  • It is often assumed by many people that science is male-oriented subject area. It is due to the fact that many examples and models dealt in the science teaming are male, and also there are more male scientists and female. Because the content of many science books are male-centered, it reinforces interest and self-confident for boys, whereas, it discourages the inspiration to develop the identity of scientists as a woman. In the West, in order to solve these issues, the educators have attempted to identify various factors in the science achievement, job description, and others which may contribute in developing gender difference in science learning and attitude towards science. It is also further attempted to develop girl-friendly science learning materials to facilitate education of woman scientists and also encourage their participation in the areas of science and technology. In this study, various strategies for female science education have been explored and suggested by examining science learning programs for female students, analyzing research literatures on the gender difference in science education.

  • Historically, the use of algorithms has been emphasized in the mathematics curriculum at the elementary school mathematics. The current reform movement in our country are seemed to emphasize the importance of algorithms in favor of problem-solving approaches, the conceptualization of mathematical processes and applications of mathematics in real world situations. Recently, children may come to school with a fairly well-developed attitude about mathematics and mathematical ideas. That is, they do not come to school and to learning mathematics with a clean slate. Because they have already formed some partial mathematical concepts in a wide variety of contexts. Many kindergarten children have attended pre-school programs where they played with blocks, made patterns, and started adding and subtracting. It seems that there are psychological change attitudes of the children in upper grades toward learning mathematics. In our elementary school mathematics, almost every student are still math anxious or have developed math anxiety because of paper-pencil test. In these views, this paper is devoted to introduce and apply to second grade students in ND-elementary school in Taegu City the new method for learning addition and subtraction so called ‘Mrs Weill's Hill’, which is believed as a suitable method for children with mathematical teaming disabilities and Math anxiety.

  • As the importance of technology increases, the need for TPACK, an knowledge for pre-service teachers, to integrate technology into education has increased. In order to improve TPACK of pre-service teachers, programming-based TPACK education program was developed. However, the developed educational program did not affect the self-efficacy of pre-service teachers. In order to solve this problem, in this study, the improved TPACK-P education program was applied to pre-service teachers to verify the change of self-efficacy. As a result, the improved TPACK-P education program was effective in the development of self-efficacy of pre-service teachers. In detail, pre-teacher's self-confidence and preference of task difficulty were significantly improved than previous. The TPACK-P education program, which is improved through this, confirms that the pre-service teacher promotes the integration of technology into the classroom rather than the existing education program.

  • Self-Regulated Learning Strategy is a kind of learning strategy that learners could choose and apply metacognitive, cognitive, motivational, and behavioral strategy autonomically and could take an active part in the classes. The purpose of the study was to identify aspects of self-regulated learning strategy with mathematical journal writing. Mathematical journal was composed of 13 questions and each of factor had 1~2 questions. The results of the study have revealed that metacognitive strategies were identified as setting up learning goals, seeking problem solving strategies, reflective thinking and providing examples. Cognitive strategy was identified as understanding the structure among ideas, sequential ranking and key ideas. Motivational strategy was identified as satisfaction and anxiety for studies, confidence and frustration for next studies. There are implications for mathematics education that self-regulated learning strategy can be improved with mathematical journal writing and help students to study mathematics efficiently and successfully.

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop a theory on the early childhood caring experience of North Korean refugee mothers and how such caring affects how they deal with the socio-psychological problems they face as North Korean refugees. Methods: Data were gathered by indepth interviews, participant observation, and medical records, and were analyzed using the Grounded Theory methods of Strauss and Corbin (1998). Results: From open coding 62 concepts, 23 subcategories and 11 categories were derived, and the North Korean refugee mothers' caring experience was revealed to be 'hopeful upbringing'. A central theme common to the participants was 'coexistence of expectations and worries'. Conclusion: The results of this study provide theoretical grounds to understand North Korean refugee mothers' child care experiences and offer personalized nursing and a deeper understanding of their needs by looking at their experience. Findings may also be useful to help nurses who care for North Korean refugee mother-child dyads in the community and in clinical settings to gain insight on this special needs group, and facilitate the development of interventions based on better understanding of the mothers' experiences.

  • This study was intended to explore the changes in teaching methods when freedom to choose curriculum, instruction, and evaluation methods is allowed and when 'free semesters' are free from entrance examination for high school. For this question, we analyzed free semester education plans of eight sample schools and interviewed 33 teachers and students respectively. The results were as follows. Firstly, all schools planned to use teaching methods for meaningful learning, although they are limited to those exemplified in guidelines for free semester. Secondarily, teaching methods adopted for free semester were characterized as activities enhancing student participation. Thirdly, teaching methods such as career exploration, scientific experimentation, cooperative learning, flipped learning, interdisciplinary learning were used only a couple of times in a semester. Changes in teaching methods were referred to enhance students' interest, confidence, self-regulation, creativity, problem-solving and cooperative learning.

  • The observation and recommendation system was recently introduced for selecting gifted-students in science, and it has required to arrange the reliable and valid selection criteria that could identify the high potential competency of them. In this study, we explored the competencies that could help to discriminate gifted-students' inner properties, and also developed the dictionary based on them. The competencies were extracted from the proven previous competency dictionaries/models and examined by the structured survey and the focus group interview in order to ascertain the competencies of the science-gifted students. The results revealed that there were two competency clusters such as cognitive and affective domains. The cognitive cluster consisted of 6 competencies as follows: goal suggestion, planning, information collection and analysis, problem solving, higher-order thinking, and expertise and self-development competency. The affective cluster consisted of 3 competencies: confidence, achievement orientation, and curiosity competency. The dictionary categorized by the names, definitions, key elements, and behavioral indicators and their levels of the derived competencies was developed. Findings were expected to provide the implications on the selection criteria of the potential science-gifted students through the observation and recommendation system.
