Palladium (Pd) is widely used as a catalyst and noxious gas sensing materials. Especially, various researches of Pd based hydrogen gas sensor have been studied due to the noble property, Pd can be adsorbed hydrogen up to 900 times its own volume. In this study, palladium oxide (PdO) nanostructures were grown on Si substrate ($SiO_2(300nm)/Si$) for 3 to 5 hours at $230^{\circ}C{\sim}440^{\circ}C$ using thermal chemical vapor deposition system. Pd powder (source material) was vaporized at $950^{\circ}C$ and high purity Ar gas (carrier gas) was flown with the 200 sccm. The surface morphology of as-grown PdO nanostructures were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM). The crystallographic properties were confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. As the results, the as-grown nanostructures exhibit PdO phase. The nano-cube structures of PdO were synthesized at specific substrate temperatures and specific growth duration. Especially, PdO nano-cube structrures were uniformly grown at $370^{\circ}C$ for growth duration of 5 hours. The PdO nano-cube structures are attributed to vapor-liquid-solid process. The nano-cube structures of PdO on graphene nanosheet can be applied to fabricate of high sensitivity hydrogen gas sensor.

A novel design of gas sensor using Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films which are deposited on low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrates is presented. The LTCC substrates with thickness of 400 ${\mu}m$ are fabricated by laminating 12 green tapes which consist of alumina and glass particle in an organic binder. The GZO thin films with different thickness are deposited on LTCC substrates, by RF magnetron sputtering method. The microstructure and sensing properties of GZO gas sensing films are analyzed as a function of the film thickness. The films are well crystallized in the hexagonal (wurzite) structure with increasing thickness. The maximum sensitivity of 3.49 is obtained at 100 nm film thickness and the fastest 90% response time of 27.2 sec is obtained at 50 nm film thickness for the operating temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ to the $NO_2$ gas.
${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ thick film city gas sensors have been fabricated by using screen printing method. The sensitivity to $C_4H_{10}$ and, $CH_4$ was about 90% and 65% respectively. The devices heated in air at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour exhibited the highest sensitivity (-90%) to $C_4H_{10}$ at the operating temperature of $300-350^{\circ}C$. And they had good selectivity for $C_4H_{10}$ in comparistion with other gases (CO, $H_2$, $C_3H_8$ etc).

Using a vanadium dioxide ($VO_2$) source, highly pure and amorphous vanadium oxide (VO) thin films were deposited using an e-beam evaporator at room temperature and high vacuum (<$10^{-7}$ Torr). Then, by controlling the post-annealing conditions such as $N_2:O_2$ pressure ratio and annealing time, we could easily synthesize a homogeneous $VO_2$ thin film and also mixed-phase VO thin films, including $VO_2$, $V_2O_5$, $V_3O_7$, $V_5O_9$, and $V_6O_{13}$. The crystallinity and phase of these were characterized by X-ray diffraction, and the surface morphology by FE-SEM. Moreover, the electrical properties and ethanol sensing measurements of the VO thin films were analyzed as a function of temperature. In general, mixed-phases as a self-doping effect have enhanced electrical properties, with a high carrier density and an enhanced response to ethanol. In summary, we developed an easy, scalable, and reproducible fabrication process for VO thin films that is a promising candidate for many potential electrical and optical applications.

