Many researchers have reported that 7th graders have severe difficulties in using letters and algebraic expressions. This study investigated the way Microsoft Excel contributes to student's understanding of letters and algebraic expressions. For six hours through two weeks, four 7th grade students experienced various activities with Excel after school and both before and after the experimentation, the interviews to check their understanding was conducted. The results were as follows; First, after the experimentation, students used various letters to express formulas and recognized that letters represent not only some objects but also changing objects. Also they accepted that same objects could be represented by different letters and different objects could be represented by the same letters. Second, Excel improved students' abilities to discriminate variables and invariables in the problem and to find mathematical relationships among variables. And with Excel students could divide the whole calculation procedure into several steps in order to handle it more easily. Also, Excel made immediate numerical feedback possible and it made students express the calculation in a more formalized way than a paper and pencil environment did.

Some process algebras were applied to enterprise business modelling for formal specification and verification. ${\pi}$-calculus and mobile ambient can be considered for the distributed and mobile, especially to represent the movements of distributed real-time business processes. However there are some limitations to model the movements: 1) ${\pi}$-calculus passes the name of port for indirect movements, and 2) mobile ambient uses ambient to synchronize asynchronous movements forcefully. As a solution to the limitations, this paper presents a new process algebra, called ${\delta}$-calculus, to specify direct and synchronous movements of business processes over geo-temporal space. Any violation of safety or security of the systems caused by the movements can be indicated by the properties of the movements: synchrony, priority and deadline. A tool, called SAVE, was developed on ADOxx metamodelling platform to demonstrate the concept.
'Slope' is an invariant of a straight line and 'Linear Equation' is an algebraic representation of a straight line in the cartesian plane. The concept 'slope' is necessary for algebraically representing a geometrical figure, line. In this article, we investigate how those concepts are dealt with in school mathematics and suggest some improvement methods.
Given the importance of early experience in algebraic thinking, we designed six consecutive lessons in which $4^{th}$ graders were encouraged to recognize patterns in the process of finding the relationships between two quantities and to represent a given problem with various mathematical models. The results showed that students were able to recognize patterns through concrete activities with manipulative materials and employ various mathematical models to represent a given problem situation. While students were able to represent a problem situation with algebraic expressions, they had difficulties in using the equal sign and letters for the unknown value while they attempted to generalize a pattern. This paper concludes with some implications on how to connect algebraic thinking with students' arithmetic or informal thinking in a meaningful way, and how to approach algebra at the elementary school level.

A complex object model is one of the value based data model which extends the existing relational data model for supporting complex structured data. This paper studies a method for designing algebra for the complex object model. For this some others' algebra supporting complex objects are compared and analysed in terms of the applicability of a algebraic optimization strategics. The complex object algebra is designed, based on four principles, simple and clear definitions, no restriction on input data, single specification system. The central nature of this paper is to keep the basis of algebraic optimization method through simplicity, safety and the applicability of algebraic optimization strategy. Finally, it shown that the designed algebra has the equivalent or enhanced expressability with other's algebra.
This study was designed to gain insight to adopt CAS into secondary level algebra education in Korea. Most inactive usage of calculators in math and most negative effects of calculators on their achievements of Korean students were shown in International studies such as TIMSS-R. A comparative study was carried out with consideration of mathematical backgrounds and technological environments. 8 Korean students and 26 US students in Grade 11 were participated in this study. Subjects' Problem solving process and their strategies of CAS usage in classical Box-problem with CAS were analyzed. CAS helped modeling by providing symbolic manipulation commands and graphs with students' mathematical knowledge. Results indicates that CAS requires shifts focus in algebraic contents: recognition of decimal & algebraic presentations of numbers; linking various presentations, etc. The extent of instrumentation effects on the selection of problem solving strategies among Korea and US students. This paper is based on theory of Usiskin who defined inclusively the various concepts of algebra among many theories classifying a type of the algebra. For this purpose, we examined the curriculum of the algebra of Korea, America and Japan, then analyzed where the problems in "Letter and Formula" of the textbooks fall under Usiskin's concepts of algebra.
Although systems with finite capacities have been the topic of much study, there are as of yet no analytic expressions for (higher) moment and tail probability of stationary waiting times in systems with even constant processing times. The normal queueing theory cannot properly handle such systems due to the difficulties caused by finite capacity. In this study, for a DBR (Drum-Buffer-Rope) line production system with constant processing times, we introduce analytic expressions by using previous results obtained using a max-plus algebraic approach.
