This experiment was planned to study the mating behavior of the fall webworm. Hyphantria cunea Drury. In this experiment. observations on mating behavior of the fall webworm were based on the time of moth emergence, time of mating activity, copulation period, mating frequency, and effect of moth ages on the mating ratio. Mating frequency was determined by visual observation and the number of spermatophores. The results obtained were as follows; 1) The moths started emerging at about 3 P. M. and ended at about 12 P. M. The peak of moth emergence was between 7 and 8 P. M. Total ratio or the moths emerged between 7 and 8 P. M. was 42. 1 for female and 41.8 for male. 2) Mating activity was mostly confined to the period between 5 and 6 A. M. The average complation period was 12 hours (ranges between 7 and 17 hours). 3) The average ratio of single mating was $66.0\%$ for both sexes, and that of double. matings were $4.1\%$ for females and $5.4\%$ for males in laboratory test. The mating ratio of female moths collected from the field was $62.1\%$ for single mating. and 15.5" for doubles matings. These data indicated that single mating seemed to be most common. 4) Mating usually occured within four days after the emergence from the pupae. Mating ratio was greatly varied with the moth ages. The highest mating ratio was observed within 6 to 15 hours after moth emergence. Both sexes usually mated with the moths of the same ages.
Reproductive behavior of the red-striped golden stink-bug, Poecilocoris lewisi Distant, was investigated in a room at 25${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$, 60${\pm}$5% R.H. and the 16L:8D photo regimen. Mating of adults started on the 9th day after emergence, peaked 84.5% on the 21st day. Mating behavior of this insect was observed as follows : approach, antennal contact, mount, abdominal approach and copulation (end-to-end position). Males were quite active and produced by rubbing their body with the cages while searching for the females. However, the females responded passively during mating. Studios were further carried to see the response of virgin pairs under controlled conditions. It was observed that 69% of pairs succeeded in mating within one hour after the lights were switched on. Females remained unreceptive for 7 days of first mating, however, males were very much positive subject to the availability of virgin females. Although the remating frequency of female was positively correlated with fertility, but a male showed lower fertility as its frequency increased.

Mating disruption (MD) using synthetic sex pheromone lures has been used to control the Oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck), in apple orchards. In Korea, where several small apple orchards are clustered but independently managed, its efficacy has been suspected mainly due to immigration of any mated females from nearby untreated cultivating areas. This study developed an edge treatment technique to decrease any local MD-free zones in a specific MD-treated farm and to trap any immigrating mated females by installing MD lures and food traps around the apple farm with 10 meter intervals. The addition of the edge treatment to the MD significantly prevented leaf and fruit damages induced by G. molesta compared to MD only. Moreover, this study tried to optimize the MD control technique by determining frequency of MD application. It suggests two MD applications with the edge treatment at the end of March and at the early of July to be effective throughout the entire apple growing seasons.

