A natural hybrid between spinous loach, Cobitis longicorpus and cyprinid loach Misgurunus anguilicaudatus(Pices, Cobitidae) (왕종개 Cobitis longicorpus와 미꾸리 Misgurunus anguilicaudatus의 자연잡종에 관하여)

  • A fish, collected from the Tongbok stream, secondary tributary of the Somjin River system, appeared to be a hybrid between Cobitis longicorpus and Misgurunus anguilicaudatus. The morphological features of this specimen have suborbital spine and distinctive black small spots at the back of its opecleula characterized by C. longicorpus. However, it has totally different body color patterns on the sides of body from the C. longicorpus and The structure of lami-na circularis was less distinctive than that of C. longicorpus. Body measurements of the specimen were similar to the C. longicorpus with the exceptions as caudal peduncle depth(CPD), caudal peduncle length(CPL), predorsal length and CPD/CPL. CPD/CPL were sightly higher and longer than that of the C. longicorpus, and predorsal length was more similar to the M. anguilicaudatus than the C. longicorpus. CPD/CPL value was intermediate between the two parental species. This results indicate that the specimen used in this study is a hybrid between Cobitis longicorpus and Misgurunus anguilicaudatus.

Age and Growth of Three Species of Genus Gymnogobius from Korea (한국산 날망둑속(屬) 3종(種) (망둑어과(科))의 연령과 성장)

  • Three species, Gymnogobius urotaenia, G. sp. 1 and G. sp. 2, which were collected at Hosanriver, Hosan-ri, Samcheock-si, Gangwon-do, Korea, were examined for study of the age and growth. There was no differences between sexes in growth (p>0.05) except in age 0 of G. urotaenia, However, there were differences among the three species (p<0.0001). namely, G. sp. 1 was longer by about 5~10 mm (SL) than the other two species in each age group, while G. sp. 2 was shortest in each age group: G. rotaenia, at age 0 was less than 45 mm, at age 1 to be 45~60 mm, at age 2 to be 60~80 mm, at age 3 to be over 80 mm, and its maximum size was 105.0 mm. G. sp. 1, at age 0 was less than 55 mm, at age 1 55~65 mm, at age 2 65~85 mm, at age 3 over 85 mm and its maximum size was 105.3 mm. G. sp. 2, 0 age was less than 40 mm, at age 1 40~55 mm, at age 2 55~75 mm, at age 3 over 75 mm and its maximum size was 85 mm. Changes of body parts with increasing of body length were examined and analyzed. Covariance analysis showed interspecies differences in the following characters: body depth, head length, caudal peduncle depth, upper jaw length and pelvic fin ray length. G. urotaenia had the highest K-value (the relative growth coefficient) in head length and pelvic fin ray length, and G. sp. 1 had the highest in body depth, caudal peduncle depth and upper jaw length. However, G. sp. 2 had the lowest K-value in these 5 characters.

The First Record on the Rhynchocypris kumgangensis from Taehwa River, Korea (태화강에서 처음 채집된 금강모치(Rhynchocypris kumgangensis))

  • Morphological characteristics and population characteristics of the Rhynchocypris kumgangensis were investigated at Taehwa River from April 2014 to April 2015. This is the first record on R. kumgangensis not only from Guksu stream (the upstream region of Taehwa River, Ulsan-si Ulchu-gun Beomseo-eup Kuksu-ri) but also from the stream flowing into the Gangneungnamdae stream, in the southern part of East Sea, Korea. The morphometric characteristics of R. kumgangensis in the Taehwa River and the Han River are very similar except that the population at Taehwa River showed shorter caudal peduncle length than caudal peduncle depth when compared with the population at Han River. In terms of meristic character the population at Taehwa River showed fewer numbers of scales at the lateral line, above the lateral line and below the lateral line. Other than that, the two populations showed the same meristic characters. The fish cohabiting with R. kumgangensis mainly composed of Zacco platypus (25.2%), Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (24.1%) and Zacco koreanus (21.8%). Length frequency distribution analysis indicated that the length of the group ranged between 45~65 mm and the average length was 54.3 mm. Calculation of the length-weight relation of R. kumgangensis showed the value of constant a as 0.000002 and b as 3.34, and the Condition factor (K) was 1.10 an on average.

