  • With the progress of micro actuator technology, studies on the development of micro air flapping wing vehicles are actively undergoing. In the present study, the changes of both lift and thrust characteristics of the wings are investigated using a boundary element method. Lift of the heaving wing is not generated when the wing is beating with smaller frequencies than 1 Hz. Thrust increases with amplitude and frequency. As the wing's taper and aspect ratios increase, both lift and thrust also increase. Results on the pitching oscillation and flapping motion will be included in the future work.

  • This paper shows that the support growth of an optimum (minimum mean square-error) scalar quantizer for a Laplacian density is logarithmic with the number of quantization points. Specifically, it is shown that, for a unit-variance Laplacian density, the ratio of the support-determining threshold of an optimum quantizer to $\frac 3{\sqrt{2}}1n\frac N 2$ converges to 1, as the number of quantization points grows. Also derived is a limiting upper bound that says that the optimum support cannot exceed the logarithmic growth by more than a constant. These results confirm the logarithmic growth of the optimum support that has previously been derived heuristically.

  • For the high quality 3-D broadcasting, depth maps are important data. Although commercially available depth cameras capture high-accuracy depth maps in real time, their resolutions are much smaller than those of the corresponding color images due to technical limitations. In this paper, we propose the depth map up-sampling method using a high-resolution color image and a low-resolution depth map. We define a random walk probability model in an operation unit which has nearest seed pixels. The proposed method is appropriate to match boundaries between the color image and the depth map. Experimental results show that our method enhances the depth map resolution successfully.

  • In this paper, we present a spatial domain error concealment method to recover a lost block in intra-coded frames. The edge directions of the lost block are estimated by the difference values of the border pixels of the accurately received blocks. The lost block is interpolated according to the estimated edge directions. Our algorithm can adaptively recover a lost block according to the estimated edge direction. The distances between pixels are used as weights for interpolation. In spite of the low computational cost, the proposed method outperforms the previous methods in objective and subjective qualities.

  • In this paper, the TM (Transverse Magnetic) scattering problems by a perfectly conducting strip grating over a grounded two dielectric layers with edge boundary condition are analyzed by applying the FGMM (Fourier Galerkin Moment Method). For the TM scattering problem, the induced surface current density is expected to the very high value at both edges of the strip, then the induced surface current density on the conductive strip is expanded in a series of the multiplication of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind and the functions of appropriate edge boundary condition. Generally, when the value of the relative permittivity of dielectric layers over the ground plane increased, the strip width according to the sharp variation points of the reflected power is shifted to a higher value. The numerical results shown the fast convergent solution and good agreement compared to those of the existing papers.

  • In case of wavelet coefficients have correlation, in image signal denoising using wavelet shrinkage denoising method, the denoising effect for the image signal is reduced when the wavelet shrinkage denoising method is used. The coefficients of multiwavelet transform have correlation by pre-filters. To solve the degradation problem in multiwavelet transform, V Sterela suggested a new pre-filter for the Universal threshold or weighting factors to the threshold. In this paper, to improve the denoising effect in the multiwavelet transform, the coefficient normalizing method that the coefficient are divided by estimated noise deviation is adopted to the transformed multiwavelet coefficients in the course of wavelet shrinkage technique. And the thresholds of universal, SURE and GCV are estimated using normalized coefficients and tried to denoise by the wavelet shrinkage technique. We compared PSNRs of denoised images for each thresholds and confirmed the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • In this study, the 1D apparent shear stress model for vegetated compound open-channel flows was suggested. To consider the effect of momentum exchange between main channel and floodplain, the eddy viscosity concept was used in the present model. The interfacial eddy viscosity in the interface of main channel and floodplain was determined from the 3D Reynolds stress model. The evaluated interfacial eddy viscosity appears to be good agreement with those proposed previously. To investigate the effect of interfacial eddy viscosity, sensitive analysis was carried out. the computed backwater profiles are nearly identical with respect to the value of the interfacial eddy viscosity. However, the discharge conveyed by the floodplain changes is proportional to the interfacial eddy viscosity. Finally, the changes of the interfacial eddy viscosity due to the vegetation density and vegetation height were examined. The computed results of interfacial eddy viscosity are in proportion to the vegetation density and vegetation height, and the interfacial eddy viscosity has a range of $(2-5)\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$.

  • In this paper, we propose a boundary based marker binary coding method for augmented reality games, which enables the marker-area to be binary coded well in any lighting environments. First, it detects the boundary after transforming an original marker image to a gray scale image, and it executes 4 way pixel extensions for all boundary pixels in order to make the boundary to closed area. Next, for all boundary pixels it compares the brightness of right and left ones of each pixel and allocates black for the lower side and white for the higher side by filling inside area thru the seeded region growing. Experimental results showed that our proposed method produces a good binary marker image recognizable in various light environments. In addition, it showed the possibility of real-time calculation by considering the result of operation speed which is 51 fps for VGA image.

  • The boundary layer developing over the suction surface of a first-stage turbine blade for power generation has been investigated in this study. For three locations selected in the region where local thermal load changes dramatically, mean velocity, turbulence intensity, and one-dimensional energy spectrum are measured with a hot-wire anemometer. The results show that the suction-surface boundary layer suffers a transition from a laminar flow to a turbulent one. This transition is confirmed to be a "separated-flow transition", which usually occurs in the shear layer over a separation bubble. The local minimum thermal load on the suction surface is found at the initiation point of the transition, whereas the local maximum thermal load is observed at the location of very high near-wall turbulence intensity after the transition process. Frequency characteristics of turbulent kinetic energy before and after the transition are understood clearly from the energy spectrum data.
