  • The objectives of this study were to analyze the longitudinal gradient and temporal variations of water quality in Daecheong Reservoir in relation to the major inflowing streams from the watershed, during 2001~2010. For the study, we selected 7 main-stream sites of the reservoir along the main axis of the reservoir, from the headwater to the dam and 8 tributary streams. In-reservoir nutrients of TN and TP showed longitudinal declines from the headwater to the dam, which results in a distinct zonation of the riverine ($R_z$, M1~M3), transition ($T_z$, M4~M6), and lacustrine zone ($L_z$, M7) in water quality, as shown in other foreign reservoirs. Chlorophyll-a (CHL) and BOD as an indicator of organic matter, were maximum in the $T_z$. Concentration of total phosphorus (TP) was the highest (8.52 $mg\;L^{-1}$) on March in the $R_z$, and was the highest (165 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) in the $L_z$ on July. Values of TN was the maximum (377 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) on August in the $R_z$, and was the highest (3.76 $mg\;L^{-1}$) in the $L_z$ on August. Ionic dilution was evident during September~October, after the monsoon rain. The mean ratios of TN : TP, as an indicator of limiting factor, were 88, which indicates that nitrogen is a surplus for phytoplankton growth in this system. Nutrient analysis of inflowing streams showed that major nutrient sources were headwater streams of T1~T2 and Ockcheon-Stream of T5, and the most influential inflowing stream to the reservoir was T5, which is located in the mid-reservoir, and is directly influenced by the waste-water treatment plants. The key parameters, influenced by the monsoon rain, were TP and suspended solids (SS). Empirical models of trophic variables indicated that variations of CHL in the $R_z$ ($R^2$=0.044, p=0.264) and $T_z$ ($R^2$=0.126, p=0.054) were not accounted by TN, but were significant (p=0.032) in the $L_z$. The variation of the log-transformed $I_r$-CHL was not accounted ($R^2$=0.258, p=0.110) by $I_w$-TN of inflowing streams, but was determined ($R^2$=0.567, p=0.005) by $I_w$-TP of inflowing streams. In other words, TP inputs from the inflowing streams were the major determinants on the in-reservoir phytoplankton growth. Regression analysis of TN : TP suggested that the ratio was determined by P, rather than N. Overall, our data suggest that TP and suspended solids, during the summer flood period, should be reduced from the eutrophication control and P-input from Ockcheon-Stream should be controlled for water quality improvement.

  • Tandem HPLC and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization(APcI) LC/MS method was used for the determination and confirmation of carbendazim residues in soybean sprout. Fluorescence(FL) detector was connected in tandem with the ultraviolet(UV) detector for dual detection of the carbendazim residue at the excitation and emission wavelength of 280 nm and 310 nm, respectively. The limit of detection for carbendazim was $0.1{\mu}g/kg$ sample. Recoveries of carbendazim from fortified soybean sprout at 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 ppm were averaged 89.1%. Mass spectrometry using a APcI source confirmed the carbendazim residue in the soybean sprout sample. Fragmentation pattern on the APcI LC/MS spectrum of carbendazim was simpler than that from electron impact(EI) mass spectrum. Carbendazim produced 3 major ions including m/z 133, m/z 159 and m/z 191($M^{+}$). This method was sensitive enough to provide reliable and reproducible results for practical applications.

  • The faint quasars with M1450 > -24 mag are known to hold the key to the determination of the ultraviolet emissivity for the cosmic reionization. But only a few have been identified so far because of the limitations on the survey data. Here we present the first results of the z ~ 5 faint quasar survey with the Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS), which covers ${\sim}100deg^2$ areas in J band to the depths of $J_{AB}$ ~ 23 mag. To improve selection methods, the medium-band follow-up imaging has been carried out using the SED camera for QUasars in Early uNiverse (SQUEAN) on the Otto Struve 2.1 m Telescope. The optical spectra of the candidates were obtained with 8 m class telescopes. We newly discovered 10 quasars with -25 < $M_{1450}$ < -23 at z ~ 5, among which three have been missed in a previous survey using the same optical data over the same area, implying the necessity for improvements in high-redshift faint quasar selection. We derived photometric redshifts from the medium-band data and found that they have high accuracies of ${\langle}{\mid}{\Delta}z{\mid}/(1+z){\rangle}=0.016$. The medium-band-based approach allows us to rule out many of the interlopers that contaminate ${\geq}20%$ of the broadband-selected quasar candidates. These results suggest that the medium-band-based approach is a powerful way to identify z ~ 5 quasars and measure their redshifts at high accuracy (1%-2%). It is also a cost-effective way to understand the contribution of quasars to the cosmic reionization history.