Morphological Characteristics of Three Species, Genus Chaenogobius(Gobiidae), from Korea (한국산 꾹저구속(망둑어과) 3종에 대한 형태적 특징)

  • The morphological characteristics between male and female of three species, Chaenogobius urotaenia, C. sp. MR, C. sp. BW, collected from June 1996 to Aug. 1999, Korea was studied. Of 13 characters to be studied, 12 characters with exception of caudal fin ray length were significantly different among three species and these three species were distinguished each other by the results of the multiple comparison test (REGWQ test). Interspecific differences in female was distinct in body depth, head length, caudal peduncle length, caudal peduncle depth, snout length, pectoral fin ray length; In particular, C. sp. MR was shorter in upper jaw length, anal fin ray length and eye diameter, and to be smaller in head depth and head width than other two species. Chaenogobius urotaenia was longer in pelvic fin ray length. In case of male, there was not characters to distinguish each one among three species; Chaenogobius urotaenia was longer in head length, eye diameter and pelvic fin ray length than other two species, C. sp. MR to be longer in caudal peduncle length, but shorter in snout length and anal fin ray length, and to be lower in head depth. C. sp. BW was higher in body depth and caudal peduncle depth, and to be longer in upper jaw length and pectoral fin ray length. Cobitis zhejiangensis, a New Species from the Ling River, China (Teleostei: Cobitidae) (중국산 미꾸리과 어류 1신종 Cobitis zhejiangensis의 기재)

  • A new species, Cobitis zhejiangensis, is described based on 32 specimens collected in the Ling River, Xianju District, Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province, China. The new species superficially resembles Cobitis sinensis, but is distinguished from that species by the following features: deeper body (17.3% versus 14.9% of SL), shorter caudal peduncle length (12.0% versus 13.5% of SL), deeper caudal peduncle depth (11.4% versus 9.5% of SL), color pattern of second Gambetta's zone (rounded ovoidal dots-narrow elongate bloches). Deep caudal peduncle depth and short caudal peduncle length (cpd/cpl : 95.2%) and the color pattern of second Gambetta's zone are the unique features of this species not shared with any other congener species of China.

  • Echinostomatid eggs were found from a 21year old man, whose native village is Munkyong-gun, Kyongsangnam-do during fecal examination in October 1983. The eggs were detected again one week later concommitantly with the eggs of Clonorchis sinensis. He had no subjective symptoms related with these fluke infections. He was treated with praziquantel ($Distocide^{\circledR}$) 20 mg/kg in single dose and purgated with magnesium salt. One echinostomatid fluke and 4 adults of C. sinensis were collected from the diarrheal stools. After morphological observation, the echinostomatid fluke was identified as Echinostoma hortense Asada, 1926. This is the first record on human E. hortense infection in Korea.

Sexual Dimorphism of Three Species of Gymnogobius (Gobiidae) from Korea (한국산 날망둑속 3종 (망둑어과)의 성적이형)

  • Three species, Gymnogobius urotaenia, G. sp. 1 and G. sp. 2, collected at Hosan-river, Hosan-ri, Samcheock-si, Gangwon-do, Korea, were examined for the study of sexual dimorphism. The three species have peculiar nuptial pigmentation during the breeding season: all females of the three species showed an intense black coloration on the ventral part of the head, the pelvic fin, the anal fin and the margin of the first dorsal fin. There was a difference between G. sp. 1 and the other two species in 1/3 from margin of first dorsal fin. Namely, G. sp. 1 showed an intense black coloration, whereas the other two species had an intense yellow coloration. All females of the three species showed the same, intensely yellow coloration in the ventral part of the body. Males of G. urotaenia and G. sp. 2 had almost the same nuptial pigmentation, however the former showed diffuse black coloration in the anal fin, whereas the latter had an intensely black anal fin. Males of G. sp. 1 differed from those of the other two species in their yellow color on the ventral part of the head, the pelvic f ins, the anal fin, in contrast to the diffuse black coloration in those parts in the other species. The genital papilla of males was triangle-shaped, but that of females was heart-shaped. Significant differences between sexes include: G. urotaenia, 7 characters (body depth, head length, snout length, upper jaw length, head depth, pectoral fin ray length, eye diameter); G. sp. 1, 11 characters (body depth, head length, caudal peduncle length, caudal peduncle depth, snout length, upper jaw length, head width, head depth, anal fin ray length, pectoral fin ray length and caudal fin ray length); G. sp. 2, 10 characters (body depth, head length, caudal peduncle depth, snout length, upper jaw length, head width, anal fin ray length, pectoral f in ray length, caudal fin ray length and eye diameter). Of the 5 characters which showed differences in all three species (body depth, head length, snout length, upper jaw length and pectoral fin ray length), females had higher values than males only in body depth, whereas males values in all other characters. The upper jaw length was the most distinctive sexually dimorphic feature, the upper jaw extended beyond the posterior margin of the eyes (p<0.001) in males but not in females.

