Instructional Effect of Infographics Construction in Elementary Science (초등 과학 수업에서 학생주도 인포그래픽 구성 활동의 효과)

  • Students are exposed to many visual representations in various visual cultures. Infographics combining visual representations and writing can effectively convey information. Also it can be efficient ways for teachers to focus on important contents. Students can use infographics as a method directly to organize information. Therefore, the infographics that students use both writings and images directly and visually will be more effective on elementary school science classes than the workbook. Classes are guided with the same scientific inquiry and experiment written on the science textbook. The experimental group students organized scientific inquiry by infographics, while the comparison group students still used the workbook. First, the types of infographics are determined by what students want to explain. Based on learning objectives, students used the right type of infographics to effectively convey their focus on information. Second, the infographics organizing activities used in the classes had a significant effect on students' academic achievement. Also, the infographics organizing classes are positively associated to science-related attitudes, including such+ as 'Leisure Interest in Science', 'Adoption of Scientific Attitudes', and 'Attitude to Scientific Inquiry'. Third, visual tendency and classroom treatments had no interactions, but the experimental group had a positive impact regardless of student's characteristics. Fourth, experimental group showed positive attitudes toward to students' perception of infographics. Since some of students had difficulties organizing information in infographics, further research is required to enable students to reduce their burden in application of infographics.

The Effects of Concept Sketches on the Understanding and Attitude in High School Student's learning of Weather Change (날씨 변화 학습에서 개념스케치 활용이 고등학생의 개념 이해도와 과학 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of concept sketches on the understanding and scientific attitude in high school student's learning of weather change. Among the various fields of meteorology, especially in weather change, we often deal with the change of the spatiotemporal change in an abstract way. So making use of 'Concept Sketches'- simplified sketches which represent the main features, principles, processes and interrelationships of the learning contents using some concise explanations, signs and terms - could help the students learn the phenomena of weather change efficiently. This study's aim was to check up the effect and analyze the results of the lesson including the concept sketches. As a result of this study, concept sketches group showed significant improvement compared to the other groups in understanding of weather change and in scientific attitude, too. In students' recognition research of concept sketches showed that students found the class more interesting with improved concentration and had a chance to review through concept sketching, which is helpful for their learning. Considering the above research results, the study which applies concept sketching required the students to actively process their knowledge, and had a positive effect on the understanding of weather changes. Most of all, drawing the pictures which is a familiar activity helped the students to take part in the class eagerly.

Analysis of Science and E-book Application for Universal Design for Learning for Students with Disabilities (장애학생을 위한 초등학교 과학과 e-book의 보편적 학습설계 적용 분석)

  • This study examined whether the integrated education science and resource e-book developed for students with disabilities were properly implemented in terms of universal design for learning. For analysis, "Teaching and learning materials for inclusive education of students with disabilities: grade 3~6 sciences", which were instructional adaptation, were selected for students with disabilities who are unable to learn the contents of general textbooks for the 3rd to 6th grade of the elementary school science course in the 2015 revised curriculum. The science grades are composed of 40 units, including basic science inquiry, matter, life, kinetic and energy, earth and universe. The content analysis standard was based on detailed items of 9 definitions according to the 3 principles of UDL presented in CAST (2018). As a result of the study, the strategy network was the largest among the UDL principles. As for the domain of the science curriculum, the kinetic and energy was the most common. As UDL detailed items, informations presentation suitable for learners was most frequent in cognitive network. Various ways of searching for data, was most frequent in strategies network. Diverse materials optimized difficulty of contents was most frequent in affective network.

Pre-Service Teachers' Understandings on Earth Science Concept needed for an Integrated Approach: Exploring Mental Models about Eclipse Phenomena by Analyzing Phenomenological Primitives and Facets (통합적 접근이 필요한 지구과학 개념에 대한 예비 교사의 이해: 현상론적 초안과 국면 분석을 통한 식 현상에 대한 정신모형 탐색)

  • This study explored pre-service teachers' mental models about eclipse phenomena to investigate their understandings on the earth science concept needed f3r an integrated approach. We conducted in-depth interviews with two different contexts on 30 secondary and 36 primary pre-service teachers participants, and analyzed phenomenological primitives (p-prims) and facets of causal explanations about eclipses. Based on this study, we identified four different levels of mental models about eclipses. Four mental models were categorized as (1) Screening model, (2) Orbital plane model, (3) Hybrid model, and (4) Shadow cast model. Screening model is a flawed mental model, orbital plane model is an incomplete correct mental model, and shadow cast model is a scientifically correct mental model. Hybrid model, composite of two or more mental models, use multiple mental models simultaneously. Orbital plane model was the most widespread mental model in secondary pre-service teachers group, whereas screening model was used frequently in primary group. It was found that the level of mental model could be determined by the level of facet and p-prims. We confirmed context sensitivity of the mental models and perceived the necessity of integrated approaches to promote progression of mental models. Implications of our findings for enhancing pre-service science teachers' topic-specific pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) associated with eclipse phenomena are also discussed here.

