  • In this study we investigated the effects of using GSP in solving geometric problems. Especially we focused the effects of GSP in leveled students' connection of geometry and algebra. High leveled students prefer to use algebraic formula to solve geometric problems. But when they did not know the geometric meaning of their algebraic formula, they could recognize the meaning after using GSP. Middle and low leveled students usually used GSP to obtain hints to solve the problems. For the low leveled students GSP was usually used to understand the meaning of the problem, but it did not make them solve the problem.

  • Problem-based Learning (PBL) has been known as an effective strategy for dealing with various aspects of education such as the enhancement of students' motivation, interest in subjects, academic achievement, and cooperative abilities. However, PBL has not been widely implemented in secondary schools. The purpose of this study is to investigate secondary school teachers' perception of problem-based learning and their way of applying it. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with nine secondary school teachers. Five of them had experience in implementing PBL, while four of them had interest in using PBL but had not yet had the experience. Different concepts were extracted and categorized. Nvivo 2.0 was used for analysis. The results were as follows: Changes in student attitude toward class, improvement on cooperation with others, self-regulated learning skills, and satisfaction from students' positive comments on PBL enabled teachers to become more enthusiastic and positive toward PBL. The stress of developing proper problems and the enormous amounts of time and efforts required in using PBL were shown as barriers for teachers in implementing PBL. However, some negative perspectives about PBL changed into positive after teachers experience PBL. By examining each teacher's way of implementing PBL, several teaching strategies suitable to their school systems were suggested.

  • When mathematicians solve the new problems, they present the solutions to their colleagues for getting the approval. If the solution is accepted, it will be theorems. This phenomenon also happens to classrooms in elementary and secondary school. That is main reason to emphasize mathematical communication activities in mathematics education. This study is aimed to develop teaching and learning model for the improvement of mathematical communication ability, applicate the teaching and learning model to two groups and analyze for mathematical thoughts. This study is a case study of 3rd grader's activities. Eight students, four are group applied the teaching and learning model and four are traditional group. The results have been drawn as follows: First, students in the teaching and learning model group induced richer interactions for student's understanding and investigation when we compare to those of traditional group. Second, students in the teaching and learning model group have the chance to explain their thoughts. And we can observe students to clear on their thought through speaking and discussing. This model makes students to enhance organizing, forming and clearing in their mathematical thoughts and is effective to estimate of students thought for teacher.

  • In order to cultivate talented people with national economic influence in the rapidly changing 21st- century modern society, STEM(Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) education has been emphasized in advanced countries such as America and England. In South Korea, STEAM(Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) education is emphasized by adding Arts. The objective of STEAM education is to strengthen the interest and motivation of learners, to focus on experience, exploration, experimentation, to solve convergent thinking and real-life problems, rather than cramming method of teaching and memorization. This study identifiesan instructional design for converged English, the world's official language, and science which is found in nearly all disciplines. With the development of the 4th industrial revolution based on the PBL model, learners participate in their lessons voluntarily for problem-solving skills. The instructional design based on the ADDIE model consists of 5 procedures: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The goal of fostering talented people with national economic influence is also important, and the teacher in education must recognize the importance of STEAM education and an appropriate instructional design should be studied constantly.

  • Given the importance of early experience in algebraic thinking, we designed six consecutive lessons in which $4^{th}$ graders were encouraged to recognize patterns in the process of finding the relationships between two quantities and to represent a given problem with various mathematical models. The results showed that students were able to recognize patterns through concrete activities with manipulative materials and employ various mathematical models to represent a given problem situation. While students were able to represent a problem situation with algebraic expressions, they had difficulties in using the equal sign and letters for the unknown value while they attempted to generalize a pattern. This paper concludes with some implications on how to connect algebraic thinking with students' arithmetic or informal thinking in a meaningful way, and how to approach algebra at the elementary school level.

  • The meanings of division don't change and rather are connected from whole numbers to rational numbers. In this respect, connecting division of natural numbers, division of fractions, and division of decimal numbers could help for students to study division in meaningful ways. Against this background, the units of division of fractions and division of decimal numbers in fifth grade were redesigned in a way for students to connect meanings of division and procedures of division. The results showed that most students were able to understand the division meanings and build correct expressions. In addition, the students were able to make appropriate division situations when given only division expressions. On the other hand, some students had difficulties in understanding division situations with fractions or decimal numbers and tended to use specific procedures without applying diverse principles. This study is expected to suggest implications for how to connect division throughout mathematics in elementary school.
