  • In this study, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immuno-chromatographic technique were combined to fabricate immuno-strip sensors for the detection of Legionella pneumophila. The immuno-strip sensor was manufactured with four different membranes. A nitrocellulose membrane was used to immobilize capture antibody and generate signals due to the high affinity to antibodies, and glass fiber membranes were used as a conjugate release pad and a sample application pad. A cellulose membrane was used as an absorption pad to induce sample flow by the capillarity. Colorimetric signals produced by sandwich immuno-reaction and enzyme reaction could be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively within 30 min. Under the given experimental conditions, sensor signals with L. pneumophila samples were observed qualitatively by naked eyes and measured quantitatively in a range of $1.3{\times}10^3-1.3{\times}10^6CFU/mL$ with a digital camera and home-made image analysis software.

  • Recently the Korean government has tried to cut down the $PM_{10}$ concentration by the Special Law for Air Quality Improvement. But the concentrations of $PM_{10}$ have exceeded the air quality standard at most monitoring stations. Primary $PM_{10}$ emitted from various sources and emission data have large uncertainty. The biomass burning is one of the major sources of $PM_{10}$ emission. The biomass burning is composed of wood stove usage, meat cooking and agricultural combustion etc.. Activity data and emission factors for the biomass burning are limited, and it is hard to calculate the air pollution emissions from these sources. In this study, we tried to estimate the air pollution emission from residential wood stove usage. The number of total wood stoves is estimated by the survey of wood stove manufacturer. And air pollution emission factors for the wood stove are investigated using the flue gas measurement by U.S. EPA particulate test method (Method 5G). As the results, the $PM_{10}$ and CO emission factors of wood stove are estimated as 7.7 g/kg-wood and 78.8 g/kg-wood respectively. The annual $PM_{10}$ and CO emissions from wood stove are calculated as 1,200~3,600 ton/year and 12,600~36,400 ton/year in Korea. It is confirmed that wood stove is the one of major sources of biomass burning, and the survey for activity data and the measurement for emission factors are needed for reducing the uncertainty of these emission data.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of female's Bone Mineral Density after taking herbal medicine. We examined age, sex, marriage, alcohol, smoking, and job of 76 female and their life style related with Osteoporosis. Bone Mineral Density was examined after 1 month (one herbal medicine), 2 months (two herbal medicine), and 3 months (three herbal medicine) between Group I (taking pear extract) and Group II (taking herbal medicine). Bone Mineral Density of Group II after 1 month was increased, but insignificant. Bone Mineral Density was not significantly different between the Group I and Group II after 2 and 3 months. In this study, we can conclude that Bone Mineral Density was increased after 1 month of taking herbal medicine. But we had inaccurate results due to limitations of this study: period of test, accuracy of instrument, impossibility of use young antlers of the deer, and etc. More detailed study should be conducted to yield more concrete results.

  • The Weightless Neural Network(WNN) has the advantage of the processing speed, less computability than weighted neural network which readjusts the weight. Especially, The behavior information such as sequential gesture has many serial correlation. So, It is required the high computability and processing time to recognize. To solve these problem, Many algorithms used that added preprocessing and hardware interface device to reduce the computability and speed. In this paper, we proposed the Ram based Sequential Cumulative Neural Network(SCNN) model which is sign language recognition system without preprocessing and hardware interface. We experimented with using compound words in continuous korean sign language which was input binary image with edge detection from camera. The recognition system of sign language without preprocessing got 93% recognition rate.

  • This paper proposes a new strategy for assisting SMEs in S. Korea to grow by the use of free technologies, which include expired patents, patents that are effective in other countries but not in S. Korea, and technologies that were published without being patented. A key question answered in this paper is how to find valuable technologies developed by large companies that can be utilized by domestic SMEs. A procedure for identifying emerging free technologies was developed and is explained with an example. A quantitative analysis of technology trend was conducted on PCT's published patents that did not include S. Korea as a designated country, and then emerging IPC subclasses were identified. Among those emerging technology areas, the subclass areas where the number of Korean inventors is small were identified as key emerging free technology areas. Our method for identifying emerging free technologies can assist domestic SMEs to advance in the international market and guide the development of a national industrial strategy.

  • For the past 50 years, Korean library researchers have zealously absorbed foreign thoughts and techniques without filtering them discreetly. Both research themes and methods have been freely borrowed and put into practice. This practice has been taken for granted for LIS researchers in Korea. But, lack of understanding of our own library field, has produced problems for researchers. This is because libraries of each country have its own developmental stage and cultural heritage. Therefore, I would say that researchers should be cautious in the application of foreign theories. In Korea, this kinds of filtering process has been neglected in the past. LIS research must have close relations with practical library work. LIS theories and practices in Korea should be hopefully based on the needs of the Korean society. In short, Korea should have a LIS, which serve the needs and ideals of the library and society of Korea.

  • Maritime safety management needs active public participations because the sea is too wide for a government to respond to all unexpected accidents with limited resources. Marine rescue volunteer organizations of US, UK, Japan and Korea were compared one another on the base of disaster management governance theory, and recommendations for the development of marine rescue volunteer organization of Korea were proposed. The advanced organizations commonly have tradition of marine rescue voluntaryism in the advanced maritime countries. They have nation-wide networks and self-governing structures. Their main activities include public maritime safety education and fundraising programs as well as marine rescue operations. They have cooperative relationships with government agencies in charge of national maritime safety management, which are usually guaranteed by legislations or institutional systems. Donations from the public are major source of their finances. Members mainly consist of civil volunteers, and get basic compensations for their expenses. For the advancement of marine rescue volunteer organization of Korea, efforts are needed to strengthen the membership of civil rescue fleet, to activate public education and fundraising programs, and to amend the related law for institutional support.

  • Tolaasin, a peptide toxin produced by Pseudomonas tolaasii, causes a serious disease on the cultivated mushrooms, known as brown blotch disease. Hemolysis using red blood cells was designed to measure the cytotoxicity of tolaasin molecules. Since tolaasin has two amine groups near the C-terminus, its membrane binding will be dependent on the ionic states of the amine groups. When the tolaasin peptide was titrated, its titration curve indicated the presence of titratable amine(s) at pH ranges from 7.0 to 9.6. When the pH-dependence of tolaasin-induced hemolysis was measured at various pHs, hemolysis was more efficient at alkaline pHs. In order to measure the membrane binding activity of tolaasin at different pHs, RBCs were incubated with tolaasin molecules for short time periods and washed out with fresh buffer. Because of the tolaasin binding during the preincubation period, fast hemolyses were observed at pH 8 or higher. These results imply that non-charged or less positively charged states of tolaasin molecules easily bind to membrane and show high hemolytic activity.
