Friction coefficients of the prestressing tendon are the basic information required to control the prestressing force introduced to PSC structure during jacking. However, the friction coefficients show considerable differences depending on the specifications, causing much confusion to designers. In this study, the ranges of the friction coefficients presented in domestic and foreign specifications are compared together to clarify the differences. Then, a procedure is proposed that can be used to estimate the wobble and curvature friction coefficients from field data such as elongation and prestressing force and from theory related to the friction. The procedure is applied to various tendon profiles of several PSC bridges constructed by ILM, FCM and MSS. The resulting values are compared with those presented in some specifications and assumed in jacking and a reasonable range of the friction coefficient is discussed. Lift-off tests are also performed in some bridges to further verify the results. The resulting wobble friction coefficients are not as small as those presented in AASHTO specifications but range from the lower limit to mid point of domestic specifications, while the curvature friction coefficients approach or slightly exceed the upper limit.
The paper describes a theoretical model for the prediction of bridge temperatures from meteorological data measured at bridge site and local meteorological center together with existing finite element heat transfer theory and solar radiation transfer theory to determine the time dependent temperature distribution of bridge. In this analytical model, the most adequate equation for the calculation of solar radiation on the bridge surface, which is dominant in day time is described based on the results of several experimental studies for the solar energy. The validity of this model is tested against field data obtained from long term experimental program on Sadang Viaduct in Seoul. Also, this paper describes the linear correlation between design variables and meteorological data to establish analytical criteria for the prediction of the average temperature, which are responsible for the longitudinal deformation of the bridges and of the vertical differential temperature profiles. which are responsible for the bending deformations from the long term experimental results.

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) usually exhibits inherent brittleness under tensile stress. Application of FRP tendons to concrete beam leads to undesirable flexural behavior due to limited ductility compared to prestressed concrete beam with steel tendons. It has been experimentally observed that partial improvement of flexural behavior can be achieved by releasing FRP tendons' strain by unbonding FRP tendons. In order to estimate and apply the degree of improvement to the design, reasonable yet practical model predicting flexural strength as well as overall flexural behavior of unbonded FRP prestressed concrete beam is needed. In this study, an elaborated model in describing curvature distributions and flexural strength at ultimate stage of unbonded FRP tendons is described. There have been close agreements on the flexural strength of the FRP prestressed concrete beam between the predictions by nonlinear computer program and by the model.

An experimental study for a crane hook was performed to investigate the stress distribution along a certain line where the maximum and minimum stresses to be developed. On this line, the isoclinic fringe and/or principal stress direction is constant. The crane hook was modeled into a 2-dimensional plate made of urethane rubber called 'Photoflex' The Photoflex is very sensitive to a load and has low photoelastic fringe constant. The Tardy compensation method with the fringe sharpening process and the 4-step phase shifting method, was used for the photoelastic technique. Experimental results by photoelasticity were compared with the calculated stresses from the simple curved beam theory and tile finite element analysis. Ail the results were close to each other.

The state-of-art of curved box girder bridge with cross section design has advanced in various area. In these days, several analytical techniques for behaviors of curved box girder bridges cross section are available to engineers. The transfer matrix method is extensively used for the structural analysis because its merit in the theoretical background and applicability. The technique is attractive for implementation on a numerical solution by means of a computer program coded in Fortran language with a few elements. To demonstrate this fact, it gives good results which compare well with finite element method. Therefore, this paper proposed the static analysis method of curved box bridge with cross section by transfer matrix method based on pure-torsional theory and the optimal span ratio/variable cross section ratio of 3 span continuous curved box girder bridge.

This paper presents a preliminary study to monitor the lateral behavior of pile foundation using multiplexed fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensors. In the Preliminary study, an 1.7 meter long cantilever beam with the shape of square hollow box was fabricated and tested under the static loading. Four FBG sensors were multiplexed in a single optical fiber and installed into the top and bottom of the cantilever beam. The strains are directly measured from FBG sensors followed by curvature calculations based on the plane section assumption. Vertical deflections are then estimated using the regression analyses based on the geometric relationships. It has been found that excellent correlation with conventional sensing system was observed. The success of the test encourages the use of the FBG sensing system as a monitoring system for pile foundations. However, further consideration should be given in the case of the sensor malfunction for the practical purpose.
Compared to Butane tank, the propane tank should have a higher compressive strength due to its higher vapor pressure. In this study, a theoretical analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of change in the geometry of bottom plate on the mechanical property of tank, and an experiment was also carried out to observe the propensity of the deformation and failure of the vessel using hydraulic pressurizing device. The compressive strength of the vessel was observed to improve 1.5-2.5 MPa as the curvature of the bottom plate was decreased 62 mm and the thickness of the bottom plate was increased 0.25 mm. This study are expected to provide viable information conducive to achieve on-going development of a small vessel for the pressurized propane gas.
In the horizontally curved bridges, girders are subjected to the combined action of vertical bending and torsion due to their curvatures without any eccentric loads. As subjected to bending and torsion, the ultimate strength of steel/concrete composite box girders are limited by the diagonal tensile stress in the deck concrete induced by the St. Venant torsion. To determine the ultimate strength of composite box girders in bending and torsion and their interactions, this study conducted a 3-dimensional FEA and classical strength of materials investigation. Using ABAQUS, the FEA fully utilized advanced nonlinear analysis techniques simulating material/geometrical nonlinearity and post-cracking behaviors. The ultimate strength from numerical data were compared with theoretically derived values. Concurrent compressive stresses in the concrete deck improve the shear-resisting capacity of concrete, thereby resulting in an increased torsional resistance of the composite box girder in positive bending. The proposed interaction equation is very simple yet it provides a rational lower bound in determining the ultimate strength of concrete/steel composite box girders.

One of the major causes of stiffness and strength degradations in laminated composite structures is the delamination between composite layers. In most engineering applications, laminated composite structures have certain curvatures. If the curved composite structure is subjected to bending that tends to flatten the composite structures, through the thickness stresses can be generated in the thickness direction of the composites. Under normal operation open mode delamination could occur at the sites of peak interlaminar stress. This paper describes a technique to determine radial direction stress of a laminated composite structure using a curved beam. Stacking sequence effects of interlaminar stress were studied. The radial location and intensity of the open mode delamination stress were calculated and compared with the results obtained from the analytical solution and finite element method.
When an initially straight thin cylinder is bent, there is a tendency for the cross section to flatten. This phenomenon was investigated by L.G. Brazier in 1927 and is called "Brazier Effect" or "Brazier Theory". The main characteristic is the reduction of carrying capacity due to the decrease of bending stiffness by shortening of thickness with the increase of external load. And the relationship of curvature-bending moment becomes a soft spring type as shown in Fig.2. In this paper, the Brazier theory on plate type structures is investigated from the following view points : (1) What is the Brazier effect? (2) the reason of the occurrence of the Brazier effect in plate type structures by using beam model and (3) factors which cause the brazier effect.
