlation between interpersonal stress and happiness. Attitudes toward help had a significant positive correlation with happiness. Second, parents and peer relationship stress had significant negative influence on happiness. Third, help seeking attitude toward parents and teacher among the sub-factors of help seeking attitude had a significant positive influence on happiness. Fourth, the relationship between parental stress and happiness showed a significant mediating effect on parents and teacher attitude toward help. The relationship between teacher stress and happiness showed a significant mediating effect on teacher attitude toward help. The relationship between peer relationship stress and happiness had no mediating effect of attitude toward help. Based on these results, we discussed the importance of attitude toward help in the relationship between stress and elementary school students' happiness.