Synthesizing low-dimensional structures of oxide semiconductors is a promising approach to fabricate highly efficient gas sensors by means of possible enhancement in surface-to-volume ratios of their sensing materials. In this work, vertically aligned zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods are successfully synthesized on a transparent glass substrate via seed-mediated hydrothermal synthesis method with the use of a ZnO nanoparticle seed layer, which is formed by thermally oxidizing a sputtered Zn metal film. Structural and optical characterization by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy reveals the successful preparation of the ZnO nanorods array of the single hexagonal wurtzite crystalline phase. From gas sensing measurements for the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas, the vertically aligned ZnO nanorod array is observed to have a highly responsive sensitivity to NO2 gas at relatively low concentrations and operating temperatures, especially showing a high maximum sensitivity to NO2 at 250 ℃ and a low NO2 detection limit of 5 ppm in dry air. These results along with a facile fabrication process demonstrate that the ZnO nanorods synthesized on a transparent glass substrate are very promising for low-cost and high-performance NO2 gas sensors.
Diode laser sensor is conducted to measure the gas temperature in the liquid-gas 2-phase counter flow flame. C$\_$10/H/ sub 22/ and city gas were used as liquid fuel and gas fuel, respectively. Two vibrational overtones of H$_2$O were selected and measurements were carried out in the spray flame region stabilized the above gaseous premixed flame. The path-averaged temperature measurement using diode laser absorption method succeeded in the liquid fuel combustion environment regardless of droplets of wide range diameter. The path-averaged temperature measured in the post flame of liquid-gas 2-phase counter flow flame showed qualitative reliable results. The successful demonstration of time series temperature measurement in the liquid-gas 2-phase counter flow flame gave us motivation of trying to establish the effective control system in practical combustion system. These results demonstrated the ability of real-time feedback from combustor inside using the non-intrusive measurement as well as the possibility of application to practical combustion system. Failure case due to influence of spray flame was also discussed.
A Micro platform for micro gas sensor consisted of micro heater, insulator, and sensing electrode on 2 ${\mu}m$ thick $SiN_x$ membrane. Three types of micro platforms were designed and fabricated with membrane sizes. Total size of micro platform was 2.6 mm by 2.6 mm. Measured power consumptions were 28 mW, 28 mW, and 32.5 mW for Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3. At this moment, temperatures of membranes on the platforms were $295^{\circ}C$, $297^{\circ}C$, and $296^{\circ}C$, respectively. Fabricated micro platform considered appropriate to apply for low power consumption micro gas sensor. Micro gas sensors were prepared by the sequence that $SnO_2$ nanopowder pastes were dropped on membrane of Type 1 platforms, dried in oven, heat-treated with micro heaters in platforms. One of the micro gas sensors was tested for gas response to 1157 ppm, 578 ppm, and 231 ppm of methane and 1.68 ppm, 0.84 ppm, and 0.42 ppm of $NO_2$.

Optical measurement methods make it possible to detect object displacements with high resolution and noncontact measurements. Also, they are very robust against EMI noises and have long operation range. An optical triangulation sensor is one of widely used displacement measurement sensors for its sub-micron resolution, fast response, simple structure, and low cost. However. there are several errors caused by inclinations of a surface. speckle effects, power fluctuations of light sources, and noises of detectors. In this paper, in order to minimize error effects, we performed error analysis and proposed a new structure. Then, we setup a new modeling method and verify it through simulations and experiments. Based on the new model. we propose a new sensor structure and establish design criteria. Finally, we design a signal processing system to overcome a resolution-limited problem of light detectors. The resolution of the proposed system is 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in 5mm operating range.

Conventional leak detectors are widely based on helium gas sensors. However, the usage of hydrogen sensors in leak detectors has increased because of the high prices of helium leak detectors and the dearth in the supply of helium gas. In this study, a hydrogen leak detector was developed using solid-state hydrogen sensors. The hydrogen sensors are based on Park-Rapp probes with heterojunctions made by oxygen-ion conducting Yttria-stabilized zirconia and proton-conducting In-doped $CaZrO_3$. The hydrogen sensors were used for determining the potential difference between air and air balanced 5 ppm of $H_2$. Even though the Park-Rapp probe shows an excellent selectivity for hydrogen, the sensitivity of the sensor was low because of the low concentration of hydrogen, and the oxygen on the surface of the sensor. In order to increase the sensitivity of the sensor, the sensors were connected in series by Pt wires to increase the potential difference. The sensors were tested at temperatures ranging from $500-600^{\circ}C$.
In order to measure alcohol contents with speed and accuracy, alcohol sensor was prepared. Alcohol sensor was made by connecting with oxygen electrode after immobilized alcohol oxidase on nylon net with glutaraldehyde. Alcohol was determined by changing the rate of dissolved oxygen consumption using D.O. analyzer. Alcohol contents in alcoholic beverages were determined under the optimum conditions. The results were 0.71% in low-alcohol beverage, $4{\sim}5%$ in beers, 10.06% in wine, 16.12% in chungju, 25.71% in soju, and 6.18% in takju, respectively. The values by alcohol sensor showed an excellent correlation(r=0.999) with GC method.