Exploring Middle School Students' Types of Misconceptions on Astronomy Terminologies (중학교 천문학 용어에 대한 학생의 오개념 유형 탐색)

  • In this study, the definition, the level of difficulty, and the certainty of the understanding of 113 astronomy terminologies from 2009 revised middle school geoscience textbooks were examined. And through further interviews, the types of students' misconceptions about astronomy terminologies and their representative terms - examples of misconceptions were analyzed. The definitions of the terms presented by the students were largely classified as correct, low-level, and incorrect understanding. And low-level understanding was subdivided into high-level definition descriptions, undifferentiated concepts, and incorrect answers were subdivided into interference by scientific misconception and lack of prior knowledge. Given that the misconceptions due to terminologies can be distinguished from the prior misconception, the misconceptions due to terminologies can be effectively prevented by changing the term itself. In addition, students were aware of the advantages and disadvantages of metaphorical terms, and the recognition of their level of understanding is expected to be a good starting point considering that recognizing their own misconceptions is the first step in correcting them. Terminologies in science education is always an important subject of discussions, striving to select the right term according to the times, and scientific terms may change. It is expected that the results of this study will be the basis for discussions on the modification of terms.

The Mediating Effect of Grit in the Relationship between pPCK and ePCK Perceived by Teachers in Elementary School Science Classes (초등학교 과학 수업에서 교사가 인식하는 pPCK와 ePCK 사이의 관계에서 그릿의 매개효과)

  • In this study, we explored the mediating effect of grit in the relationship between elementary school science teachers' perceived personal pedagogical content knowledge (pPCK) and enacted pedagogical content knowledge (ePCK). Drawing on insights from a review of the literature, we developed a research hypothesis model that set pPCK, ePCK, and grit as latent variables. Pearson correlation was conducted to examine the interrelationships among the latent variables. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was then employed to analyze the model fit. Additionally, bootstrap analysis was performed to specifically investigate the mediating effect of grit in the relationship between pPCK and ePCK. The Pearson correlation analysis indicated statistically significant correlations among the measurement variables. Meanwhile, the SEM analysis revealed that the measurement model aligned with the research hypothesis model. Furthermore, the bootstrap analysis demonstrated that grit had a statistically significant mediating effect in the relationship between elementary school science teachers' perceived pPCK and ePCK. These findings quantitatively examine the importance and impact of grit in the teacher expertise domain, providing valuable insights for the development of teachers' expertise and teacher education research within elementary school science classes.

UK use huge a national budget at digital education development and Sweden which is advanced country of education and a welfare state. Especially UK and Sweden's digital education markets are full now aspect more high quality design. Korea which is advanced country of IT adopted digital text book 2007 with mathematics, through science and English digital text book through the state. Korea's digital text book is in a transition period. that needs case study of advanced country of education for setting design guide and educational effect to digital education media and device plan. All researches are based on LG europe design center at London. Analysis by using KJ method, survey of questionnaire, heuristic method at 4 schools in UK and Sweden. Through analytical researches want to more reality simulation at digital education, and high quality contents with digital socialization. co-work with analog, can get any where, anytime user want without any difficulty. Also interactive GUI design of digital education device to easy to access for user. When plan Digital text book content and design needs methodical design guide for target who students and environment an in-depth study of the appraisal and method. The results of the research are introduce the design plan as a basic research and giving useful design plan to make digital educational media in Korea industrial aspect.

Inquiry based Online Contents Development for Elementary Science Class (초등학교 과학교과의 온라인 탐구형 콘텐츠 개발)

  • This study is to design, develope, and deploy of e-learning inquiry based content in elementary science class. First, this study analyzed related literature review, case studies, and inquiry based class models for seeking better applicable design and development modes. From focus group meeting, experts discussed the inquiry content design ideas for elementary students for science class. This study finally established its own inquiry design mode for online science class with the flow of understanding of problem, sep up hypothesis, problem solving, and solution analysis. The developed content was deployed in real classroom setting to see how students received the contents and how well they processed the learning activities. We found that inquiry based online content, especially when applied to science subject, can be effective in students interests and their motivations. We also observed that there were a few managerial errors such as detailed lesson guidance and tutor support for students activities. This study concluded that inquiry based online contents should be designed considering students interests based on learning subjects and also developed in terms of students interests and strong motivation as well. We suggest that related research should be expanded toward to other subject than science and various students age groups.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of ICT on tenth grade students' understandings of and attitude toward reproduction. The subject of the study was 8 classes of 267 students. Four classes learned with help of lCT, but another four classes learned on the basis of a textbook. Understanding of reproduction and the attitude were assessed using a written test and a survey, respectively. The lCT was found to be effective to foster understanding of reproduction concepts and consciousness toward human reproduction. Discussions in the web enabled students get some feedbacks on their preconceptions from other students.

  • Preconceptions of middle school students related to chemical change the students are surveyed. The students are divided into experimental group that are learned by concept change theory teaching model, and control group that are learned by traditional teaching method based on science textbooks. After the planned classes, the tendencies of concept change of the two groups according to students learning motivations are analyzed. New teaching methods, which based on concept change learning model and students learning motivations, developed by this research. And the effects of the new teaching method are testified. As a result, it is proved that most of the students have a lot of preconceptions, and persist the wrong conceptions after the classes. This tendency is same in the control group and in the experimental group.
