  • The study is to show the prevalence of double-care burdened households who care simultaneously for children(under 6) and provide invalid elderly care for aging parents among women aged 30s to 40s in Korea. The study aims to place care as ordinary needs for our whole lifetime, not as a special happening to a certain age group at specific period. Also, study attempts to reveal that care experiences include both burden and pleasure, and that care relationship, such as care giver-receiver-assistants(second-helpers), strongly affects the diversity of caring experience. Results are as follows. 38.1% of the survey respondents report that they are/have ever been the double-care burdened households who carry both child care under 6 and elderly care suffering from health problems in the past or the present. If including those who expecting the double burden of care in the near future, the prevalence rate goes up to 54.9%. As hypothesized, caring includes both pleasure and burden. The order of pleasant feelings is child care> parents care>in-law parents care, and that of burden is in reverse. However, caring relationship has a strong influence on pleasure or agony of the caring experience. The association between the relationship and the experience, which is expressed by pleasure or pain, occurs to both daughter-parents and in-laws. Interestingly, the caring experiences by daughter to her parents tend to go more burdensome because their husbands do not commit their identity as carer aid, with no additional caring effort for their in-laws. In conclusion, some policy suggestions for double care problems are provided.

  • Caregiving supports have been provided to decrease caregiving burdens of families of children with disabilities, but there are needs for improving caregiving services. The purpose of this study was to conceptualize content items and domains of caregiving supports from the perspectives of parents and service providers in order to help families of children with disabilities to decrease their caregiving burdens. This study used concept mapping that was useful for service-needs identification and program development. First, focus group interviews with two parent groups and one service provider group were conducted to generate a total of 31 items. Also, they sorted the items in terms of conceptual similarity and rated the items in terms of their needs. Next, the sorting data were analyzed using multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis and the rating data were calculated for mean. The results provided 31 content items in four domains: regular caregiving, activity-based caregiving, parent empowerment for caregving, and strengthening family relationships. All the domains were rated as important to decrease caregiving burdens. This study has practical implications for improving caregiving services and the related policies.

  • This study aimed to explore the experience and nature of emotional care for elderly parent living alone for middle-aged adult who formed initial insecure attachment with his or her parent. To this end, 12 middle-aged people aged 45 to 60 (3 males and 9 females) were recruited as subjects of the study, interviewed in-depth, and analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological research method. As a result of the study, 60 constitutive meanings, 18 themes, and 4 thematic groups were derived for the experience of middle-aged adult who experienced insecure attachment to his or her parent and caring for the emotional needs of elderly parent living alone. Thematic groups included "negative experiences that caused emotional exhaustion," "emotional driving force in emotional care," "the role of helper in parental care," and "economic and physical content in emotional care". This study is meaningful in that it revealed the phenomenon of experiences of emotional care for parent living alone by middle-aged adult who had an initial unstable attachment with his or her parent to understand them and contributed to the provision of counseling data.

  • The purpose of this study was to review the relationships among parental care and parental overprotection perceived by adolescence, their ego-resilience and self-regulated learning ability. For this purpose, a total 2,002 students were selected from the seventh data sets of the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS). More specifically, samples were composed of 1st graders in middle schools(n=2,002). As a result, first, the perceived parental care had significant effects on the self-regulated learning ability both directly and indirectly through ego-resilience. Second, the perceived parental overprotection had effects on their self-regulated learning ability mediated by ego-resilience. But the effect of parental overprotection was less than the effect of parental care. This study implies that parental care attitude and ego-resilience play important roles in the continuous development of adolescents' self-regulated learning ability.

  • The purpose of this paper is to classify OECD countries in regard to levels of supporting fathers' care work. Several meaningful conclusions were reached. First, examining the level of supporting fathers' care work and the strength of the traditional bread-winner model, OECD countries can be classified into 5 different clusters. The result is different from the mainstream typology of welfare states and suggests the new typology of welfare states. Second, the level of supporting fathers' care work and the strength of the traditional bread-winner model were found to be related to total fertility rates and women's labor market participation rates. Third, in regard to the level of supporting fathers' care work, Korea was the lowest among OECD countries. This result points to one of the important reasons to the low level of total fertility rat, and low rate of women's labor market participation in Korea.

The participants of study were 25 mothers with elementary school children in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Gangwon. Data collection was conducted from June 23, 2017 to July 18, 2017 by focus group interview. 'The reality of the after school care class that the mother sees' is 'the overall level of after school care class is low', 'the probability of selecting the same as a lottery', 'the quality of education that varies depending on the level of the teacher', 'for the child attending the care class negative awareness'. 'Mother's policy demands for after school care classes' are presented as 'positioning as a substitute for thinking and caring', 'improvement of separation between parents' expectations', 'expansion of care recipients', 'request for resilient management'. As the conclusion of this study, first, after school care classes need to focus on the care function. Second, it is necessary to operate after school care classes by level. Third, the realistic needs of mothers should be reflected so that after school care classes can be positioned as alternatives to private education.

  • Purpose: Parents with a premature infant are usually confronted with difficulties in caring for their babies and need education on appropriate care. The purpose of this paper was to describe the components of caring education for parents with a premature infant based on an integrative literature review and to present strategies for future education. Methods: Four electronic databases were searched to identify studies. Sixteen articles were selected through full text screening of related research published in domestic journals from January 1990 to October 2012. Results: Through in-depth discussion and investigation of the relevant literature, three components emerged; (a) nurses as educators and parents as learners, (b) education content including caring on admission or discharge, and effects of education, and (c) education environment including timing, place and materials. Conclusion: Future education on caring for premature infant should include the nurse as educator and have diverse content including parent's role, interaction with healthcare providers, and special care for premature infants with special problems. Moreover, highly technical teaching materials should be provided, along with continuous support of institution and government to individual caregivers. Results of this study provide comprehensive prospective and basic standards for education on premature infant care.