  • In [3] and [2], Atanassov introduced the two arithmetic functions $$I(n)=\prod_{p^{\alpha}{\parallel}n}\;p^{1/{\alpha}}\;and\;R(n)=\prod_{p^{\alpha}{\parallel}n}\;p^{{\alpha}-1}$$ called the irrational factor and the restrictive factor, respectively. Alkan, Ledoan, Panaitopol, and the authors explore properties of these arithmetic functions in [1], [7], [8] and [9]. In the present paper, we generalize these functions to a larger class of elements of $PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})$, and explore some of the properties of these maps.

  • We report results of a comparative study of the normal-state and superconducting properties in the GdBa$_2$(Cu$_{2.9}$Al$_{0.1}$)O$_z$ system with substitutions by Pr for the Gd and Ba sites. It is observed that, fur both Pr-doped systems, the superconducting transition temperature(T$_c$) decreases almost linearly with the Pr-content, but Pr at Ba sites results in a faster T$_c$ drop than that of Pr at Gd sites. The thermoelectric power measurements indicate that there is a strong correlation between the T$_c$ and the room temperature value of thermoelectric power. The experimental results are discussed in connection with existing models.

  • Let $\{{\beta}(n)\}^{\infty}_{n=0}$ be a sequence of positive numbers such that ${\beta}(0)=1$. We consider the space $H^2({\beta})$ of all power series $f(z)=^{Po}_{n=0}{\hat{f}}(n)z^n$ such that $^{Po}_{n=0}{\mid}{\hat{f}}(n){\mid}^2{\beta}(n)^2<{\infty}$. We link the ideas of subspaces of $H^2({\beta})$ and zero sets. We give some sufficient conditions for a vector in $H^2({\beta})$ to be cyclic for the multiplication operator $M_z$. Also we characterize the commutant of some multiplication operators acting on $H^2({\beta})$.

  • Effects of substituents in the nucleophile(X), the substrate(Y) and the leaving group(Z) on the structure of $S_N2$ transition states have been analyzed by considering effects of four components, electrostatic($E_{es}$), exchange repulsion ($E_{ex}$), polarization($E)_{pl}$) and charge transfer($E_{ct}$) terms, of interaction between the reactants on the degree of bond making and bond breaking. Prediction of net effects of all substituents(X, Y and Z) on the degree of bond making were found to be clearcut whereas the effect of an electron withdrawing group on the substrate (Y = EWG) on the degree of bond breaking was complex; the substituent(Y = EWG) is normally carbon-leaving group($C^{\ast}$-L) bond tightening($E_{pl}$ dominance) but becomes $C^{\ast}$-L bond loosening when the bond is strongly antibonding ($E_{ct}$ dominance). Our model calculations on the reaction of $CH_2XNH_2$ with $YCH_2COOCH_2Z$ using energy decomposition scheme have confirmed that predictions based on our analysis are correct.

  • The aim of this paper is to obtain the general solution of the 2-variable radical functional equations $f({\sqrt[k]{x^k+z^k}},\;{\sqrt[{\ell}]{y^{\ell}+w^{\ell}}})=f(x,y)+f(z,w)$, x, y, z, w ∈ ℝ, for f a mapping from the set of all real numbers ℝ into a vector space, where k and ℓ are fixed positive integers. Also using the fixed point result of Brzdęk and Ciepliński [11, Theorem 1] in (2, 𝛽)-Banach spaces, we prove the generalized hyperstability results of the 2-variable radical functional equations. In the end of this paper we derive some consequences from our main results.