A Taxonomic Study of the Genera Acanthogobius and Synechogobius (Pisces : Gobiidae) from Korea (한국산(韓國産) 문절망둑 속(屬)과 풀망둑속(屬) 어류(魚類)의 분류학적(分類學的) 연구(硏究))

  • Taxonomic study of the five species (Acanthogobius elongata, A. flavimanus, A. lactipes, A. luridus and Synechogobius) from Korea was carried out based on morphometric, cephalic sensory canal and ecological characters. Taxonomic revision and classificational keys are provided. Synechogobius hasta is easily distinguished from four species of the genus Acanthogobius in eleven characters, i. e., the number of dorsal and anal fin rays, the transverse scales, the vertebral numbers, the formula of interneural spine of the first dorsal fin, the number of interhemal spine anterior to the first hemal spine, the number of epipleural and pleurals, the ratio of caudal peduncle length, the ratio of caudal peduncle depth and the regular variations in the ratio of body parts with the body length. In the genus Acanthobobius, A. elongata is distinguished from other 3 congeneric species in the ratio of body parts and the oculoscapular sensory canal. Moreover, A. flavimanus differs from other 3 congeneric species in the lateral scales, the transverse scales, the number of predorsal scales, the vertebral number, the number of epipleural and pleurals. Sensory papillae rows of S. hasta is not similar that of the genus Acanthogobius in having a singular sensroy papillae rows. A. elongata has no oculoscapular sensory canal D and A. flavimanus has transverse sensory papillae in cheek, and these are one of the unique characters distinguished form other congeneric species. In the spawning period inferred from gonadosomatic index, A. elongata varied from late March to late June ; A. flavimanus, January to April ; A. lactipes, May to September ; A. luridus, early May to early July and S. hasta, early March to early May.

Natural Hybrids between Pungitius sinensis sinensis and P. sinensis kaibarae (가시고기(Pungitius sinensis sinensis)와 잔가시고기(P. sinensis kaibarae) 사이의 자연잡종(自然雜種))

  • Natural hybrids between Pungitius sisensis sinensis and P. sinensis kaibarae were found in their sympatric area, a streamlet below Chibyon Reservoir in Kangnung city, Kangwondo, Korea. P. sinensis sinensis and P. sinensis kaibarae showed the same electropherograms as reported previously. However, about 10% of the specimens had peculiar banding patterns and they seemed to be hybrid between the two subspecies. They are divided further into two groups: sinensis-type and kaibarae-type hybrid. Two morphometric characters, snout length and depth of caudal peduncle, indicated the hybrid's property well. The color of testis of P. sinensis sinensis and P. sinensis kaibarae was grey and black, respectively, but that of hybrid was intermediate. The problem of reproductive isolation between the two groups raised by the finding of their hybrids was discussed.

  • The morphological characteristics of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta, masou salmon. Oncorhynchus masou and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss in Korea were studied from 1989 to 1990. It was found that 13 factors of the female and 11 factors of the male in body form, number of pyloric ceaca and gill rakers has significant specific differences. There were some differences among species in the ratios of body depth, caudal peduncle depth, dorsal fin length and anal fin length to standard length (PBL), and snout length, eye diameter, upper jaw length, and cheek to head length. In the ratio of head length to fork length of the male, chum salmon showed the highest(24.7%) value and rainbow trout the lowest(21.6%). No difference was found in the female. It was proved that number of vertebrae, gill rakers, pyloric ceaca and lateral line scales were useful taxonomical characteristics of the salmon species. In particular, the ratio of eye diameter (ED) to head length (HL) appeared to be a new taxonomic criterion for the salmons in Korean waters.