This study was performed to estimate the efficacy of three commercial mating disruptors for the control of oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck), using a food-baited trap to collect field females. Mated female ratios estimated in the mating disruptor-treated areas were compared with the estimates of male trap captures, and both estimates were evaluated on the basis of crop damage measured by shoot tip damage caused by G. molesta. Both males and females were attracted to the food trap-baited with terpinyl acetate in apple orchard. Spermatophore of G. molesta was similar to female bursa copulatrix in size. Though there was more than 95% reduction in male trap captures indicating significant mating disruption, significant crop damage occurred on apple leaf buds, in which more than 35% of captured females were mated. This study demonstrates that assessment of the mated females would be more reasonable to represent the efficacy of mating disruptor(s) than the assessment of the male captures in G. molesta.
The efficacy of mating disruptors MD-IKR (Isomate-KR) and MD-CR (Confuser-R) for controlling Grapholita molesta (Busck) and Carposina sasakii (Matsumura) was evaluated in non-chemical or organic apple orchards. For G. molesta, the efficacy of MD-IKR and MD-CR in Chilgok was 99.8 and 99.8% (2011) and 92.4 and 96.7% (2012), respectively, showing different mating reduction values. The efficacy of MD-IKR and MD-CR in Cheongsong was 99.1 and 92.8% (2011) and 99.6 and 99.6% (2012), respectively. For C. sasakii, the efficacy of MD-IKR and MD-CR was 100% at Chilgok and Cheongsong in 2011 and 2012. Evaluation of the shooting and fruit damage rates showed that the efficacy of the mating disruptors in controlling G. molesta and C. sasakii was better than that of the non-control. However, there was no significant control difference between using the mating disruptors and the conventional control. No difference in the efficacy of the two mating disruptors was observed. We believe that MD-IKR could be an alternative to MD-CR.
To increase the mating rate of Bombus ignitus used as insect pollinator, we investigated the sexual maturity time of B. ignitus. In investigating ovary development such as the number of eggs per ovariole and spermatheca size, the time of sexual maturity of queen was 10 days after eclosion. In case of male, the number of sperm was 246 thousand at immediately after eclosion, and was highest as 480 thousand at 9 days, and tended to show a dramatic decline at 35 days (87 thousand). The more mating time, the less the number of sperm. In consideration of number of sperms, the time of sexual maturity of male was 3-15 days after eclosion. In the sexual maturity time of queen in mating, the queen was not mated at immediately after eclosion, and showed a decrease in 20 days. In terms of the rate of mating and oviposition, the favorable time for mating of queen was 9-20 days. On the other hand, the male showed 3.3% of mating at immediately after ecolosion, showed the highest of 43.3% at 6 days after eclosion, and tended to decrease in 25 days. The sexual maturity time for mating of male was 6-20 days. In summary, our results indicate that sexual maturity time of B. ignitus in reproductive organs and mating is most favorable in 9-12 days after eclosion for queen and 6-9 days for male.
A wax-typed pheromone dispenser has been developed and applied to control outbreak of the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, in apple orchard. To optimize its application technique, this study analyzed effect of different amounts of the pheromone dispenser on mating disruption('MD') of G. molesta. Different pheromone dispenser amounts significantly influenced the MD effect assessed by cumulative male adult catches monitored respectively by sticky delta trap and food trap, and resulted in differential damage on host plants. In a field test during entire growing season, a standard amount(120 g per 0.117 ha) of wax-typed pheromone dispenser was proved to be effective to suppress outbreak of G. molesta adults and to prevent host plant damage as much as a current commercial MD product($Isomate^{(R)}$). This study also demonstrated an effectiveness of deployment of food trap barriers around MD-treated area to prevent immigration of mated females from outside untreated areas. These results indicate that the wax-typed pheromone dispenser can be applied to control field G. molesta populations and its co-application with fuod trap barriers would be optimal to maximize MD efficacy.

This study was conducted to investigate the EAG (electroantennogram) response of Spodoptera frugiperda male to sex pheromone compounds and whether or not S. frugiperda male adults would undergo double mating. The EAG response of S. frugiperda male adult to Z9-14:Ac increased in a dose-dependent as the dose increased. Among the 7 sex pheromone components investigated, male EAG recording was the highest to Z9-14:Ac. The EAG response of S. frugiperda male adult to the mixed sex pheromone component was greater than that to the single component. Male adults of S. frugiperda were capable of double mating under laboratory condition, and the secondary mating rate increased to 72.2% compared to the 58.3% of primary mating rate. The EAG response of mated S. frugiperda male adult was not different from that of unmated S. frugiperda male. In the net house test with sex pheromone lure, mated male adults were not captured during the test period. Also, strangely, unmated male adults were not captured even in a trap equipped with virgin female adults, although the antennae of mated male adult were responded to the sex pheromone component in the laboratory. Probably, it is thought that the mated male adults may not have been caught in the trap be due to flight ability which has been decreased after mating. The field attractiveness of S. frugiperda male adults to sex pheromones remains to be further elucidated.

The adzuki pod worm, Matsumuraeses phaseoli (Matsumura) is an insect pest that attacks the flowers and pods of Vigna angularis. The circadian rhythms of eclosion and mating, and the effects of age and antenna ablation on mating success, were investigated. With a photoperiodic regime of 16:8 (Light:Dark) h, most adult eclosion was observed within 4 h after lights-on. Most adult mating was observed during the scotophase, although some occurred within 2 h after lights-on. However, the adults did not copulate on the day of emergence. The mating rate increased with adult age: being higher in the 4-d-old adult pairs than pairs of lower age. Most of the antennectomized males or females did not copulate with normal individuals of the opposite sex.
